618: Commencement Controversy & Racial Reconciliation with Latasha Morrison

Kansas City Chiefs Kicker, Harrison Butker, recently gave a controversial commencement address at Benedictine College where he drew on some popular conservative talking points about Pride Month, Covid 19 policies, and the calling of women in the home. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss the problems they had with the speech, as well as their frustrations with some of the criticism of the speech, and how Butker's views seem to have been influenced more by conservative politics than the historic Catholic position on these issues. Then, Kaitlyn sits down with Latasha Morrison to talk about her new book, "Brown Faces, White Spaces." They discuss the importance of understanding historical context to grasp the roots and impacts of systemic racism, and practical ways that churches and individuals can engage in the work of racial reconciliation. Plus, a megachurch in Texas tried to manipulate a traffic study for a stop light, and Phil thinks he has proof that News of the Butt is the best part of the podcast.

News of the butt reminds of the “Humor Sunday” we had in our church growing up. That humor and humility share a common root is not an accident - it is harder to become self-righteous and place yourself on a pedestal if you engage in a little bit of (tasteful) silliness from time to time.

Conservative ideas and those who propose conservatism have put these ideas out of reach? Currently the inflation we are experiencing is under a very liberal progressive senate and president . @@hgservices5572conservative standards like resistance to paid family leave, resistance to sick leave (if you’ve ever had kids you know), refusal to assist with medical costs (having a baby is expensive), preventing unions from effectively negotiating fair wages, working hours, etc… It’s easy to have a single income family if you make enough money, but median incomes are stagnant while the cost of living (especially in housing) has skyrocketed. Corporate profits are exploding but the people that work there see none of that money. The most frustrating part about Butker's speech was that he was hired specifically to do a commencement speech, which he barely did and gave whatever it was he did instead. Like, repeating political talking points for 20 minutes is not a commencement speech, a commencement speech is about honoring the school and the students and congratulating them and wishing them well on their futures.

There is only one lane in true Christianity. The love of God. Christianity is the expression of the love of God in the earth. For God so loved the world. It is incredibly wide. It is the truth that makes you free. It is also very straight. Very restrictive. It demands that you love God with your all. And treat your neighbor with compassion and kindness. And without it everything you do is nothing.

@HolyPost , I watched the entire speech, the sped up way (Thank the YT developers). What was concerning about his speech seemed to be his references to the TLM and how "staying in your lane" and getting closer to God and salvation by explicitly following the Priests and going to TLM would give him salvation. I found an article from 2019 that described how the cultural and ideological outcomes that he was spouting seem to be from the TLM. Anyway any additional thoughts from those that have been to seminary would be an interesting discussion. I'll get back in my lane now.

Best interview (from my perspective) in a long time. Morrison's Bridge effort is wonderful but I'm afraid the bulk of the US is too bigoted to hear the message. My guess is that her participants were already leaning towards reconciliation but were held back by the overwhelming flood of Republican pushback via CRT, DEI, etc. The Left has failed to make a coherent effort to understand the roots and mechanisms of systemic racism. And there is certainly no effort to bring the message to the public. Indeed, in my quasi-liberal state of Minnesota, I’m ashamed to say that the Democrats have all but disowned the issue of systemic racism, even when it directly impacts education. The only readily available narrative for the George Floyd uprising comes from the Right. A significant enabler of racism is Confederate theology: an emphasis on literalism and personal responsibility that disowns Jesus' central message of Love Your Neighbor. Her effort to set the record straight is on-target. It's a difficult path but I see no alternative. Kudos!

@rodkuehn8157 Your post reflects your opinion that there is some kind of conspiracy based on the outward appearance of others. That’s systematic-racism. While there may be a correlation of experience between identity groups, that is not causation. The reality is, people have so much more power over the outcomes in their life. There have never been more choices and opportunities to every human being, no matter the “race”. The idea that there is a conspiracy against people of color is absurd. There are cultural norms all over the globe. Chinese people are not executives in Japan. It’s just the way it is. Japanese people are not executives in China. It has nothing to do with systematic racism. It’s cultural norms. And cultural norms are fine. Calling things systematic racism when it’s just cultural norms weaponizea the normal. Why do that? Because you feel like you or another group is suffering because they don’t fit in? People don’t fit in to may places on the planet. It is not the responsibility of others to accommodate others perception that they are discriminated against. Instead of blaming others for their perceived lack of opportunity, the way forward is to make your own opportunity. Take ownership. The freedom of movement on 2024 is exponentially greater today than in 1600’s. Instead of complaining about the way things are, go live your life. Move to Japan, China, Australia, Germany, Iran. People have the freedom to choose. Just go do it. There is no collective guilt. Systematic racism is only a statistical correlation and if people don’t realize it’s not causation, they will forever seek entitlement. No one is entitled. Listen to the most credible person to walk the planet. Viktor Frankl. No collective guilt.

