90's DOOM wads are just... a different breed. An art lost to time, and an art that can no longer be replicated. God bless the 90's 😔.

I knew Batman Doom was going to make this list. I'm one of the music composers (I was 16 back then) and am proud to have contributed to it.

@@DoomKid I might upload proper "studio" versions to my channel at some point. They are not stellar, but no generic MIDI player does them justice.

I have an old Canadian CD from the mid-90s that contain hundreds of wads, a shareware copy of DOOM, and even a built-in level editor. Though I'm sure all these files can be found on the internet, it may be hard to dig through thousands of pages to find all of them, so it's cool to own a piece of what the community did back in the days.

I remember there being an Aliens mod for the first Doom. It was sooooooooo awesome! It replaced textures, sound effects, enemies, weapons, and so on.

Thanks. This video got me to start running custom wads through DOSBox rather than GZDoom. Makes for a more...authentic experience. Definitely feels more at home for 90s wads.

As someone that didn't grow up with Doom mods in the 90's, I strongly appreciate these vids for showing me what it was like, especially since I've been on a big classic Doom binge lately.

Does anyone remember Barney Doom? It was the first graphical Mod I ever downloaded and it introduced the idea of Doom mods. Follow closely by Simpsons Doom and Southpark Doom, finally moving onto Batman and Ghostbusters.

Dude. You missed Aliens Doom with all the movie audio clips. Was my favorite. Bill Paxton always saying shit and the screams like “eat this!” “Lets rooooock! “Their coming outta the god damned walls!”

I actually managed to make that audio glitch happen when I was a kid. I had been been learning a lot about the doom was format and I was just setting random values in the wad file. And I set a couple of sound patches to have like a -1 size (4 billion on overflow). And doom played several of the audio effects all at once, since they were just in the wad file one after the next. I don't remember it playing as much as what you just said, but I probably stopped at before too long. I wonder what the sizes of the audio lumps are set too in that's batman wad file.

I remember downloading Starwars doom wad and DBZ back in the day. MEMORY UNLOCKED!

I think the newer Simpsons mod is much better: correct voice lines, better sprites and also music for all doom levels. It also works with the original Ultimate Doom, but without custom music. 😊

I played heaps of Simpsons Doom back when I was little.

4.45 REM on bat files are comments. So the REM lines are dont executed, but removing the REM on the lines makes that line executes

You know what mod made me love the Doom mod scene? a Dragon Ball Z gameplay mod, you had your kiensans, special beam canons, double sundays and of course the beast of the mighty Kame Hame Ha, of course all of this ones were literally doom weapons but with an anime skin on top of it, but damn was pretty damn rad to be in the shoes of Goku killing demons with energy balls from your hands, sadly i lost that wad in a HDD failure back in 2003, and i had been trying to find that old ass wad since then. Edit: ohh! that's the mod! its exactly as how i first saw it in a DBZ fanzine was so damn cool to use the Hame Ha wave and other powers and that blue weird looking hud, man this is pure nostalgia indeed.

Even though I have never been much of a fan of skin mods/hack which only are used to change graphics, i gotta Say that in the case of Doom, there are some that i appreciate quite fondly, like the DBZ mod which i used to play with Freedom 2 when i was a kid.

I once played the South Park mod combined with the Embers of Armageddon, the Doom 2016 weapons mod. It was worth the mix.

Oh hell yeah! The older Simpsons Doom and South Park Doom were the best! That cacophony on Simpsons/SP clips never cease to amuse me. I still love to play them from time to time, good memories.

as this is the 30th anniversary, i used to play most of these MODs back in the day in the 90s

I remember Boothill/Fistful of Doom but the others I wasn't aware of, but it gives me something to take a look at with GZDoom

I loved all the old starwars mods back then :) reaaaally want to do a gzdoom starwars mod at some point with a mix of sprites, voxels and md3 models (there are many starwars quake 3 player models). I wondered about the similarities between the doom mod and the starwars game, cool that they were inspired by a mod

Holy fuck. I played most of these as a kid. You just brought back memories I didnt know I had.

