7.62x39 vs 7.62x51

There's a lot of interest in short barrel 7.62x51 (308) guns out there in the community, but one question really should be asked:
At what barrel length does a 7.62x51 become worse than 7.62x39?
In this video we bring out a variety of guns and barrel lengths chambered in both cartridges and do real science to find out.
InRange is entirely viewer supported:

powder burn becomes a major variable when barrel length is shortened. I imagine you could get better velocities out of .308, if you use a different powder to try and get maximum powder burn before the bullet leaves the barrel. however at that point you may aswell be developing another cartridge entirely.

Richard Mack Right. You could technically do it probably, but you’d also likely run into chamber pressure issues as well as the round probably being non-interchangeable to full length guns due to various problems (gas port pressure for gas operated guns, or unlocking the rollers too soon in a full size cetme pattern gun). Might work, but has huge potential issues that aren’t worth the development.

The powders for 308 are all a lot slower than x39. Although keeping towards the fast end would probably be a good idea. From testing I've done the slowest powder produced the highest velocity in all barrel lengths but that only went down to 16in. There is probably an inversion point somewhere south of that where moving peak pressure earlier is a good thing.

  • @drifterbbb3649

What you and they are saying is a myth that has been disproved for over 50 years. Powder does not burn the length of the barrel. The powder M80 ball uses will be completely consumed within an inch of the bullet leaving the casing. Maximum pressure has been hit, all oxygen bearing compounds consumed, no more burn. That M80 ammo will have the same amount of unburnt powder in a 2 inch barrel as it would a 20 inch barrel, because once the oxygen is gone, there is no more burn. When the bullet exits the barrel on that 8" gun it is literally uncorking with an insane amount of pressure behind it, probably over 20,000PSI. That is why it is so loud with so much flash. Internal ballistics and muzzle flash have been studied to death. Heat and pressure are by far the biggest contributors to flash. Also, the fastest powder (as in MV) in a long barrel will very very likely be the fastest powder in a short barrel for a given bullet. Barrel length has ZERO impact on CHAMBER PRESSURE. The powder used in surplus M80 ammo is simply not the ideal powder for velocity, just cheap to make and easy to measure, but no powder will do well in an 8 inch 308. The 7.62x39 has an ideal barrel length that is SHORT because its pressure curve is no where near as long as .308 Win. You won't get .308 to perform well in an 8" barrel, not without essentially making it a different caliber with a different operating pressure, essentially downloading it to have a similar pressure curve as x39 or Blackout. Here is a test that wasn't done 60 years ago by Phil Sharpe or Homer Powley. Note the velocity over barrel length chart, "Velocity data load" www.thetruthaboutguns.com/the-truth-about-barrel-length-muzzle-velocity-and-accuracy/

Hey Ian and Karl - Just saw this and thought I would mention that one of the likely (I haven't checked what exactly they use) reasons that the .308 lost more than the 7.62 x 39 is because the .308 probably uses a slower burning power relative to the 7.62 x 39, and so the .308 might not have burned all of its powder upon exiting the barrel.

I have made the same argument against using +p or +p+ rounds in revolvers with less than a 6" barrel. You get excess blast and recoil and you pay for that wasted powder. A standard pressure round at the ranges you are probably going to be using a snubie at will do the job. Practice, round choice and shot placement is what controls that.

one thing to keep in mind is ballistic coefficient , in the .308 your likely to have a much higher bc, i ran the numbers in my applied ballistic app and at 100 yds the .308 would have more fps, so the benefit for the .308 shorty is more power at further distance than the 7.62x39. now i didnt know exactly what bullet was used so i used an estimate for the bcs.. so i could be off.
