$150 bike camper: DIY micro mobile home (downloadable plans)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Paul Elkins fell for micro-camping in 2002 when he toured the country in his cabover “stealth camper”. Sure he could make something more affordable, this year he began building a nomadic micro-shelter based on the Airstream design. [Downloadable plans: www.elkinsdiy.com/plans/ ]
Using 4 recycled fluted-plastic campaign signs from a recent election, a $20 secondhand bike, 6 pine boards ($1 at Home Depot), screws, Duct tape and zip ties, he built his latest micro mobile shelter for only $150.
Calling it a “micro Airstream bike camper”, it’s a 60-pound “home away from home”, complete with butane stove, bread-pan sink, counter, food storage shelving, clothes-storage bins, LED lighting, bed, windows, pee jug, bubble insulation, stereo with MP3 player, and a skylight made out of a 1 gallon plastic tub.

When I was homeless, I lived in a little wooden shack built from recycled pallet wood and scrap from a furniture building factory up the road from the camp. It was about the size of this glorious camper and let me tell ya, its not hard to live in a small space! I had a old middle console from a car next to my bed which was a crib mattress with a large couch cushion all zipped up in a old sleeping bag and sewn shut at the top...i had taped three milk crates together long ways to form storage for clothes and a old coffee table for my "kitchen " I used a of corrugated metal i hammered nails through to make holes..then i placed that on the Cinder block in the middle of the table with a tuna can filled with rolled cardboard covered in recycled wax to make a burner...i used a little toy stock pan to make coffee and tea and a little cast iron skillet to make food. These were hung on the wall after being washed and the cabinet on the coffee table was food storage as was one of the open ends. I kept the one by my door open though as that would be where I stored my shoes. I loved my little " hobbit house" and everyone that came to the camp was amazed how a big lug like me could live so comfortably in such a tiny space. Honestly, I miss that little hut a lot! It was the first place I truly felt was home

@@IAMGWH1 it is definitely a humbling experience, and it taught me just how strong I really could be, resourceful as well. I spent 2 years in that little shake, in a camp that became home, with camp mates that became family. We were a village on the fringe of society that survived on our wits and spite lol. Thank you for your blessing!

I wish the majority of homeless were like this tho, in my area a homeless person would not be willing to do the things you did, they rely on charity and never themselves in any way whatsoever. And the few who ARE willing to be creative get punished by nosy Karens because they feel like the very sight of a shelter attached to a bike mares the image of a geographic location.

@@SteveVon7 I was lucky because there was a set of 4 homeless camps where I lived, so we kept each other safe and worked together like a little village. Everyone was proud of their little hut, or sheltered tent. It wasn't much, but it was ours and it was home. Our camp even built a outdoor shower hut! We had a camp kitchen....we had a storage tent with supplies to help out not just people in our camp but the other camps too....we all worked together to help each other. A program was in done to shut the camps down because of a new bridge being built..the first thing people would see coming into the city would have been us. The mayor didn't want that so a program was done. Now for the record, everyone involved tried really hard to make it work. But, in the end out of 60 people, 5 died....and 57 ended up back on the streets..this time with no camps to help...the main issue was everyone was expected to enter a already strained workforce. Some of the people I was in camp with hadn't worked in 10+ years, were battling addiction, battling mental health issues, and were thrown face first into trying to deal with all of that and thrive. Of course it failed! No assistance was given for those issues. And so.....the city destroyed the area known as Tent City because it looked bad on the city. They didn't really care about the survival of the residents that called it home. Everyone involved with the failed program was fired...and those that tried so hard to make it work...it was all for nothing. I left the city and moved on and am doing fine...but I will always wonder about the others

When I was homeless I would have died for one of those. Part of being homeless is that everywhere expects you to move along. With one of these I could have slept in so many places without repeating locations more than once a month or so.

I've worked in the large format printing industry for 18 years and my advice to anyone interested in making one of these, contact your local large format printer and ask them if they have any scraps. Unfortunately the industry is very very wasteful and there are often many odd shaped drop pieces that too often end up in the dumpster because they are difficult to recycle properly. You can score all kinds of amazing materials by just asking. Coroplast, acrylic, canvas, vinyl ect. It never hurts to ask. Also I've gone to foam manufacturers to score their drops as well when I was working on a costume project. They often have tons scrap pieces they will gladly let you have.

Cover the trailer in flexable solar panels and tow it across the country with an electric bike. With 500watts of solar power one could travel all day on a sunny day off the solar power alone as it would take no more then 300 watts to cruise at 15 mph and the remainder go towards charging the battery for those times when it's not so sunny lol.

It’s great that you need the space for the things that make you happy, no one is saying they’re against that, especially me. I’m all for people living there lives the way they see fit. Most people, however, are stuck in the corporate grind and miss the opportunities laid out before them because they have to pay for all of those things you mentioned - it’s a trap. When you live with less, you become free. It’s what some people would call “the new rich.”

