You can throw 7.62 and .308 into a rifle chambered for .308, you shouldn't really throw .308 into a rifle chambered for 7.62, just saved you a million youtube videos, you're welcome.

Also, it's not recommended to shoot modern commercial ammunition through old firearms due to higher chamber pressures due to modern faster burning powder. It's not due to case dimensions.

This is a quote from the NRA Shooting Illustrated. Hope it's okay for me to copy and paste it here as I am giving credit to the source. "The actual pressure differences between aren’t all that large-a 62,000 psi limit for the .308 Win. and 60,200 psi for the 7.62 NATO-but it’s enough to be concerned with; a tight chamber, or an overly dirty chamber could pose a pressure issue. No one wants to damage a firearm, and we certainly don’t ever want to see anyone hurt; so keep the golden rule in mind: a .308 Win. chamber can handle both .308 Win. and 7.62 NATO ammo safely, but if your rifle is marked for 7.62 NATO ammo, it’s best to use only that."

I bought a 1916 Spanish Mauser before I spent any time on the internet. I bought a few boxes of surplus ammo but almost exclusively used factory 308 ammo for 10 years before even hearing anything about pressure differences. Federal ammo was the only factory ammo that has shown any signs of high pressure (flattening primers). But the gun has never failed. I have a different rifles for hunting now and need to rebarrel my mauser and am going to do so in .308. I plan on going with a 16 or 18 inch barrel and mainly for subsonic ammo but I know that it will handle occasional full power loadings for hunting.
