7.62x39 Bullet Drop - Demonstrated and Explained

Who Tee Who I love your videos, you are genuinely an honest and enthusiastic in every thing you do. The 7.62x39 is a fantastic round, born out of war and makes a great hunting caliber out to 175-200 yards. I have a friend that hunts with this caliber and I sighted his rifle in at 25 yards, dead on. This gives a point-blank range (PBR) out to 220 yards. Do a drop chart using your info in the video, but zero at 25 yards and you will be pleasantly surprised to see that the difference in climb and drop out to 200 yards, does not exceed 3 inches. This is great for sighting in the rifle and never having to worry about hold over out to 200 yards. Place the crosshairs on the vitals and shoot. You should do a video to prove this, because hunting with this caliber is cheap which allows for more practice.

Appreciate you watching bigtime 🙏. Thanks for the comment
Primary Arms has some in-house branded scopes and red dots that utilize what they call the ACSS reticle. This is a simplified aiming reticle that has bullet drop and wind drift compensation out to 500 yards for 7.62x39 or .300 Blackout. The red dot version I have only has dots to go out to 450 yards and uses a horseshoe type reticle that is more useful for short range shooting, out to 200 yards I'd say. Both the variable 1-6x scope and 30mm red dot were not terribly expensive and the ACSS reticle was worth it for both, it takes alot of guess work out of shooting at range with 7.62x39mm. I highly recommend both for use with this round, they are solid optics and work as designed.
Mine really loves the military classic 124gr HP. I pulled off a 5 shot 5/8" group at 200. Average group at 200 was 1 1/2- 1 3/4. There is nothing more exciting than a budget rifle with budget ammo giving top shelf results. It's a smile factory!

This demonstration shows two very useful factoids. 1. The cartridge will group reliably (with a proper rifle, don't expect this from an issue SKS or Ak47) at ranges of two hundred yards or more. As usual, groups grow with range to target. 2. "Calculations" are useful and reliable. Of course, they are only as good as the information entered. So, the folks who cannot get reliable information from such are those who are rather sloppy with their input information or refuse to read instructions. Good work, Who. You are far more intelligent than you pretend.
Man that is a sweeeet little shootin iron. Thats a fantastic 200 yrd group. And dang that cheap wolf ammo doing exactly what they say. Great stuff.

I have found the various sub brands of the Barnaul made ammo to be surprisingly accurate, this proves it to be so beyond doubt. Certainly overcomes the constant comment I hear that 7.62x39 is not an accurate round. Thanks for the video, I'd like to have seen a 25 yd target with the 100 yard zero.
@garytrainer748
2 жыл бұрын
@@fiveowaf454 yep. Though i think people say the round is not accurate because they are linking it with an ak-47 rifle. The rifle may not have the finest of accuracy. But that doesn't mean the round is inaccurate. Some folks just don't see the whole picture. Good thing the rest of us do😉👍
a few years ago i almost picked up the 300 blackout ruger ranch. the guy at the gun counter swayed me to the 7.62 and it was well worth it after the ammo crisis. sweet shooter for 400$
Oh gosh thank you so much for this video! I’ve had my Ruger x39 for a year now and hunted with it a lot. I purposely only hunted to where I wouldn’t have a shot longer than 100 yards because my rifle was zeroed at 100 yards. I did not know what it would do at 50 yards and I sure didn’t know what it would do at 200. Now I am more confident in using this rifle at longer ranges. 6 inches of drop at 200 yards is easy to compensate. If you’re aiming a white tail you have roughly 12 inches of a kill zone. I would compensate by aiming at the back bone of the deer and the bullet should punch in right in the middle of the shoulder. Awesome video my man’

That's why I use a 200m zero. Easier to shoot 3" low at 100m than to shoot 6" high at 200m.
Sight in for 195 yards (3" high at 100). This gives you a 220 yard point blank range. A deep pops out at 50 yards you hold dead center. A deer pops out at 200 yards, you hold dead center. No guessing out to 225 yards. At max range the energy has dropped below the 1000 ft-lb threshold. So, it's a dead on hold to max PBR at which point the bullet drops below PBR and energy at the same time. It doesn't get any simpler than that. Thanks for the vid.
You prove the haters wrong 7.62 ×39 can be extremely accurate round

Awesomeness! Thank you for finally being able to stretch this caliber out!
I used to make soft point bullets out of old surplus .303 British by clipping off the tips of fmj rounds with a wire cutter. Accuracy wasn't to bad. You mite try that with your cheap 762x39 fmj to see what the accuracy difference is and test the expansion.

