Thanks for this segment. I travel this road several times a year, I have family in Safford, I live in Phoenix. I recognized the location at the start, but this is a very different view of the road. Unfortunately there is no other route across Arizona that avoids Interstate!

I avoided riding in the morning where the vehicles were driving into the sun. There are blind spots and they won't be looking for bicyclists.

I know you guys tried a number of tires before the trip and settled on the lighter narrower tires for weight and speed... but doing all this cross country on debris strewn roads.. you might want to consider Schwalbe marathon PLUS tires. They are wider ad heavier ... but they are almost bulletproof... lot less tire changes.

dregerclock I agree, that is probably the best choice for a cross-country trip. I was wondering if the Tuffy's that were installed in the tires might have been chafing on that tube. the rear tire they have is rated good for Speed but I don't think it's rated for a lot of miles.

Your right but we pulled them off for the trip because we ride 3 miles an hour slower and that accounts for a lot of hours in the seat! But we should have brought one set for days when the road was truly rough! we are sorry about that now but we are learning through trial and ERROR....

Recumbent trikes and trailer parks go hand in hand better than many presently understand. And RV parks too. I am a senior and will be test riding a TRIOT trike sometime in March. They look tremendous. Check them out. But the best long distance touring trikes are the HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS, the Azub Ti-Fly, and the Catrike Expedition. Another Greenspeed model is well suited for that as well.

I love your video - and your trikes. Can you tell me what kind of trikes you have - how did you like their performance on your travels? I'm also concerned about the cost - I would need an electric motor to help me over the big hills and for when I get too tired. I would love any information you can send me - thanks so much. I would love to travel as much as possible on a trike - maybe even meet you out there. Shirlene

That road wasn't designed to have anything go down that free space. It's a safety net for the trucks, hence the rumble strip, so vehicles know where the edge of the road is.

I've watched your videos before, but I have a question. I can't remember what you said when you first started your tour regarding the riding shape or lack thereof you were in, and how many miles starting out you rode per day for the first couple of weeks??? I'm not in great riding shape right now, so I was curious regarding starting a tour. By the way, I have a Catrike Expedition trike with all my needed gear all ready. Lastly, water is the heaviest commodity, but we can't live without it. LOL. How much water did you carry each day per person? And how much did you really need and drink each day? Don't want to carry more than I really need, but obviously don't want to run out in the middle of nowhere. Thank you for your reply. Your videos are very encouraging.

We are not riding through cities any longer! It dosesn't feel safe. Nelson wanted to get Arlene back to Tennessee so we moved ahead to Apache Gold. He didn't feel right just leaving us outside of Pheonix....so we missed some beautiful days. But we are seeing a lot of other beauty!

Oh man riding into that sunrise, extremely extremely dangerous, specially on a road with no burm and rumble strips wow. You are very fortunate you were not run over, specially on a recumbent. I would even fear doing this in my velomobile. Not a smart thing to do.

that is a dangerous road to be riding on the tires look to tiny for the strain and weight. get a tandem that has larger tires and avoid busy roads. not worth the risk. it is beautiful by the way and if you can do so can I, I am overweight too. and will be riding my bike a lot this summer.

Man those cars go by and never slow down or give you guy some room . Every time I come up on a human powered machine and giving a chance I would go into the oncoming lane to give some peace to the bicyclist . If I know I cant do that and I am not too close I would beep my horn once . Like beep and slow down . I never ever want to hit anyone of frighten them in any way . I seen what an automobile can do to a bike and the person that is peddling it . It like seeing a hit deer on the interstate . Not good at all . Poor guy did not have a chance or what hit him . It is something no one want to see . I threw up when I got out of my car . I felt sick like I never felt before . I been hit by a car before on the highway . I know if a person lived threw that and lived the pain I went threw . Be vary careful both auto drivers and bicyclist . One other thing .for bicyclist when your riding in a pack ride no more than 5 in a group and between the groups leave 150 ft between each group . This way if or when a car over take that the passing car can get back his lane if an on coming car show up . Everyone have to think about driving and riding and sloe down .

Why are you not driving in the lane? You should be riding your bikes in the lane. Unless that was an Interstate where bicycle are not allowed, you should have been riding in the lane.

  • @whataburgerchicken

Sometimes riding in the lane is actually a lot safer. If you are in the side the drivers still have to go into the other lane to go around you so you are not really making it easier for them by staying to the side. The real danger is not people come up behind you, but people in front of you turning left or trying to cross into traffic. By being out in the lane you are not only easier for people at intersections, but you are giving yourself more space to get out of their way in case they pull out in front of you.

"Why are you not driving in the lane?" Are you stupid? Traffic is going 50-60 MPH faster than they are.
