    This was a GREAT video. Never knew what the difference was I just had some leftover from toolboxes I bought at pawn shops. Now I’m looking to get a complete set from Ace on sale. I looked up the difference between 6 & 12 point socket, your video popped up! Appreciate the very informative information about sockets. I can pick out what I need for my DIY projects.

    For fasteners that are 6 point with today's high tooth count ratchets, there's almost no reason to not use 6 point sockets. The 12 point sockets were awesome when you only had 36 teeth on your ratchet and a tight area. I still have a bunch of 12 point sockets but try not to use them unless I have to.

    Even with low tooth counts...... Why is everyone in such a hurry? Grab it and twist it if it doesn't go on. What percent of fasteners are at the angle that is bad for six point in a tight space? One percent of bolts twisted by a mechanic.

    I'm guessing you don't work on many vehicles. Not everything is wide open to do that. In fact most fasteners are not that easy to access. If all your doing is changing wheels then ya go ahead. But most times if it's accessible then I'm using an impact and if it's not I'm using a ratchet

    There are also Spline Drive sockets that are not compatible with both metric and SAE, but rather the tolerances are made for specific sizes just like normal sockets. Also there is such thing as a spline drive fastener which is best serviced by spline drive sockets. As for torque I use exclusively 12pt at work because in aviation the hardware is about 50/50 6pt to 12pt. I have put over 300 ft lbs on a 6pt bolt with a 12pt socket (1-7/16") with no problem. As long as the hardware is clean and corrosion free it is no problem at all. Of course the hardware in helicopters is kept a lot cleaner than in cars though.

    Great topic Tony, im a big fan of 12 point sockets they really are old school. I remember when side terminal batteries first came out GM used 12 point 5/16 fasteners. My job had a good size chipper that used 1/2 inch bolts with a 1/2 inch 12 point head to change the blades. Yeah they can wear out. I found i can break a 6 point socket quicker than i can wear out a 12 point but i would say smaller sizes 6 point fit n work better. So i have sets of both. And i will ad that if someone has used vicegrips or a pipe wrench its can be hard to get a 6 point socket on said nut or bolt especially larger sizes. Im looking for a 1/4 inch drive 12 point metric socket set i have two sae sets. Thanks Tony.

    Martin Schaffmeir very nice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I know what you mean about getting the socket on in tighter spots. Also I know kobalt and gearwrench and a few others have 1/4 drive 12 pt socket sets. But it depends on if you want a full set with a ratchet or if your just looking for a rail of sockets. But I suppose both have both sets.

    Great video Tony. I am a somewhat advanced diy guy and I detest 12 point sockets. The only time I have ever came across a 12 point bolt was on a big block chevy connecting rod. I you have ever done any serious wrenching then you know how easy it is to round off a 6 point fastener with a 12 point socket. Of course you should use a 12 point socket on a 12 point fastener but most automotive fasteners are 6 point. Most of the mechanics too sets available in the box stores are LOADED with 12 point sockets. This is why I chose Gearwrench for my socket sets, all 6 points and way less chance of rounding off a fastener.

    Whenever feasible I use 6pt sockets and wrenches. Ratcheting wrenches have made this more workable. Obviously on non ratcheting combination wrenches this can be an issue if space is an issue. But if I have to break a fastener loose, 6pt whenever possible. As a backyard guy though, I rarely encounter 12pt with fasteners. Recently I only had a deep 12pt 14mm and ended up stripping the fastener with the help of an 18” 3/8 drive ratchet. Both of those things have since been resolved.

Its because you no longer need the 12pts. ! OK, I sapose lightning could strike and one day you may need one, but if you do, you probably already know of that specific fastener. The only time I have ever needed and and used a 12 point socket is where I need clearance. The thinner wall on the socket helps to get into tight places. My son had a BMW and couldn't get a 10mm 6 point socket into the cover to remove the nuts. A 12 point slipped right in. Working on my KIA Soul to replace AC motor needed to remove gas pedal. Regular 6 point 12mm socket would not fit on one nut. Not enough clearance. 12 point slipped right on in.

    My 6point socket had a hard time trying to remove a badly stuck 6point bolt. It kept slipping off and was slightly rounding off the bolt head each time it slipped off. which got me worried. The bolt in question had a thin bolt head thickness abt 2/3mm which made it hard to keep the socket on. So I think the 12 point and in particular a 12point wrench would have been perfect to break loose the stuck bolt. btw manual transmission drain bolt in Mitsubishi. So I think the 12point has its strength in breaking loose such difficult bolts. * Finally I had to use a torch before it broke loose.

    I've got a good set of chrome sockets in both 6 and 12 point, but I don't own any impact sockets yet. I'm looking to buy some impacts- should I get the 6 points? My thinking is that most 12-point fasteners I see will be in places that I wouldn't want to hammer on it too hard with an impact wrench. If nothing else, a breaker bar should get things moving. Or should I just get the 12-point set and be done with it? On thing I thought about doing is getting deep 6 points and shallow 12 points that way I have both deep and shallow and 6 and 12. Thoughts?

