For the Japanese sunscreens water resistant labeling, they recently updated so that water resistant sunscreens will have a one star and two star label on them. One star for 40 mins amd two star for 80mins. Its fairly recent so there's a transition period where all Japanese water resistant sunscreens would need to update the packaging so itll take a few years to see it more often but the reformulated Skin Aqua UV Gel has the 2 stars label for water resistant.

yea but trust me bro Kose Perfect line dont need no labeling. The resistance proves itself as it completely turns my face into a lotus leaf cuz my sweat be ROLLING off my face onto my meal smhhhhhh. also NO single cleanse can strip this japanese dude off my face. ONLY OIL BASED DOUBLE CLEANSE.
Several derms have recommended the Biore one. At least one scientist has said for folks concerned about the reefs, to wear mineral/inorganic sunscreens and UPF clothing/swimwear. And Lab Muffin has done myth busting videos on the whole reef safe sunscreen issue.

Yup I think UPF rash guards are probably the best option (in conjunction with sunscreen), with a nice added bonus of slowing down how quickly we plow through body sunscreen lol
So excited! There’s such a lack of water resistant sunscreen discussion among Asian beauty enthusiasts in the west. I’ve always been kinda skeptical of the water resistance claims on J-beauty sunscreens because of the different regulations, (Japan didn’t regulate those claims until basically this year and newer sunscreens following the old labeling rules can be sold until 2027) so I really appreciate the test!

Im still looking into it but it seems that most Korean/Japanese regulations on water resistance testing is on par with other places but just the determination of the 40min/80mim retention and labeling is what's different. For example, to have the 40min/80min label, the spf must retained at least 50% of the labeled protection at those intervals. Its the same 50% retention rule for European water resistant sunscreens as well. Australia and maybe the US are the ones that SPF must stay the same as the labeled spf after 40min, 80 min, etc to get the label. Its hard Im guessing to find the info because of language maybe since most of us arent fluent in Korean/Japanese to read up on all this. I could be wrong still but thats what Im interpreting based on what I found.
A couple other things. The Style and Beauty Doctor channel checked the Kose sunscreen. She said it worked for her deeper skin tone but she also liked it under makeup. Lab Muffin and Glow by Ramon (cosmetic formulator) have both said people need to stop with the UV cameras. It can only show that you have sunscreen on and not the SPF level.

Thank you for the info! I hate the UV cameras, and moreso the companies behind them. Predatory nonsense that I do not think was well-intentioned on the brands behalf. They offered me a free one in exchange for a review (ugh) and it made me realize they were capitalizing on the Purito scandal. Target the influencers, pass that worry along to customers to convince them to buy an utterly useless product that tells us NOTHING. (I’m still mad lol)
Yes! Finally someone is finally doing reviews for waterproof/resistance asian sunscreen!! Thank you!! I have been a fan of the Kose Suncut, they do come in larger tubes fragrance free. Was hoping there would be more kbeauty options as they use less alocohol and fragrance. But can't wait to try the A+ option. Thx so much for going beyond to do the pool test!! You are the BEST! I’m a gardener in hot & humid TN, so water-resistant is a must! Saving this video, and taking notes from the very helpful comments, for future reference.
My HG top tier fave specifically for my face is “Every Sun Day” The orange package waterproof from DrJart. I have no plans to stray away although I do look out always something with EXTREME water resistance. The SunCut essence was my HG before discovering SunDay but the shin, dry.. Plastic looking finish wasn’t my cup of tea so I will be giving the milk a try for my face. I came back here today for body SPF! So was happy to hear you mention it almost immediately lol.. It’s funny because when considering recommendations for face VS body what I look for is very different. So rewatching the video with those preferences in mind was the plan. Body I dont have to be so picky. However I have tried somewhere around 100+ SPF’s that are water resistant, majority K/J beauty for my face. Biggest thing that narrows in my list is Dimethicone. Breaks me out on contact basically. So finding Sun Day has been the highlight of the decade or me. I like it better than any of the options with dimethicone I used before finding it to be the culprit. While it can be pricey and the bottle is absurdly TINY, the pros blow those facts out of the water. I work outdoors in an active role so I am constantly sweating. Add in the fact that I live in the city of Humid- I mean Houston, “seat resistant” has to be as waterproof as it gets. I wouldn’t say my HG Sun Day has the highest adherence I’ve ever used, but it is just so easy, layerable until the end, gorgeous finish always without doubt, no pilling, nothing left in the hair or brows, no stinging of my eyes when I am sweating excessively into my eyes and everywhere else, and water resistant WITHOUT DIMETHICONE WOW... so despite the size and price I love it more than any of the other 10000000000+ sun screens I’ve tried. However due to the small size in combination with it not being as readily available as it used too 😢(praying it’s not being discontinued) I EXCLUSIVLEY use this on my face and front of my neck. I have a decent stockpile VIA Amazon but they all have the same batch number as my trusted bottles from SV/YS despite being purchased many months later.. SO that doesnt ease my fears of it being discontinued. It also raises concerns of them being dupes. I buy with skepticism outside of the trusted K/J beauty sites so I plan to compare next to my already opened bottle I know is legit. The boxes/bottles are identical so hopefully the formula is too. Anyway… I will be trying out your A+ since it looks like no Dimethicone !!!!! Amazing. And maybe try the others here I haven’t yet for my body. Thank you!!!
You are very welcome, Alice and I'm so glad you like the Face republic sunscreen! 🤩 I too consider it to be only 'sweat resistant' due to lack of official rating, however given the price and ease of application, I won't hesitate to use it any day, even when I plan a bicycle trip on a sunny day ☺