@@hgservices5572the Holy Post is not particularly bold either, to be honest, and often what they’re saying is not particularly new either. This is part of what I appreciate about Pope Francis, even if I disagree with him on some things - he actually does have spicy hot takes, and he attempts to back them up with good reasoning. He does not say nearly as many boring things as one might expect for an organization infamous for being stuck in the past.

The response from the host to the Butker speach tries to condemn and justify him and his ideas. To do so they have to ignore every bit of social, historical, and societal context and the harm these ideas have done in the past as well as the rhetoric from leaders today on what they are wanting and willing to do to create these constraints on women and families if they get power. Its a very important context do to the political culture on the right, what those right wing politicians who believe these things have promised as well as the context with his link to the Latin Mass movement. A movement claimed to be white Christian nationalist in its intent. So many christians read the bible without context, so why expect them to look at the context in this.

@rjthomas7091 they did justify them. They have little choice as it is part of evangelical Christian doctrine. They also obviously deviate from that so can't fully endorse. It was a very have cake and eat it too response. Aa to traditional wife thing. You say it's there were conversations of people calling it slavery. By many measures "traditional wife" is slavery. The man is entitled to the woman's labor in the home. Her freedom is restricted and controlled by the husband. Are there relationships like this that work out? Sure. There are also many that are exploiting and abusive. In these relationships most property are own by the man. Access to money is at his control. Transportation is at his control. It traps women. Even without owning anything or being paid the wife is expected to provide child care and maid services with the only compensation being room and board. How does this not sound like slavery?

It’s my belief that you would have preferred they spend the whole time deconstructing his caveman like speech. To that I’d say there’s a part of me who wishes the same thing..at the same time it’s worth pointing out both that “trad-wife” and “parenthood is slavery” are wrong responses and that anyone can live a meaningful life as a stay at home parent(if you have the means) or as a working single person, both have value

@rjthomas7091 What does missed opportunity mean to you in this context? They absolutely do justify and criticize Butker's ideas in the same discussion. They pretty much have to. The trad wife ideology is part of evangelicalism, which they are a part of. To fully condemn it would go against a longstanding evangelical belief. They can't fully support it as Kaitlyn defies those ideas. Do I wish they would just tear his argument apart? Not really. I know what I am listening to. They are very right wing. Not extremist, but still far to the right. I don't expect them to he otherwise. They do come across as liberal by comparison to the right currently. I point out where they are very right wing so that any who read my comments don't miss it and can judge for themselves. It isnt about what I would like. It's just about what is.

@rjthomas7091 The thing about slogans is they are designed to convey an idea, but are almost always bad when interacted with ny those not already on the side of the slogan makers. Is parenthood slavery? Of course many would say no. We are told to see it as an honor or obligation. That isn't what the slogan is about. A woman in a relationship where she has no authority, no money, no property, no life, except what the man allows, working in the home and caring for the man and children. A life of unpaid labor and servitude with little opportunity for escape if the relationship turns bad. This looks very much like slavery. We are taught that it's OK because she is a wife and mother though. It's her natural place. That's pretty much what Butker claimed. That the woman's natural place was as for breading and homemaking. We said the same about black people in slavery too. That it was their natural place to ne in servitude. This slogan isn't for those that choose the life of homemakers and benefit from it. It's about the idea that this is the natural place for all women.