    I think either way is fine and it's good to know your thinking about these things. That's very important. I think 6 point would be just fine if your ok with doing a few 12 points with chrome. Unless you think you will run into alot of 12 point fasteners other then that I think you would be ok with just 6 point impact and worst case scenario you end up just getting a cheap 12 point impact later if need be. It is so when working in confined spaces you can get the wrench on the fastener easier. It's a pain working with 6 point wrenches in a tight space trying to get it on the fastener. 12 point can still handle a lot of torque. Unless you're constantly putting extension bars on your wrenches, then in most cases, you don't have to worry.

    You can always look into the sets from them they are great also for both 1/4 and 3/8 metric and saw and shallow and deep sockets is like 125. Then for 1/2 you could just do impact sockets. Plus the 125 you spend on the other 2 sets. Gets you money off towards your impact sockets.

    12pt makes more sense with wrenches than sockets (because you only have to be able to rotate them half as much to undo the fastner), but even then, provided the fastner's not seized or in poor condition. I've seen torque tests with large fastners where both the 6pt & the 12pt snap the bolt before rounding it, but I've also seen torque tests with partially rounded smaller fastners where the 6pts performed better. If the chamfer is a little smaller on the 12pt near the corners, that would definately be a bonus when it comes to shallow head bolts, but I'm not sure it is.

    What is your opinion on some of the cheaper chinese-made sockets a from Craftsman or husky from home Depot. Vs more expensive tool truck brands? In my line of work I'm in and out of a lot of shops during the week and I'm seeing a lot of younger mechanics purchasing quite a few of us a husky or craftsman or kobalt and they're not having any issues at all being used quite frequently. It seems like Chinese steel is very strong and tool quality is very functional. Other than the chrome quality finish they seem to do quite well.

    Generally, with impact wrenches and drivers you want 6 points on a 6 point fastener. As far as what's better to have around the house and shop...it depends. Over time, you'll find that they'll all be useful at some point. Bang for the buck, one of those kits that has both deep and shallow, metric 8-18mm, and sae 1/4-3/4" will suit you well for the most part. Make sure they dont skip sizes. Then you can add to it when you don't have the size you need for a project.

    12 points engage every 30 degrees and 6 points engage every 60 degrees. Making it twice as easy to engage. I primarily use 6 point sockets but just like having metric and standard , short and deeps, I also keep 6 points and 12 points arranged separately. Very rarely do I require a 12 point (Peterbilt starter comes to mind) but they come in handy as just an extra socket. In the beginning you were talking about the sockets being rounded to ease getting it on the nut. Is that what they call chamfering ? I just heard that term used somewhere the other day.

    Oh now that's a tricky one lol. I still have to go with the science though. As long as the 6 point isn't so cheap that it doesn't fit the fastener then the 6 point should be less likely to round a fastener then a 12 point just bc of the surface area covered on the fastener. Even though it is snap on and has a good fit. Unless it's a 12 fastener or a fastener hard to get to I wouldn't use a 12 point on a fastener that is so tight that it could possibly round it.

    Where the heck did they ever get the idea of a hexagon shape section for bolts and nuts when, from my opinion (in terms of using the most out of the strength due to lower contact pressure) would've been a square section. Let's just think. My theory is that the contact surface on a square head bolt will be lower than for a hex type, hence the square type will ultimately have a much less tendency to have the corners slip under force.

  • @TonyTheTechnician

    @TonyTheTechnician

    2 жыл бұрын

    That is a good point and I completely understand your thought process on that. I believe it may have something to do with ease of access getting tools on thos fasteners easier from multiple different angles. And it became common practice to use 6 point to allow multiple different angles to get on the fastener while still allowing a decent amount of force to be able to be applied to the fastener. Where a square may be extremely difficult to get your tool on in certain situations. But that's just my thoughts. You bring up a good point though. 👍

  • @Maverickf22flyer

    @Maverickf22flyer

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@TonyTheTechnician Exactly as you say I also think that they'got to the standard of hex due to overall ease of access and, like the 12 point sockets allow, give a wider range access angles, as a square may make it impossible for ease of access in many cases. But, on high torque stuff, those who make standards should've let square types to be used though.

  • @clamboni9

    @clamboni9

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, ease of access definitely comes into play, but the lower the amount of points, the larger the point to point diameter of the head of the bolt will be. I think it's more of a balance between getting the best contact area between tool and fastener, and keeping the head of the fastener reasonably small.

You can get the most torque using a deep 6 sided socket on a 6 sided bolt(Best for removing 6 sided bolts. 6 Sided shallow sockets are for low clearance applications. 12 Sided socket on a 12 sided bolt head is for speed applications in a tight space. You can fit a 12 sided socket or spanner in place using less rotation required to move bolt head.