It feels like they have the water resistant market! 😁
Love the dedication !! The SkinAqua super moisture milk is my favourite since it’s alcohol free, fragrance free and oil free !! (My acne prone skin cannot tolerate oils unfortunately) It almost feels bulletproof since my oil doesn’t break down the formula throughout the day and it’s a greaaattt base for makeup bc of the dimethicony feel, definitely worth trying out :)) Also, why the lack of water-resistant sunscreen in Korea 🥲 as a Korean-Canadian who’s been there during the summer, it gets HOT, I feel like if they just tried they would kill it

EU Nivea was my HG for face, but they keep increasing the prices so buying Asian Niveas from time to time to bump my order for free delivery is now more affordable for me. My favourite for the body is still the German Nivea lotion...the smell is intoxicatingly nostalgic.
Pale skin here. 3 days out in the Caribbean beach and sun. I put on the Missha Waterproof and reapplied with the Abib Waterproof sun stick every 2 hours and didn't get a single sun burn or tan.
Face republic is my favorite of the water resistant sunscreens. It smells lightly of pine to me, but no irritation. My runner up is Kiss Me Mommy UV Aqua Milk SPF50 4+. For some reason, everything from Kose and Biore pills on me.

I cannot believe how nice the face republic one is! It’s another I haven’t heard much about, but what a find 😍
Today I'm wearing the Haruharu wonder Black Rice all mineral sunscreen, which makes water bead up, so it seems a bit water-resistant. It is astringent, though--6 hours in, my face is a little tight, not like w/ the Black Rice Moisturizing Airyfit. But it does seem more water/sweat resistant! Thank you so much for posting complete ingredients lists in these reviews, it's very helpful. Same for the fragrance notes--strong baby powder is a no go for me (ISDIN Eryfotona is as strong as I can take with that powder vibe). I avoid octinoxate due to smell, so these J-beauty picks will be passes for me!
@AliceintheRabbitHole
11 ай бұрын
I’ve felt that with a few sunscreens as well! My guess is that we may find some amount of unlabeled water resistance in sunscreens simply due to it not being tested (but also not being formulated for that purpose). So not entirely reliable, but …helpful in cases of sweaty emergencies 🤣
I was JUST in the market for a non-glowy sunscreen and was about to place an order with YesStyle for the TirTir ceramic ampule and another mini History of Whoo set because I'm addicted to them and Sulwhasoo at this point lol. Went to look at the reviews for the Kose sunblock and the top review was a familiar and beloved face! 😂 (It was Alice lol) Anyway, I think I may hold off the TirTir after watching your video- but I got the HoW set and the Nivea matte sunscreen gel. Question for you, Alice: you've talked before about K-Beauty sunscreens being usually easier to remove at night- sometimes not even requiring a double cleanse. (I don't wear makeup at all during Summer, btw). I was wondering if those cleansing tips also applied to the J-Beauty sunscreens, particularly the Nivea one? (I've probably mentioned this before but I almost stopped wearing sunscreen for a time before committing to Korean screens, simply because having to double cleanse 7 nights a week, esp. with a wash cloth, was kinda ruining my skin.) So the instructions on this Nivea gel- which is waterproof, after all- say that it can be removed with "soap and water"....? Is that so? If so, do you do use an oil cleanser as well first? Basically, I'm asking how do you cleanse your face after wearing this one? Thanks in advance!
the face republic one was perfect for me, but i discovered the skin on my face can't take niacinamide everyday so eventually i got a bad burn with it. Most people won't get a burn, though. It really is a good sunscreen, and I use it on my body without any problems. It is so easy to apply.
@barbievale

