    Im not necessarily a VW fan but when the car runs correctly they are a pleasure to drive and I can see why so many buy them. I have never owned one but have driven many as I work on them and must say they have a stellar suspension design for smooth handling.

    Water pump should always be changed when the timing belt is changed. I have a 2000 MK4 2.0 and never had this problem. I did just have my I've box door handle break just recently, after about 20yrs of ownership. And the dipstick housing broke after 15yrs of ownership. Very reliable car. 170,000 miles with a supercharger on it for about 150,000. Knock on wood of course..

    I agree with all those issues. Another bad thing are the connectors and anything plastic and the wiring diagrams are garbage . I'm working on one where pretty much all modules were knocked out and two relays by a lightning strike. They are simple to work on and reliable and ebay is your friend for parts. I grew up around the old air cooled ones.

  • @boomerguy9935
    @boomerguy9935 Жыл бұрын

    It's ironic that so many coolant related problems occur in a car whose ancestor was air-cooled. Also, the water-cooled Porsche 911 models have far more problems than the previous air-cooled ones. I have the VW Mk 5 2.5 I5 engine which is still pretty much bulletproof at 164K miles. Great video. Concise and understandable. Thank you.

    I have a 2004 vw jetta as well and my engine locked on me. I had oil change and all fluids in my car. Also i noticed the wires and fuses above my battery were fried. When the engine locked it was not running hot and no fluids were leaking. The battery light popped on and the car shut down. My mechanic told me no mechanic can tell you why the engine locked unless they go inside the engine and he wants 1900$ to rebuild it. Can you give me any suggestions on what to do. I replaced upstream o2 sensors, a new radiator, tune up, and oil change. Ive also been having many electrical issues as well. Thanks

    Yup, you got all of them, just you forgot to add the coolant water bottle, the cap for that bottle and of course the hoses that either crack or swell. That regulator hose I replaced with regular 6mm fuel line, and used some copper wire to lock it in position, seems to last a lot better there than the rubber VW used. Dipstick either the top part snaps off, the orange lower part stops locking in or cracks ( got that, should get a new one when I next pop in to the spares place) and of course the water pump will either leak or the thermostat will not operate correctly, however I can buy the whole lot as a spare part, only 4 bolts to undo as opposed to the extra 6 for the pump alone, that always seem to rust solid in the casting. Inside the common thing to fail is the indicator stalk and the wiper one, but the pattern parts are good and cheap. I can get all of them as pattern parts as well, for a lot less than going 50m down the road to the VW dealership spares department. only thing I buy from them are wiper blades, because they are cheaper than the other types and work better, and I used them when I had a Ford as well for the same reason. While you are there check the little rubber PCV parts, the hoses and the grommets like to crack, and can cause lumpy idle without setting a fault code. And of course, do not overtighten the rubber valve cover, if it leaks take off, make sure the edges are not warped and deformed around the bolt holes and put a new gasket on there, and put back on a clean surface both sides, without any sealer, it should not need it at all, and use the right torque and sequence.

    Im having transmission problems. The car, vw golf gls 2.0, will drive fine and randomly it will drop from 3 or even 4th gear to 2nd. or some days it just wont even shift that high. Shows a code : P0715 = input/ turbine speed sensor a circuit. i have changed some speed sensor that i was told to and that didnt fix anything. This is going on for a very long time. Changed the transmission 2 times and still the same problem. IDK what else to do, it just cost too much to put it in a shop. Please let me know what i can do ! thanks

    it may seem oversimplified, but the Asians put the cheap stuff in the interior and the good stuff under the hood, European carmakers seem to do it the opposite way. I know which one I prefer....(and honestly, for later models the 'cheap' interior statement isn't even true anymore)

    VW is not Toyota etc. where you can neglect maintenance for very long stretches of time. They need regular inspections and maintenance for proper function as do all performance autos. Example that impeller looks as if the fluids have not be changed or was not filled with the correct stuff. Just my 2 cents worth I am a proud VW owner love the technology and the feel when you drive them :-)

    I just bought a Mk3 golf with the 2.0. It’s been overheating and coolant bubble is overflowing. New thermostat, good water pump with metal impeller, good compression test. I’m beginning to think I just have an air bubble in my system. I hear it’s pretty common with these. And I can only get about 3/4 of a gallon of water in the system when it’s supposed to hold more like 1.5 gallons.

    So much for German engineering! I would not experience all these problems together in any Japanese equivalent. I mean... how could you expect an oil dipstick holder to fall apart?!!!

    you can expect ALL of these problems in a Japanese equivalent. Dipsticks breaking are not just a VW problem. As a mechanic, i seen it on a lot of cars.

  • @pcnepal

    Granted, nothing lasts forever... but some "smart" VW engineers opted for some cheap plastic as the material for oil dipstick holder! They also put a puny roll pin to retain the cross shaft inside their 02J 5-sp gear box mated to the same 2-L engine. The result: roll pin breaks; cross shaft punctures case. Do a brief google search to see how frequent this happens! Of course, if you are a die-hard euro car fan you will conclude that I deserve to drive a "boring Accord/ Camry" LOL!

    Damn boi. I thought the cooling system on my Saab was convoluted and weak, now I'm glad it's not worse lol. The most annoying thing and typically the only thing that fails though is on any B2x4 or B2x5 engine (which was every Saab from 1994-2002 and all 4 cylinder 9-5s to 2010) is there's a short metal pipe that connects from the water pump to the engine block that has an o-ring on each end of the pipe and it ALWAYS leaks after 2 years. I have Saabs WIS system and apparently they told the techs to slather the oring with an rtv gasket, I've done that since reading it but they still only last for 3 or 4 years. Makes sure your water pump never breaks though, it's such a PITA to do the water pump that you're willing to buy a new one for the $130 rather than just changing out the $1 o-rings. Once I'm in there I don't want to go back for a couple years lol.
