@@chaeneesahpretty good comparison lol. beauty of joseon is like stray kids and beplain or something is like oh my girl lol. both korean technically but one is more popular internationally and one is more popular in korea but not as well known outside of it. tbf, there's a big chase for "products that are actually most popular in korea" and that's not wrong or anything, but I do find people kind of forget themselves and lose sight of what really makes the difference with kbeauty, which is the quality and technology behind it, not just how popular something is.

As a Korean who watches both American and Korean beauty youtube channels, I can say with confidence that Ive never heard any Korean makeup/skincare influencer even mention the brand Beauty of Joseon. My first Korean sunscreen was the Beauty of Joseon (loved it), but I have to agree with you, I love the SKIN1004 even more! The pump is a bit annoying because I can’t get a full fingertip length from one pump. I can’t wait to try the others you have recommended 💞✨

  • @mandywong1408

    @mandywong1408

I used to dislike the pump until I figured out how much pressure to apply in order to get the finger length. I also tap downward on the cap (a handful of times) to ensure that any air bubbles gets out of the bottle before using the pump. I noticed that the pump design actually helps the user to use the entire product without having to cut it open.

Interestingly, I have oily skin but I prefer the Beauty of Joseon much more than the Centella one. I loooove the BoJ, but the Centella was very "meh" for me, not sure why, hehe. I guess I have an emotional attachment with the BoJ as this was the first sunscreen that blowed my mind, hehe. But also, I prefer the squeeze tube, and it is more moisturizing. Although I have oily skin, I use tretinoin, and I find the BoJ does more for my skin.

100% agree regarding these sunscreens! BOJ and Round lab do appear quite similar, although the feel on the skin is decently different. I personally love the lighter, more deeply hydrating feel of the Round lab spf, as opposed to the more almost whipped, creamy texture of BOJ. Both are very similar but I feel BOJ feels slightly heavier. Skin1004 is also super amazing; completely agree about the pump system. A tipped applicator is just so much better as you can easily control the amount you want. I feel with skin1004 pump, I just get whatever random amount I try to meticulously pump out 😂 The isntree spf is also way too dewy for me and the spf smell always puts me off. Subbed!!

I am (very) new to skincare and heard about the Skin 1004 sunscreen a little while ago and decided to try it. It is the first time I’ve ever gone through an entire tube of sunscreen probably in my life. I do like multitasking though and so I don’t always use this. I sometimes mix it as well, I know I know people hate that but I do it anyway, with a Mychelle tinted sunscreen.

I’m glad you found a way to enjoy applying these sunscreens! I just wanted to say that concerns about directly mixing sunscreens stems from the fact that formulations are very specific to ensure that their active ingredients will properly protect the skin; by mixing two sunscreens with each other (assuming you’re mixing before applying to the face), you can disturb the formulation such that you actually lower the given SPF. If it still performs well, it might be a better idea to layer the two, by applying the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen first, letting that layer dry, and then going on top with a layer of the tinted sunscreen.

Love the hat! Being new to K beauty skincare, I was trigger happy and ordered a bunch of sunscreens. Each sunscreen has a slightly different texture and consistency and the pumps dont help. The 2 finger method did not seem reliable anymore. I now have a dedicated 1/4tsp for measuring sunscreen. Heard good thing about numbuzin no1 sunscreen. Since starting K beauty I find that I don't have dry skin but had dehydrated skin. With that resolved BOJ is too dewy for now. The haru haru sunscreen feels less dewy.

Skin1004 is perfect for the hotter months in Italy (here it's incredibly humid and temps usually hit 40+ Celsius degrees around midday), while I really like the BoJ for the colder and windier months. Truth be told these were my first two K Beauty sunscreens, but I've tried many more after and I keep going back to them! However, I agree that this Round Lab sunscreen is expensive AF, so I tend to buy it when it's on sale. If I can't get it, I typically gravitate towards the Instree sunscreen or Skin 1004 (the latter being the cheapest option in Stylevana). I find many Korean sunscreens to be the same, despite the difference in price especially the Round Lab one, which is more expensive for a KBeauty sunscreen. I do prefer Japanese ones in particular Anessa, Biore and Allie due to how strong, water resistant and long lasting they are, but Korean ones I use for cloudy days and winter, because they are nice being alcohol free. But for sun and holidays, I always go for European or Japanese ones, as the Korean ones aren't strong enough for me for strong sun, personally.

Hi, Alice! Lovely to see you as always. I agree with you about BoJ. For my dehydrated-yet-runs-sweaty face, it's kind of the worst of both worlds: it goes on too thick for my liking AND yet somehow also "shrivels up" during the day and leaves my face feeling parched by mid-afternoon. That Isntree formula (why is it still using those old filters?) is WAY too greasy, leaving me looking like an oil slick and sliding around until it ends up assaulting my eyeballs. Of that bunch, I'd say the Round Lab is the best, but it's twice as much as what I expect to pay while only being marginally better. I've said it before and I'll say it again because Goodal deserves the press they aren't getting: their Heartleaf Calming Moisture Sun Cream is the end of the line for me (the organic one, not the "other" one). Numbuzin has a #1 sunscreen now that looks promising, but there's really no need to try it with Goodal around.