The bad burn was from a reaction, not a sun burn, btw xD

Thank you so much for sharing! That helps a lot to hear about the comparison to skin1004 as I’m quite familiar with that one haha. @amyamy8177
11 ай бұрын
@@AliceintheRabbitHole You are abselutely right about the protection being different. Essentially it's because spf 50+ could be spf 60 or 100. But also UVA can also cause a burn and the main difference between spf 50+'s are the uva protection. With uvmune as an example they use a patented filter that protects from extra long uva that others filters don't and that is part of how they can increase the uva protection. Overall different filters protect from different wavelenghts and the combination of filters as well as the formulation can result in very diffent levels of protection within the spf 50+ range. If you want extra high spf then look into PPD, UVA_PF and reviews in extreme conditions. For the 50+ ++++ label it means a ppd (uva protection) of sixteen but if it's above 16 you won't know because you can only get 4 pluses with that system. The uvmune gel cream has a PPD of 30 (their fluid is higher ppd but i hate it because it's super greasy). UVA-pf is similar to ppd but in vitro (i belive the test involve applying sunscreen to glass and measuring how much uva comes through it). The problem with uva-pf is obviously it's not done on people and with ppd there is a big difference with how quickly people tan + i don't know is there are certain wavelenghts people tan more at (no idea if anyone has even looked into that). I belive australia have the strictest regulations for sunscreen. I was gonna doubblecheck the info in my comment since it's been a while since i looked into this so please take it with a grain of salt but the take away is: sunscreen testing is super dificult and if you think one sunscreen protects better than another with despite the two of them having the same label then you are probably right!
I really like the sound of the Koze one, thank you! Added to my Yes Style Wishlist :D Have you tried the CosRX Aloe 54.2 Aqua Tone Up Sunscreen spf50? I think it's new? Also I love your swim hat! Can I ask where it's from?

I have been using Japanese beauty and skincare for many years having lived in Japan and visiting there often now, while Korean beauty is more new today and personally I think KBeauty is way better. Japanese sunscreens are always full of alcohol, whenever I visit Japan, I can read Japanese and so always read the ingredients and I have a very hard time finding an alcohol free one. The ones I do find are always white and greasy. The Kiss Me mommy one is probably the only alcohol free Japanese sunscreen I like. The rest I have all have alcohol
A super strong scent can drive me crazy ❌️⭕️

Wow, I think Face Republic started in The Philippines. The owner as well as the manufacturer (if I remember it right it's Kolmar) are Koreans.
Alice, you did a great job of getting in the pool and testing whether the sunscreens are waterproof. I think I've tried so many sunscreens and I don't know why my face developed an allergic reaction to chemical sunscreens and I've already spent quite a bit of money trying the ones that claim to be for sensitive skin and I've had bad experiences because in the end my face is so irritated, that I have to use my cicaplast to recover my face, and in Chile it is very difficult to find mineral protectors, the truth is almost impossible. There is only one of Avene and it is horrible, it is greasy and very dark. I'm going to try the Haruharu Wonder ore. Do you have any recommendations for sunscreens that you feel comfortable with, because I have dry skin and I'm worried that it will dry out my skin even more... Have a great day Alice 😘
@AliceintheRabbitHole
11 ай бұрын
Hmm, do you think your allergy could be to specific filters? I originally thought I couldn’t use chemical filters at ALL, but my issue was that I can’t use US chemical sunscreens because of the UVA filters they use (avo- and oxy- benzone). It turns out that I seem to be all right with all the rest of the filters, including those used most commonly in J/K beauty! If it helps further, those two seem to be more likely to trigger a reaction for a larger number of people so..it’s a good place to start with the process of elimination!

I wonder what the process is for asian beauty brands to enter yesstyle. Ive never heard of the brand Face Republic, nor have I heard korean beauty youtubers mention it! But its a korean brand? Very interesting

Yep! I saw a few other items from the brand on YS, and I admit I’m tempted to try them. It’s certainly a brand I haven’t heard much about, but I do so love those hidden gems lol
There is a difference between water-resistant barely for sweating and for 80 mins and the truly water-resistant hydrophobic ingredients that are for sports and beach stuff. Therefore, not all of the aforementioned sunscreens are for both uses. Mind that.
😆 I thought you did a pool test on a new sunscreen called "Frog Rescue." 🐸 🤣

Thank you, hope you have a great weekend too! 🥰
Also, how do you reapply sunscreen over makeup without using a beauty blender?

I just use my hands! Or a sun stick, though those are better for less sun exposure; like heading to the grocery store in the evening haha

It actually doesn’t, but I sometimes think that might have more to do with my skin type. I dry out through the day more and more lol; that might influence it?

@@AliceintheRabbitHole ahhhh
The Biore smells so strongly of alcohol, I don’t know how it became so popular! I bought it the first time at the Tokyo airport during a layover and thought I must have gotten a bad batch because the scent was like putting disinfectant on my face. I bought it again a couple of years later during a trip to Tokyo and had the same issue.

Will you try the isehan kiss me mommy Uv aqua milk? Says it’s waterproof and alcohol free

omggg yess i need more people to discover the Suncut UV Perfect Milk by Kosé. It has a good finish on my skin almost matte looking but not drying for me. I’m out a lot during the summer and I sweat like crazy but the sunscreen doesn’t make me look shiny and oily 🥹And it’s also really cheap omg one bottle costs $11 canadian on stylevana 🤸🏻♀️ i recently bought 3 more bottles bcs i love it so so so much
