406. Narrowboat Journey - "Unlucky Lockies" - Part One
This is the first part of my new cruising series. I start my journey at Crick on the Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal heading south towards Norton Junction. I pass through Crick Tunnel and then head for Watford Staircase Locks where the weather takes a turn for the worse and the volunteers get soaked. Their help in seeing me down through the locks is much appreciated.

How sweet. You helped guide the birds through the tunnel with your light.😊

@MyNarrowboatVenture your welcome. I wonder if they got wet. Great videos, as usal. I enjoy all the natural sounds and seeing all types of weather. No, you surely don't want to be slipping on your boat. Happy Midsommer Solstice.

@@kaysridgedell2358Thank you Kay, I think the birds would have got wet. And to you, take care 🤠
Thanks Alan, for taking us along on the beginning of your new adventure but it was a shame about the rain. Well done to the Lockies and in particular to Alan who helped you through the locks. By the way Alan your sandwich looked very tasty but I've never heard of that particular cheese before, it sounds like a hybrid, lol. I hope that you are doing well and that you have a great and sunny week. Take care and all the best. Stevie

Hi Steve, many thanks for your comment, hope you’re keeping well. It was an awful start to my cruise and I felt sorry for the lockies. Cambozola is quite a popular cheese, one of the blue vein varieties. I don’t like strong cheese but this fits the bill quite well and worth a try. All the best, have a good week.
Hello Alan, so glad you are out on another adventure. Look forward to seeing your travels. Glad you have plenty bread and cheese with you. Cheers.

Hi Dave and Glenda, it was great to meet you too, always pleased to say hello to viewers. Today, ‘Willow’ passed us, on the far side of Garstang, I think it may have been on test, as the helmsman said on seeing us ‘one of ours’. Best wishes to you, Alan and Sally.

Hi Rufus. One set of gates in particular leaks badly. Sometimes the gates don’t quite shut right against each other, which will make them appear to leak worse than they do. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 🤠

Hi Bob, thanks, glad you enjoyed watching. All the best, take care.
Hi Alan, goodness what weather to encounter on your first summer outing! Horrendous for any volunteer or boater as it can be slippery underfoot with whatever you are doing!! You must have been one of the lucky ones when volunteering at Watford in the past with the weather!! Always used to freak me out going through a tunnel in case i came across a bat!! Enjoy the summer ahead. Xxx

Hi Lynette, I’ve had awful weather at Watford Locks, perhaps it seems less bad when you’re in it, rather than looking at it. I’ve not been aware of anything flying in the tunnels until this trip. I hope you and Lester have a lovely summer, it’s slowly coming! xx
Have a lovely weekend looks like a warm one at last 😊😊

Nice to see you out cruising Alan. June has been a bizarre month for weather...roll on summer - whenever that will be!! 😂 Just for clarification, as I hear this from several boat tubers and I'm sure you're aware, but 'double' locks are completely different to 'broad' or 'wide' locks which is what Buckby Locks are. Double locks are where there are two single locks side-by-side as at Hilmorton or Heartbreak Hill (T&M) Look forward to seeing the rest of your cruise. ❤

Hi Jan and Tony. I had a lovely cruise thanks and I feel summer is slowly coming. When I refer to locks I will say double width lock or double lock, as I believe that is easily understood in terms of narrowboats and the general public. Although Hillmorton are 'double' locks, that's not a term I would use, as to my mind it's not clear, I would say twin locks, some may say paired. It's like the term bi-monthly, when that's used I don't know what is meant, is that twice a month or every two months! We also have to consider when using terminology, that different audiences across the world, may have different interpretations or not be familiar with our terms and sayings. Ain't easy is it? All the best, take care.

Great vlog as usual Alan looking forward to your travels, The one thing I wanted to know without being thick is why can't the boats pass each other in the pounds which would keep them moving and save water although the day you went down the flight you had a little bit more water than you wanted, take care. 😊
@MyNarrowboatVenture
20 күн бұрын
Thanks Robert. Boats can pass in the two lower pounds but can’t come up until the staircase flight is clear. One boat can wait in the second pound up (but it’s not easy to turn to moor up) and two boats can wait in the first pound. All the best.
Alan thank you for taking us along on another adventure. We don’t often get to cruise with the canopy up, a different experience. Hope you and Sally have a wonderful summer
@MyNarrowboatVenture

Hi Ginger. I often have the canopy up in winter, but then I’m not always filming. I’m fortunate in that the canopy will fit beneath my local bridges. Sally and I have some special cruises planned, thank you for your good wishes🤠

Hallo Alan. Nice to see you on a new adventure. Seemingly at the begining of the video there were 2 boaters with Covid...something at my age that i am frightened of..I´m 73 y/o. In our life time Covid will never get rotted out.

Thanks Roger, as you say Covid is still about and probably always will be. If you get it, the advice is to stay at home and avoid contact with others. All the best, take care.
Hi Alan, another great vlog. Question - what is the number 513294 on your boat? Is it your CRT 'registration number'? I have noticed that some boats have them, but most do not. Also, when a boat is named, can you have a name that already exists?
@geobolt8788
20 күн бұрын
My understanding is that the number is the CRT registration number and is required to be visible. I think the name of the boat can be the same as other boats.
@MyNarrowboatVenture
20 күн бұрын
Thank you Alan. Yes, it’s my registration number. All boats are required to display their registration number, and I would say most do. They are not required to display a name though. And yes, you can have boats with the same name.
@terenceseymour-tf8rptassie725

What purpose is their in having the boat number displayed? With cars the vehicle registration plate helps with identifying the vehicle if running a red light or going on a toll road that would not seem a need on the Canals. In Australia we have car registration plates but no longer have window stickers as vehicles can be identified digitally probably boat ids could be same?
@MyNarrowboatVenture
19 күн бұрын
Hi Terence, I actually think you’ve answered your own question. We no longer have tax discs in car windows, as cars are checked digitally from their number plate. Boats need a registration plate as well, as it’s the only way to identify the owner and check whether it’s licensed. It’s no different to cars. There are Canal and River Trust rangers that check licences and ensure boats haven’t over stayed on their mooring. That can only be done through the registration plate. Hope that explains, cheers.
Hi alan do you live in the marina full time? Because on there website it says leisure moorings only.
@MyNarrowboatVenture

That’s right it’s not a residential marina, I’m high usage, so spend time there; cruising the cut; and out and about.