I also prefer the Skin1004 over the BOJ. I like the pump because I know it takes 6-7 pumps for me to get the spf I need vs. measuring it out. There are so many others I like better than BOJ. Isntree Hyaluronic Watery Sun Gel is the best under matte foundations to bring the glow back if you find a foundation too matte. On its own, I don’t wear it because it’s too glowy (but not greasy). It literally gives you glass skin. But I LOVE it for the purpose of pairing under makeup. Currently, Numbuzin No.1 Clear Filter Sun Essence is my favorite though. 🏆

I'm one of those skincare junkies lol that's obsessed with trying different toners and serums but when it comes to spf, I'm staying with what works for me. The Paula's Choice Resist Super Light Wrinkle Defense spf 30. No stinging, no peeling, no white cast, works with other products plus I can use my regular moisturizer underneath with no issues it's perfect. I wish it was a higher spf but it doesn't get hot where I live. It's pretty much been mid-high 60's all summer lol If it hits over 70, everyone is dying lmao but it does get pretty humid here.

Have to say- not a huge fan of the original kolmar 4 filter base formula (BOJ, Round Lab) for my dry skin during low humidity times as it dries out my skin for some reason? I understand the hype around it as its very cosmeticallt elegant, and i love using them on my body LOL its super comfy and gives some skincare benefits! Love the isntree sun gel - thats the one ill put on if im lazy in the morning and dont do anything besides apply sunscreen due to the antioxidants and barrier health ingredients in it. Not a fan of mineral sunscreens either so ill take your word on the Torriden LOL! The newer kolmar base thats been going around - haruharu wonder yellow tube sunscreen, p.calm water barrier, abib sedum protection tube- seems to work out better for my skin, and i cannot wait to try them out during the winter as it is hard to find an adequately moisturizing spf thats not crazy greasy! i

There are many products that come from the same factory, but not always so similar in the ingredients profile. I think keeping the same safe formula playbook makes sense because of how challenging it is to formulate SPF period. If you have newer filters like Tinosorb S, etc. interacting well together… don't innovate, fine tune… maybe. I have worked with a large amount of images of models in bucket hats. Ooh asking the hard questions lol! If you want to be a dietitian, I do think it can be a fulfilling path. One thing I would stress is that there will be limitations depending on where you are stationed. For example, if you work at a hospital, it’s a great, stable position - and phew is that ever nice in this world! However, I’ve heard from dietitians that it can get a bit monotonous. I was adjacent to RDNs on the research path, and I can say that of my peers: one did quit, one worked for a while and then started her own yoga studio (but was glad she got the degree), and one is still happily employed. So I guess I’d ultimately recommend talking to those who are doing the kind of work you’re interested in, especially in your area. It’s cliche, but it will help you get an idea of if that’s what you want to go for!

Fortunately there are plenty of other choices for me-- The Skin1004 Madagascar Centella water-fit sun serum is ideal for me. I also like IUNIK Calming Daily, Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisturizing Airy-fit, Thank you Farmer Sun Project Sun Relief Cream. Common denominator seems to be Centella asiatica. I've been hesitant to try the Round Labs one in case I'm allergic to birch juice. But I may need to try it for the dry winter months. • @AliceintheRabbitHole

Ingredients that increase the efficacy of the sunscreen itself! Sometimes, it refers to antioxidants (although I kind of disagree with this perspective, though I get the theory: it’s not adding sun protection, but it may help reduce the effects of free radicals). More commonly, it’s referring to unlabeled filters. Butyloctyl salicylate is an example here, as it acts very similarly to octisalate, but isn’t considered to be a sunscreen filter. Thus adding it to a zinc sunscreen gives a “boost” to the final SPF/PA values. Hope that helps!

You know how they say the best sunscreen is the one you'll use? Although I feel some sunscreens are better than others, and I avoid glow-up sunscreens, I feel the best Korean sunscreen is the one you just bought bought... or have.... or the closest, the one you left in your car (w/o massive heat) or pocket,, the one with the newest gimmick, the one that you found for 80% off, the one with the pretty bottle, whatever,

Absolutely!! And the reality is that there are so many good options these days, especially in AB Now, if we accidentally step in a time warp and end up in 2003…yikes. Then it might be hard to find a good sunscreen. 👀

Beside the point, but do we know how Korean sunscreens are able to sell on US amazon as sunscreen with SPF ratings? I’m all for it, but I worry an FDA crackdown could make things harder for all of us😅

An individual in the US is allowed to buy from abroad for personal use only since sunscreens are classified as cosmetics (rather than medication) in other countries.

I think another sister to those three is haru haru wonder chemical sunscreen. Feels very similar to birch juice sunscreen but a bit more hydrating for me. It's very gentle so I use it around my eyes where the skin is irritated from rubbing oil cleanser to remove mascara. I'm still looking for a sunscreen that doesn't make me look as you say reflective. The only one so far is Biore aqua rich essence but that has a white cast and with reapplication I start to look like a statue 😢

To be honest, if I compare BoJ products with other popular products in Korea, BoJ is not that exiting. There are similar or better ones in my opinion. And I heard they were fined because they used word Ginseng in their products, while they were using cultivated Ginseng and it's called Insam or something like that

Skin1004's Hyalu Cica sunscreen is the only one I'll use. I hate how sunscreens feel as a rule and I almost never go out in the sun as it is and even when I DO go out I am covered head to toe (sun visor, huge shades, protective clothing) so that I finally found a sunscreen I don't quite HATE is a miracle. Thanks for the reviews! Note: I've never been the type to use sunscreen in lieu of moisturizer. I always use it on top of all my other skincare so the lighter application and the more dewy it leaves my skin, the happier I am! My skin type is drier, mature skin so I am a huge fan of layering multiple hydrating products in addition to any actives I'm using.

That’s so great to hear! It’s the same for me in that I much prefer to pair moisturizer with my sunscreen. I need the moisture lol