Great idea! To clarify for those in the comments section: The US defines "homeless" as even those who live with others in a home they don't own. Most people put down "Homeless" when writing up tax forms and/or benefits forms to be able to claim said benefits. They're not truly homeless. This leaves a question of how many people are truly homeless, as in sleeping out in the streets every night.

Its a great idea for some people, for some situations, for some geographic locations. Wretch Gunk I’m not suggesting that gas is superior. I’m speaking solely from the perspective of being in a homeless situation, living near small towns or the far outskirts of a big city. In that particular situation, I’d MUCH rather have a moped & utilize gasoline over solar power. I could easily make the money for the moped/gas through raking leaves, shoveling snow, mowing grass, scrapping metal, etc etc.

William Bonney That unfortunately is not what the government want's....They've done everything to add to the issues of the homeless: from harassment, jail, no restroom facilities, to shutting down those trying to feed them. In addition to licensing panhandling , cutting back on funding for programs, causing many to end up with records which often affects getting work, and on,and on.... Then there's the working poor, often living in dangerous environments because they can't afford the constant increases in the cost of living, why ? Because our wages and benefits never kept pace....Then there's the fact that every company given money to stay leaves anyway and keep the money. Then there's the fact that despite moral and criminalistic behavior....wall street got their bonuses anyway. California has even taken some of the shelter's built for the homeless.. This epidemic is could be corrected but, the monetary gain isn't in rebuilding its in war.

Next challenge: make the entire bike/caravan into a single unit, like a motorhome but without the motor - a cyclehome, if you will - such that you are traveling within an aerodynamic and weather protected cabin. It could reduce the overall length and remove one of the wheels decreasing weight and rolling resistance.

So cool! I'd seen this before, when we lived in a house. Now, two years into full-time RV living, it was well worth watching again. Mr. Elkins did an outstanding job of turning inexpensive materials, and even removing materials from the trash stream (kudos!), into a viable mobile living setup. The travel days would be somewhat slow, but it can go pretty much anywhere. We're about the opposite end of the mobile spectrum, with a total rig length of 63 feet, something like 15 tons, and needing to worry about overhead clearances. Many RV campgrounds aren't even able to accommodate us. On the other hand, we have all the comforts that cannot fit in such a small, lightweight platform. I hope that he's still out there, building things like that and living the good life. Also, thank you Kirsten for making this video. As usual, you did a great job of presenting the story, and not intruding.

I did an 880 mile bike ride many years ago and camped overnight in safe places by the woods. Wouldn't you know it, my final night I slept one foot away from a fire ant hill. I woke up and put my right foot directly on them as I began dressing for my last 175 mile day. Those ants covered my foot and ankle, and put a big chomp, all at once... My foot swelled so I could not wear my riding shoe, I wore my flip flop for the first 50 miles. At 10 a.m I put my riding shoe back on and completed my ride by 4 p.m. I intended to ride from the west coast of the USA to the east coast the next year but life happened. I sure could be used one of these bike campers in those days. Great!

Better than having to regularly spray with Armor All or other such (808?) like I should do with my Royalex canoe. But overall, it doesn't look like to sturdiest construction. Although very clever and probably comfortable, safer wouldn't be an attribute of this camper. Homeless people often congregate in areas of high crime and violence. Getting into this thing to attack and Rob the sleeping occupant would be as easy as opening a paper bag.

I think it's hilarious and what better use of campaign signs. Love the designs. Our Dad made the back of his truck bed in the 70s, benches w/ cushions that made into a bed for camping. Tool storage otherwise.

+Nathan Hovey and it would offer some stability. It's a neat setup but a strong wind would likely push it right over. would add some eye-rings to the frame for staking it down during windy night camping.

  • @GodismyJudge47

+Nathan Hovey Yes. Also it would have a lot of wind resistance and would carry a good amount of momentum going around turns for just a bike. But if the wheels, like you said, were on the outside it would have the kind of bulldog effect as does the Mini Cooper.

+Nathan Hovey If you think about the frames structure, the wider the structure the less weight it will be able to support. So having a small frame that is more sturdy would support his weight better. In the long run it increases its durability.

Madison they ARE called draft animals for a reason you dummy. you obviously know zero about horses, some LOVE to race, some are great trail ponies, some don't like being ridden but will happily pull a cart. they ARE "big puppies" (Native American translation) who partner up with us HUMANS the same way a pup will do, and DO appreciate the care and attention they receive from their owner/master, you dolt.

+mhachtma it's completely unfounded. coroplast is pretty inert. the most you have to worry about is inhaling fine dust while cutting, that is to say, it's a safe material. this depends on who you trust, of course. I trust the coroplast material safety data sheet.