Jeremy Frix, for a bit Tula loaded 154 grain (10 gram) bullets in 7.62x39mm ammo. My chronograph measures the velocity as 2160 fps; using a CZ 527 rifle with barrel of just over 18 inches or 470mm. Quite enough to take deer. I load the cartridge with a 150 grain bullet (use .303 British bullets) up to about 2250 fps in MY rifle. In effect, a bolt action .30-30. Easy to carry through the woods, will take a deer.

I use a ballistic calculator (I use Vortex's) and make a DOPE card, and affix to the inside of the lens caps. I go to the range with and validate the ballistic calculator at 50, 100 and 200 yards. It's always within an inch. FWIW, I zero my 7.62x39 rifles at 100 yards, and drop at 200 yards is ~6 consistently. Works like a champ. Great round, great rifles (SKS, Mini-30, Ruger American, etc.).
Really enjoying your bullet drop videos mate. A lot of people don't realise how much work it takes to hit targets or game out past 200. There is a lot of youtube clips which demonstrate how VERY experienced shooters can hit targets at longer ranges, but those videos don't show how much work and practice before the camera starts rolling it takes to get that good. Looking forward to your 22-250 drop video.

Interestingly I use the 25-200 yard Battle Zero for my Arsenal SGL AK. Slightly different concepts then the 300m “Belt Buckle” Battle Zero for the 7.62x39. I’m dead on POA/POI @ 25 and again @ 200 yards. On paper it looks to be a calculated drop around 12” @ 300 yards. I’m not a hunter, but it could be useful for people that only have access to 25 yard indoor ranges.

Good informative video. Thank you very much.
Another thing basically the bullet hits the ground the same time as if it were dropped at muzzle height. The speed of the bullet and how much it slows while traveling or its Balistic coefficient down range is where you get your drop, a fast bullet like a 22-250 drops about the same as a .22lr in time, the difference is the .22-250 has moved 4000 feet in 1 sec where the .22 lr only moved 1000 feet in 1 sec. Make it eaiser to understand, for me anyways.

OUTSTANDING
I used to competition shooting out to 1000 metres with 7.62 ammo using peep sights and an Omark single shot rifle it is amazing how accurate you can be allowing for range, windage and heat mirage considering the drop of the bullet.
Took down caribou at 615 yards with 7.62x39 out of ar47 after walking the round in because of elevation (shooting up a huge mountain and with wind gusts of 10-15 mph). So, it’s capable. Used a Nikon 3-9 with BDC reticle.

Great video 👍 thanks for using the wolf polyformance don't know why but for a relatively low cost round it always produces consistently tight groups. I've been using it as my "zero round" with great results. Ruger really knows what they're doing matching up the American ranch with 7. 62x39. Great combo here in central Florida for shooting in the brush. You rarely get a chance for more than a 150yd shot.

7.62 x 39 was my favorite target round. I was also impressed by how accurate a $79 SKS was right out of the crate. Well I did strip it and clean the cosmoline off of it. But I never expected $79 rifle with open sites would be so accurate. The SKS has a real way to mount a scope the cover with mounts is not it you must get the saddle mount where you drill and tap the receiver and it worked well for me . Shell defector needed so they don't beat the scope up . Remove ammo well and you use clips . Real accuracy is good .

It's not so much the ammo as the AK that makes it an "inaccurate round" it does combat accuracy very very well
Round was designed for firefights within 300 meters,or 330 yards. Since they figured out that's where most firefights occur. For anything further out, they had the Dragunov, and PKM.

Sight it in 2- 3 inches high at 100 you'll still be fine at 25 and 50 and you only be approximately two or three inches low at 200 so then all you got to do is hold dead on out to 200 no worries, because with that round you shouldn't be shooting any deer size or larger game any farther away than that anyway.

Very cool, thank you brother! Today I just picked up a ruger m77 Mark II stainless 7.62x39. I live in Wyoming so effectively we need rifles that can confidently shoot out to 300 yards especially for elk. Some go further, but I don't. So I was curious about the ballistics. Compared to my 223 or 300 win, this thing is a slow heavy drop. But as you've shown up to 100yrds will be a fun doe harvest rifle. Thank you again for taking the time to do this!
