I've ridden over fifty years without windshield, bags, helmet, etc. On long trips I wore what I had and everything else went in a bedroll on the handlebars. Alas, at age 71 I'm thinking about a windshield for the first time. If yer gonna be dumb, ya gotta be tough... ;-)

My father in law was the same way, the absolute definition of a "Biker", toss a bed roll and tool pouch on the bike and disappear for a few days. In his late 60's he pulled up with a windshield, I pointed at it with a raised eyebrow and he said that he was old enough now for "pussy shit". He's gone now but I keep his pocket watch in my jacket so he still rides with me. When I'm getting tired of being beat up by the wind I'll touch that pocket, smile, and twist the grip.

I'm 65 and never had a windshield on any of my " in the wind" machines. I guess it's like having a convertible and never taking the top down. I run 16 apes with 2" risers on my 92 Dyna wide glide and can still pound out a 400 mile day if I'm running to or from something big. My trick is to use passenger floorboards instead of front pegs. The platform plants my feet and let's me slice the gusts like a OG on a Mann poster....smiling my old face off.

First real time out on my new Softail street bob I did 180 miles and it wasn't horrible. This is after spending about 3 years off a bike. Before I had built up my body and did multiple 24hr 1k mile trips on a S1000rr. 400 miles on this should be a breeze.

I bought that same seat for my Street Bob, but I got the Daddy Long Legs version. It moves the rider back about 2 inches. Makes a HUGE difference. My knees aren't as bent with the mid controls and it's such a comfortable seat to begin with. I also bought a tall sissy bar and have a big bag that I strap on over my passenger seat for more back support. It's a super comfy rig, now. Just working through some engine gremlins now, but I can't wait to go for a long cruise once I get the damn thing running right.

Hell yeah. You don't need a touring bike to tour. I'm 5'11" 260lbs and I rode from Northern Wisconsin to Missouri and back (about 1500 miles) in two days on my Softail Low Rider. I've added a Corbin touring seat, 3" bar risers with a 1" rear set on stock bars, a windshield and a tail bag. Next up is some highway pegs.

Hello, I have a 16 fat boy, with a removable windshield that I cut down to proper height, an Air Hawk seat pad, saddlebags, luggage rack, back pad, and front engine guard that I can put my feet up on. I have factory cruise control. My bike is an awesome cross country cruiser. I can put on 5-600 miles a day pretty easy. The seat pad was a big improvement. I’ve considered going for the glide, or limited, but I prefer the ride from a non rubber mounted softail frame. I like to feel my engine pulse through my body, even at normal speeds. Don’t let it be said that a softail can’t ride cross country, just got have that love of riding. Thanks for the videos.

Very useful video. One comment... To get the saddle bags on your bike, you need to relocate the turn signal lights/tail lights and license plate bracket to the rear of the Street Bob and that can run into extra expense and more than 30 minutes to install. I did like the go cruise and seat recommendation and may purchase those.

Nice video! I just ordered a quick release windshield for my Dyna so I can be more comfortable on the freeway at speeds over 60 mph, our local highway speed is 75 mph and most people do 80 - 85, too fast for long drives with no windshield in my opinion, takes the fun out of riding. Although I love to ride without anything in front of me at 50 mph and under, the windshield that I bought pops off in seconds with no tools which is pretty cool. I also added a 30 inch sissy bar on the back and put bags and a Mexican blanket behind me so I can lay back like I'm in a lounge chair. Without that backrest it's pretty painful on my tailbone after awhile, with that backrest I can ride all day no problem at all. My sissy bar is also a quick release so I can pop that off too for bar hopping. I'm also adding fork wind deflectors, from what I hear they do wonders to keep the buffeting at virtually zero on the freeway. I also upgraded my rear shocks, that didn't make as much of a difference than I was hoping for...

Cool lil tips. One a side note there is no point in putting a lock on the zippers in your saddle bags. All someone needs to do is push a pen or a stick against the zipper and it will open up the bag, the TSA at airports do this all the time when checking bags that have zippers and are locked.

Might I mention that if one does not have the coin for a a new seat, a sissy bar and a bag that is large enough to be used for a backrest is also very useful. It might even allow you to forego a pair of saddle bags depending on how much you need to carry.

I ONLY ride Dynas and with a front/rear suspension upgrade and a SADDLEMAN seat, I ride as far as my spine allows. I wouldn't go any further because of a windshield, bags, or radio. 🇺🇸💪🏍

What are the rear shocks you have on there? They appear to be longer overall length than stock. Do you like the added length?

I wish I could find decent sized saddlebags that didn't require moving the rear lights from the stock position. So far I've only found one saddlebag that is like that, but it was so small that you can barely fit anything in it.

I like your bag solution. I would like to get more details on that. Your bike has a fender mounted license plate bracket, mine has a side mount. Did you make that change or was yours stock that way?

Hi Donald.. yeah, I added the fender mounted plate to add the bags. It's a pretty easy install, and I don't know how I ever rode without those bags.

Thanks Milton. The Derby cover is from Venom imaging. They make custom printed derby covers. They also have a huge database to choose from. I think I paid ~130 shipped.
