NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Who would win? Ryotaro with the knife or me with the world's hardest food? Let's settle this once and for all. We had a blast at Tsukiji market - I'd actually written it off when it moved to Toyosu back in 2018. What I didn't realise was that the outer market (which is the best bit) is still alive and well, and better than ever before. Toyosu is good for the tuna auctions, but not much else. The brand new buildings are shiny and clean, but they lack the atmosphere of Tsukiji's chaotic streets. If you're in Tokyo, make sure to drop by! As I mentioned in the video, we did have help behind the scenes from a guide (a guide who wasn't Ryotaro for once), as we wanted to really get down the alleyways and handle the knives used to prepare the tuna. this brings a tear to my eye. the first and, so far, only time i went to japan was a mere one week split between tokyo and kyoto. however, during my time in tokyo i stayed in a hotel just a walking distance from tsukiji market. we went there a lot and enjoyed numerous sushi places around the area, who offered the freshest, most justice good fish i ever had. we already knew it was getting torn down, after all we visited in 2018, just MONTHS before it had. brings back some of the best memories in my life. now, 4 years later i'm intensively learning the japanese language, as next summer my father has a japan trip for us in store! couldnt be more thankful for having been to tsukiji

Watching this a year later it’s just so surreal to see him handling all this food, with samples and demonstrations. We’ve come such a long way can’t wait till we can get back to normal and enjoy food and markets up close and personal like this again.

I’m half way through this video and just had to stop and say thank you Chris. It’s 4 degrees and raining here in London, I’ve had a shitty day but I’ve found myself smiling and laughing throughout this video. You’ve made my day, keep up the great work!

I hate the taste of alcohol, and had never drunk before, but when we went to a Japanese bar for a work thing, and they served sake. I got plastered. 🤣😭

There's actually a video of someone sharpening a piece of that dried fish into a knife and i believe he even compares it to various other knives hes made out of bizarre items. it looked like it worked out pretty well too.

As a foodie, Tsukiji Market is my number one essential day out when I eventually go to Tokyo. I say day out because I will literally eat about 7 meals and make a day of it.

This video is proabbly my favourite kind of video, it doesn’t feel disconnected, I felt really connected due to it only being you and Ryotaro filming eachother. It’s funny, professional but keeps the connection and old style. Keep it up!!!

This is a must for any foodie going to Tokyo. One of the highlights of my trip. I've never had the luxury of trying whole grilled squid, oysters and scallops before and it was amazing, cheap enough too. Plenty of deserts as well, I got an ice cream and went back for seconds because I went in the summer, it's fantastic! Definitely worth going as its only up the road from the kabuki theatre in Ginza.

Tokyo always leaves surprises... didn't expect Tsukiji still running on the outside.

I was entirely sober after drinking that, but when I was on the train home like 30 minutes later, I really felt it. I wasn't drunk by any stretch of the imagination, of course, but before that I didn't notice any effect at all.

I was legitimately excited to see that someone already added "In 2019, he invented Tea-Sake" to his Wikipedia page. people on the internet sure do work quick.

I love the wood cups that sake stop used. And never have I wanted to be a sashimi prepper more than when I saw the knives they used

I did the tour about one week before you guys were there and it was so busy we could barely stop and look at anything. That said it was still amazing, great food and the specialist snack food shop almost opposite the tea shop you stopped at is also worth checking out. Really enjoying your work and can't wait to be back in Japan after this crazy time is over.

I visited the Tsukiji Market back in 2019. There was a shop there that sold all kinds of knives (big and small) that are used to cut and fillet fish. Eating fresh tuna sashimi in one of the many sidewalk pop-up tables was quite an experience! Next time, I'll try the sake after eating.
