Here's an old one: Lost Vikings 2. You beat the first level by walking all three characters to the right, and there are no enemies, but if you try hard enough, you can get one of them killed with fall damage, at which point the game decides you're not good enough to play it and gives each player character new moves and/or buffs that make the puzzle-based exploration and combat easier.

In the tutorial for Off when the Cheshire Cat like NPC, The Judge is explaining mechanics other than attacking, if you continue attacking The Judge instead of carrying out the next step of the tutorial, he will yell at you until you're about two or so blows from killing him. In the Spider-Man 1 ps2 game there’s also a way to amaze Bruce Campbell by being unbelievably awful. The tutorial is set in a black void with I think 3 buildings. During the tutorial Bruce will direct you to a door which you can knock on to produce very weak enemies to practice fight. The enemies do almost no damage so you really have to try to let them kill you, but if you manage it you’ll unlock a hidden line of dialogue about how it wasn’t supposed to be possible to die in the tutorial 😂

I know in ArmA 3's tutorial you can increasingly make your commanding officer more and more annoyed as you fail the basic mechanics. To the point he continues the tutorial for you while making statements that boil down to "Oh my god, I can't believe they're letting you train these guys" as the tutorial is framed as you teaching the AFF soldiers and makes you wonder what NATO was thinking.

Being the first of its type, it's only natural that SimCity has a tutorial to help you learn the ropes in the form of the green-haired mascot Dr. Wright. He'll sometimes pop up to explain the basics on his own, and you can call on him any time for more tips. Do this too much though, and he'll get fed up with you and remind you that YOU are the mayor, not him, and election day is coming up. I also really liked the Wright Files in the SNES manual detailing the backstories of failed cities and the reasons why they failed so much.

A cool list would be something like ‘7 side characters who we left behind, only to realise much later that we could have saved them’ - one example is Faridah Malik in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Your VTOL crashes and she tells you to run, which given the insane number of enemies you do, meaning she meets an unfortunate end. It was only much later I realised that by killing all the very scary enemies very quickly (difficult when you’ve spent the entire game being very sneaky) you can actually save her. Not sure about other examples (aside from various mass effect ones).

  • @phildman132

The Deus Ex series has a history of this, in the first Deus Ex game it actually does this twice, also again to your helicopter pilot Jock, who at one point is blown up by a bomb, but if you find the suspicious mechanic at the base before taking off you can tell Jock to check the engine where he finds and removes the bomb before it activates. Also in the first Deus Ex, you as JC were encouraged to escape an apartment while your brother Paul heroically sacrifices his life fighting off large number of enemy forces, with you finding his dead body later when you infiltrate the enemy lab. However staying and fighting (or actually just leaving by the front door instead of the window that the game tells you to exit by), Paul survives, and instead you find him alive and imprisoned within that same lab. Him surviving is obviously canon as he also appears in the following game.

The loss is in part because it's so standard these days to just put all the info on how to play a game in the game itself with tutorials. It's also because the games back then needed massive manuals to tell the game's backstory and lore because they didn't have the means to put it in the actual game. Now they have cutscenes, character dialog, and sometimes even in game textbooks to tell you the same thing. But yes, those manuals were pretty impressive. A lot of them had details that you'd never know about otherwise even with story rich games where there were a lot of information presented in the game.

You could actually get sent directly to Fort Leavenworth (the jail cell in Americas Army) from a live server as well for too many negative ROE violations. doing team damage within a few seconds of the match start or too many teamkills (or shooting civilians in some of the maps) the sever would kick you, and your game client would start a local game running that map. Me as a kid in 2005 who still had dial up and a 60 gig, 7200 RPM IDE Hard drive the real punishment was the 5 minutes spent waiting for prison to load and then the other 5 minutes trying to get back into the server with my friends. If I recall if you open the console, enable SV_cheats and turn on no clip the other jail cells all have developer easter eggs in them

One time when I had either some intruders onboard or a fire, my O2 was also damaged/offline, and I knew about it (but had to deal with the other situation first). The hotkey to open all doors, by default, is next to another hotkey I was trying to use instead while venting/dealing with the situation. So I could only helplessly watch as all my doors opened, draining the limited remaining O2 and putting me into a death spiral I couldn't recover from.

Except tutorials began way before manuals fell out of style and they didn't die, most games still download with a digital manual, or you can find the PDF. @@insaincaldo That ritual has been dead for a decade and a half. It was physical, and isn't something that can be digitized. As for the environment, while I agree, game manuals aren't in the top 90% of reasons why the environment is fucked.(Not to get off topic, but you'll notice we're not going to save the environment from ourselves anyway) It probably takes as much energy to host and use digital guides as it did to print one en masse. The ritual was as much about reading in general as it was about reading up on the game before entering a digital space.

I can't remember how I managed it, but I vaguely remember accidentally failing the FTL tutorial once. After having attempted several playthroughs. It's a great game, but unless you can learn how to use the keyboard macros efficiently, memorize or research all the unique events, and learn how to optimize whatever ship you're flying with whatever comes your way, the game will essentially be death by dice. I've never quite completed it, although I've had the rebel flagship down to its last few hull points before choking. You should probably study the wiki or a few videos if you're really focused on winning. Thing is, it's one of those games that's great fun even when it's kicking your butt. At least the first hundred times or so.

If you reload instead of switching during the course he yells at you that switching weapons is faster than reloading. This is made all the worse by the fact that reloading your primary weapon with piercing bullets allows you to hit multiple targets at once instead of switching to your sidearm is in fact the best way to get the target time for the achievement, so not only does the tutorial mock you, it's wrong for doing so.
