The scene were the fish got stuck on toads face was a deleted scene in the movie,but it was shown in the trailer.
I think the reason why Toad smiled after tripping on himself was because he was excited to find out Mario didn't die on Rainbow road. Plus, he was obviously shipping Mario and Peach and looked happy to see them reunite.

There's an Easter egg in the Mario movie that no one noticed. In the part where Mario trys to get in the castle,the guards say: were sorry, but peach is in another castle. That is a reference to the first game when you beat Bowser then you save toad (I think so) who says:thanks for saving me but peach is in another castle!