The first doom mod I played was in 1996 called Alien Doom, it was a full campaign and incredibly well made. However I still cannot find it or any reference of it yet. It felt almost on par with Dark Forces visually, not audibly. Thanks for your video, it made me download mods I hope I'll have time to play later.

Loved this video!!!! I remembered the first time I played Simpsons doom. Surprisingly I found it on Kazaa (anyone remember that?) and was stoked that it was even a thing so I downloaded it. Batman Doom was also a funny story. I didn’t know that some wads needed the dehacked patch to play correctly (mind you I was using ZDOOM at the time) so nothing worked correctly and I couldn’t beat the first level. Here are some mods I would recommend Army of Darkness doom Ghostbusters doom (sadly never finished) Final fantasy Doom The Tick doom Sonic Doom 2:Bots on Mobius Codename Hyena (you have to edit the wad and get rid of the Skin for it to work correctly) There’s tons more, but if i told you all of them I’d be here all day lol.

Bro this is really taking me back to when I used to play doom mods at school and at home. South park was the most popular choice by all the kids back then. This is such a time capsule here.

Doom 2 Xtreme and Doom 2 Xtreme gold are great classic wads along with Wolfensdoom

Fun fact: The creator of the Dragon Ball Z Doom mod is also the Japanese subtitle translator/writer for the official release of Dragon Ball in the US.

Nothing I hadn't heard about before. But I was surprised Aliens TC by Justin Fisher wasn't on the list. Probably the most famous and historicly important mod of them all. It was the first ever total conversion for DOOM, made by one single guy which led to him getting job offers as game designer. Other ones that spring to mind are Zombies DOOM and Army of Darkness TC.

Playing 90s wads in 2023 is just had another vibe...

It took me ages to work that out - apparently the quote is right from an MK game too, had no idea!

Thanks to Saintmillion's video on the development of Dark Forces we know that game was being worked on BEFORE Doom and the StarDoom mod although the team who was working on it got sent a beta of doom (probably the press release one) and I'm almost certain StarDoom was a pretty good outline for what Dark Forces could be at the time for the team at LucasArts

Unless you're talking about the other three entire Simpsons graphic replacements? Those are common. I have two of them on CD, the other newer one is on DoomWadStation.

These are all mods that were completed before 2000. SRB 2 is great, but it has come a long way, and was never a vanilla Doom mod, having been built from Doom Legacy. A really fun mod for sure though.

Thank you! It's really hard to get recommendations for MS-DOS vanilla mods and TCs. I have a special Pentium 133 laptop to play DOS games, mostly DOOM. I'll absolutely must check StarDoom and Fistful mods! Also HacX is pretty nice, though needs fixing save file names to properly work. P.S. If you wish to clear MS-DOS shell - use CLS command. Mashing Return key looks silly.

Hey funny thing, in the Mortal Kombat Doom 2 in your vid the music that is playing first is NOT actually from Mortal Kombat. You can hear the difference halfway through. It's actually a 90's house song from the group 2 unlimited with the title Twilight zone.

6:55 he says "Fine". It comes from one of the first cutscenes in MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero. The complete line is: "Fine. I get into the temple. And then what? What's inside?". EDIT: Nevermind, I just noticed that someone else in the comments already said that.

I played fistful in gzdoom with a couple extra mods. It was very fun, and also doubled as a project to learn how to place royalty free music in davinci resolve. I can't remember what mod enabled the hat toss damage feature, but it was hilarious to toss your hat at the low tier enemies and see them gib.

Those discs have so much random content.. With some gems mixed in!

Also these can be played in Zdoom, GZdoom and Zandronium. I ran these wads back in 2002-2005 via legacy Doom.

I'm really surprised you didn't touch on Aliens TC. I play the ZDoom editions of both that and Batman doom and they hold up so well. The Sky May Be is another fun joke mod from the time.

Try renaming the whole Star Wars Doom 2 .zip file to a .pk3 file instead, and try loading that in GZDoom. With luck, that should do it!

There's a really good one called Sonic Robo Blast 2 but only the first 2 versions and the original games made in TGF instead of Doom are from the 90s. It's still being worked on.