Phil thinks telling him to kick is the same as telling a black man to kust dribble. Sure, on the surface these 2 comments seem equal. This again is ignoring the contexts. Black men, not that ling ago, were subject to numerous attacks, indignities, and expressions of racism. They were often exploited as entertainers and mocked by other entertainers for whites pleasure. As far as we have come we really are not that far in time, ethics, social acceptance, political acceptance from those days. We still have politicians working to overturn all the rights for them that were fought for and authorities still kill and imprison them with seeing any punishment. An athlete at the top of his game calling out how harm is being committed against others with little justice for those harmed. Butker is none of that. He is of he majority demographic. From a successful family. From privlege. His current life, as an athlete at the top of his game, is one of privilege that affords his wife the ability to have a life most others, even if they want too, could not have in this economy and capitalist culture. Butker isnt speaking on harm being done to others. He is promoting ideologies that have been shown to cause great harm in thebpast and present. Ideas that if implemented today, with out a extreme liberal shift politically, would cause great harm to families and the economy. Context matters christians. Without it you only have manipulation. Perhaps thats why the bible is read without context and promoted as a faultless ptoduct of God himself. The 2 situations are not the same. I also doubt he is endangering his career with this speech as any person of melonated skin tone does when they speak up. I believe a certain football player is still blacklisted for respectfully taking a knee. It isnt the same.

I think you said a lot there but at its core it’s an ad hominem response… saying that to lebron does have racial undertones though given the history of audiences loving top black athletes performance but not liking them questioning how our society is organized. The best response generally and in this circumstance(in my opinion) is to challenge what as said and explain why… not call for him to be fired or say “shut up and kick”

@rjthomas7091 my response is not adhominem. My arguments are not directed at the individuals themselves. They are addressing the context of those giving the argument in general. Not the individuals themselves. I get it. We are supposed to ignore context when discussing controversial ideas. We are told to just discuss the merits of what was said as if nothing else matters. Why do you think that is? Context should matter. It brings a lot of nuance and information to the discussion. Why are we culturally encouraged to ignore context especially on ideas of minority in equality? You can not separate the person from their life experience. In these 2 cases cultural and lived context matters. It has informed their view on the world likely more than hard data has. It is especially evident in the responses from people about there comments. Ignoring context ensures no discussion will ever be resolved. Nothing changes. Our beliefs can be better manipulated.

@@JohnThomas-ut3go sorry I didn’t mean to say your response is ad hominem..I’m saying that fundamentally what you’re advocating for is still ad hominem even with the context. I still agree with your analysis that Phil creating that parallel is off. I’m just adding on to that by saying that still as a general practice we shouldn’t use our first response to say “they’re with X group” particularly when the audience we’re trying to convince is uneducated or doesn’t have the same contextual understanding we have. I’m saying context matters so much to the point that we have to consider if we’re trying to increase our chances of changing minds or standing up in such a way that nothing is likely to change and it’s my believe that ad hominem is unlikely to work to convince someone who doesn’t already agree.

@rjthomas7091 I can understand what point you're making. I just don't believe in people's ability to understand most arguments nor place things in context. To get past people's bias you have to handle a conversation so carefully. I know I don't have that level of skill, and I don't think most people do. With that view such ad hominem arguments as people telling them to 'just kick' is as effective as most arguments the majority could make. I also believe that by now many discussions have already been had and decided. Women's place in society should be considered one of those. At least as far as the archaic idea women should ne only homemakers is concerned. Having the idea settled such arguments need not be politely entertained. No more than arguments of slavery or segrigation. If we politely give these ideas space to ge debated it gives credibility to their position as if it isnt really settled.

The criticism of lack of genuine theology from the right comes into play here with this comment. Jesus never set out to hurt anyone's feelings. His words were always firm, but understanding. Did he hurt feelings? Yes, cuz they didn't want to hear it. Not cuz he ever said anything genuinely harmful. So ur comment literally talking down to fellow Christians and non- Christians alike. While hinting that their is no need for kindness when ur leading someone to righteousness is anti-Jesus to the very way he expects us to live.

There is a quote often attributed to John Wayne that says, "Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.” And life is a lot tougher yet when your idea of what it means to be “tough” is to be stupid. Like in the stupid way that the harder any man tries to appear tough on the outside, the more weak he truly is on the inside. In other words, a stupid man tries to “build a wall”, so to speak, of appearing tough to others, behind which he hides his weakness in his own little internal “safe space”. As if other people can’t easily see through his superficial performance as a caricature of an insecure adolescent boy’s idea of “toughness”. Naturally, people like hgservices5572 are too shallow and superficial to notice or understand this dynamic. Which is also shallow and superficial enough to try to substitute joining a lame Tik-Tok trend for having an actual personality of their own. (Not to mention trying to substitute the same lame Tik-Tok trend for actual theology.) And the problem with all of this, to people like hgservices5572, is that it edges too close to the truth. Because we cannot be going around hurting self-important, hedonistic, mealy-mouthed people like hgservices5572’s feelings with truths they’re too simpleminded to understand. Because ego and stuff.
