65. Yelvertoft to The Ashby Canal - Part Five - Marston Junction to Market Bosworth

On a rather dull day, I leave the Coventry Canal and join the Ashby Canal at Marston Junction but better weather is ahead. After a short cruising day, I moor up on the southern outskirts of Hinckley. The following morning, I wake to a glorious sunny day and make my way to Market Bosworth, where I walk into town for supplies.

Hi, I live in Pensacola, Florida USA. I have been watching videos of narrowboats for about three years. My wife & I came to the UK last November and rented a narrowboat from the Ashby Boat Company for 11 days. Julian Carlyle and Kevin were great, and took care of all our needs. We had a great vacation and are planing to buy narrowboat when we retire in a couple of years, The Ashby Canal was beautiful even in November and we had great weather too.

Thank you. I spent many hours as a kid up and around Sutton Cheney wharf fishing. Back then there was only a gravel car and a footpath to the battle site. Always go back there for a walk around when I`m back in the UK.

Got stuck at Marston junction once whilst BW kindly pulled out a washing machine that some kind person had chosen to dump in the cut there. Then proceeded to get quite sunburnt despite wearing a hat and realised that the sun reflection on the water can burn you as much as direct sun. Happy days, lovely canal

boater bill - an interesting memory - it’s quite unbelievable what gets chucked in the canal. I was working on a CRT boat on the Coventry and we pulled out two very heavy reclining armchairs. I think they could only have been there a day or so, as no rust whatsoever on the mechanisms. Definitely need to take precautions in the sun these days. Cheers

@@MyNarrowboatVenture I suppose it might be hard for some. On our last trip a lady suggested taking a bus from Radford Bank to the centre of Stafford. We walked it easily. We love walking, it was about 2 miles each way. It's nice to walk when you have been stood at the tiller for a few hours.

I fully understand the lack of space on a narrowboat but I have often wondered why you couldn't find enough space for a bicycle. It seems like a bike and backpack (rucksack) would have been great to use for your provisions.

  • @MyNarrowboatVenture

Hi Russ. Interesting you mention that, I don’t have space for a full size bike. I gave my last bike to a charity to refurbish and sell on. I’ve been toying with the idea of a folding bike possibly electric but cost is prohibitive. Still thinking about it.

Hi Susan. Initial thoughts on N Oxford same as you, it was difficult to moor up and not overly picturesque. It was though very grey when I was on it and I think I felt better about it on my return when the sun was out. That said I still prefer the S Oxford.

On my RYA course I was told to sound horn for 4 seconds when approaching bends etc in case there are other boats that’s you can’t see coming towards you. Does this not actually happen in the real world?

ipb1966 - I use my horn but it’s rare I hear a horn. So yes the horn is used but everyone’s judgement, as to when to use it is different. Cheers
