I spent hours every day reviewing all the cheat lists known as reference sheets and mysterious objects of cheaty goodness known as text books. I remember playing the original Sims as a kid and keeping my nose to the grindstone with the Goth family having them work up the promotion ladder of their respective careers and saving up funds just so I could move into the second largest house in the starter neighborhood. When I finally got there I was so excited I actually called up my friend just to let him know of my success. His response was an unimpressed “So what? I’ve got sims in the biggest house in the game - because I used cheats.” He then explained to me how to enter the the appropriate cheat code into the game and within the hour the surviving Goth’s were millionaires and I had learned a vaulable lesson about working hard and staying on the straight and narrow.

I think microtransactions are ok to a degree. Really I think paying for extra content should be limited to DLC episodes and an in-game store maybe; never necessary to advance. But cheat codes are fun too and so long as they’re kept to single-player modes only I don’t see the issue. Some of my best memories were using cheats to get cool stuff or skip to whatever level I want but so many games today demand you play the way they want you to.

I’m partial to the LEGO video games’ cheats. From the useful Stud x10, Invincibility, or Fast Force/Build/Interaction to the hilarious Helium Mode, Disguise Mode, or Daisy Chain, I love the different cheats the games have had. Some of them, along with some characters and vehicles, could even be unlocked, without paying a stud, by entering Cheat Codes, while others had to be unlocked by finding the corresponding Red/Pink Brick and then purchasing them with studs. I really loved the games where you could unlock all the Stud Multiplier cheats, as well as Stud Magnet, using codes, making getting True Jedi or whatever a snap, as well as making it quick and easy to get enough studs to unlock every other cheat, character, and vehicle in the game.

I actually have a minor obsession with finding the secret levels in every MegaWAD (32 level map packs) and I usually do so with god mode enabled. For me it's more about exploration than combat. Up, Down, Left, Right, Hold A and Press Start was the second one that came to mind, but actually if we're talking about Sonic games, I might have put the code from Sonic 2 where you had to play sounds from the sound test in a numerical order that turned out to be the release date of the actual game. I can't actually remember what the code was (it started with 1,9,9,2 I think) but the cleverness of it blew my tiny young mind at the time.

Ahh the sims money cheat! In Sims 1 it was Rosebud that got you 1,000 simoleons. Also, when I was young I would play a lot of GTA: Vice City, and there was a cheat to make cars float on water (I'd use this to get to other areas of the map bc I would rather drive around than play the story at the time) and also a cheat to make it forever rainy. There were a lot of cheats for that game. Me and my brother had the whole list written down

Now I loved the code in Spyro that gave you 99 lives I do believe it was similar to the Konami Code but I’m not sure but my favorite has to go to Mortal Kombat Trilogy that when the code is put in would allow you do do every characters every one of their “alitys” with the push of a single button. Every finishing move from simple fatalities, brutalities, even animalities and babalities, each was assigned to specific button like brutality if memory serves me right was the triangle button. Brutality was especially a pain in the ass to learn since it was hitting so many buttons in a specific order and not just any number in any order. The cheat allowed you to do these finishing moves with ease and I have to admit that after a while, I began to feel guilty about using the cheat in the first place no matter how awesome it was. If given the chance I of course would use it again I mean let’s be serious here. 😋

I'm proud to say that I played Sims 3 for 7 Generations (meaning my starter-sim not counted 7 sims were raised and died) before realizing that this cheat was a possibility. If I remember correctly "motherlode" was the first cheat I ever used in ANY game.

@@Fairy_Teeth It can get a little bit boring after some time, but if the Sims look like complete Nutjobs you can have a lot of fun I remember laughing my ass off many times because my neighborhood looked so stupid I had a lot of fun with that game ... Sadly the CAS in S4 is nowhere near the potential of the S3 CAS... Damn it, I am going to reinstall S3 today, no matter what I have to delete first!

Wait, I thought the Konami Code had "select, start" at the end of it. I know some people say it does; even in the examples they give (Deftones song) it says select, start in it. I've always been so confused on this. Did the Konami Code originally NOT have that in it and it was added at some point, or are some people just wrong about the code?

Select/start is not a part of the code. The reason why some say it is is because most games require that you use the konami code in the pause menu, and than exit the pause menu. Most controller based games also have the pause menu button set to select/start. So the konami code is "up up down down left right b a" and than you press select/start to get back to the game.

I remember using the konami code with the first sonic game. It made the level score into random characters and not count for anything, but it was fun being able to turn into into any creature and populate the level with as many of them as you wish. You could also turn into a ring and spawn ridiculous amounts of rings that you could then collect, but as with the score they did not count for anything. It was great entertainment for us as kids.
