7 Day Trek: What's it like Hiking Hut to Hut on the Alta Via 2 in the Italian Dolomites?

It's been awhile since we put up a video but this was a bucket list trip of a lifetime for us. We've been drooling over the Dolomites for ages and wanting to do a hut-to-hut trip for almost as long. Family travel with teens can be so much easier but We still ended up getting some help to make our trek along the first half of the Alta Via 2 happen. And it all worked out spectacularly. From jaw dropping scenery, to leg crushing climbs, to friendly, cozy, rifugi that welcomed us with high calorie food, cold beer, local house wine, and plenty of Cioccolada Densa for the boys, this hike through the Italian Dolomites kept our hearts full. Come find out what it was like and how we did it. Ciao! -H

Thank you for this. We did the AV1 this Sept with a service, got a baggage transfer from day 1 to mid in Cortina to the end in Belluno and that was worth it. I’ve been considering AV2 but I heard the via Ferratta required helmets and gear? But your trip and this video looks totally possible. Thanks for this… beautiful.

That is awesome! Which service did you use? While there is an option to do Via Ferratas on the AV2, we chose to avoid them. There was some cabling but we never used any harnesses or helmets, and while it was a bit worrisome of some of us at first, we soon got used to it and I would say most people weren't using gear on those sections. I think the people we saw with gear were actually coming back from doing real via Ferratas. September was a great time for us to do the AV2 as well though it will depend on the year. We now want to to the AV1! Hope you get to the AV2. it was wonderful. -Henry

@@Travelingmel I did AV1 through Alpine Exploratory and loved them. It took 12 days but we had two rest days in Cortina which was worth it. I’m seriously considering AV2 or smaller Swiss or Austrian hikes next. Cheers to adventures!

Hey Mel...amazing walk. We have just completed the Camino de Santiago (St Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre) as a family and we are now looking for our next adventure. How did you plan this trip? Any recommendations for books etc to plan before arriving?

Hi! The planning part was what stymied us the most too! I wrote this post that has everything we would have wanted to known before we went: travelingmel.com/alta-via-2-dolomites-hut-to-hut-hiking/ And we had a company book all the huts for us - that made a huge difference since we needed 6 huts in a row.

Hi Pete, We started our trek on Sept 10 and ended on the 16th. We had wonderful weather and relatively uncrowded trails. The only downside of going so late was that the bus we'd hope to take from San Pellegrino had stopped running a couple days earlier so we took a taxi back to Bolzano. More expensive but simpler. Hope that helps -H

I want to do this solo in march (23. Female capable hiker), do I need to book into huts or a tour or just rock up myself! 😁

In marzo c'è neve, non si cammina si scia. Almeno fino ad aprile-maggio. La stagione normalmente si apre a giugno, anche se in alto ci possono ancora essere pezzi innevati

  • @Travelingmel

Hi Tama, sorry. Just seeing your comment. The huts are not open in March. They won't open until April or May depending on snow and you'd need snow and alpine gear. I'd definitely book ahead and shoot for July or early September. In september, there were generally beds, but earlier in the year they fill up in advance. We used a service to do the booking and honestly, it didn't cost much more than doing it ourselves. See the blog post for details. The trail was very hikeable in september and I'm sure you'd have little problem with that part of it. Hope you get to do it! -Henry
