6 MOST OVERRATED Things To Do IN TOKYO 2023! (And Where To Go Instead!)

6 MOST OVERRATED Places In TOKYO ! (And Where To Go Instead!)
That's right! I am going to go over the 6 MOST OVERRATED places in Tokyo, and where you can go instead! Alot of these tourist traps are always advertised as the best thing to do in Tokyo, because it can make the attraction alot of money. Hence the term "tourist trap". But with a little digging, you can find some great alternatives to these spots! Watch along and see which places are overrated and if the alternative looks any better! I hope so!

We are planning a trip to Tokyo this early October. I have watched a few of your videos and really enjoyed them. I like the speed of your delivery, and get-to-the-point style of presentation in the videos. And thanks to this video, we are going to avoid Imperial Palace. It seems like a massive place and most of us aren't a huge fan of gardens anyway. We will instead hit a few temples with gardens but at a much smaller scale. And of course, your Metropolitan Government office for city skyline viewing is an excellent suggestion! Also, we would like to check out Shimokitazawa, which is not talked about much on most tourist websites. Thank you!

This is an excellent video. I m here a few mths out of a year and I feel similar about what you mentioned. TMGB offers a pretty nice view. Free of charge n queues,,they also have a gift shop. Shimokitazawa is interesting to check out . But it's mostly selling old stuff. If there, do try the Taiwan Kitchen n Pizza place. TK offers crispy fried chicken and pork with rice at very reasonable price. Pizza is very good too, esp the crust. But not as cheap. Ramen... Many good shops around but mediocre ones aplenty too. Unless one has the time, totally understand why they would just stick with the tested ones. Nakano... If there, go to the basement for the multi-tiered/flavour ice cream. But eat at the stall. Showa kinen is a beautiful park tho farther away. But combine that with a stop at nearby Tachikawa Station for shopping and food. One gets to experience the local vibe awway from the city. Tokyo has tons to offer off the usual tourist track.

Great list. I live in Shimokitazawa, and we do already get a surprising number of tourists. So it's not a complete secret. But it's still cool and trendy with lots of great restaurants, Live Houses, Bars and used clothing shops. Definitely worth checking out if any of those appeal to you. It's quite close to Tokyo University, so a kot of the crowd is younger college students, out for the day. Many tall buildings have observation floors. For example, Sei Roku Tower in Tsukiji and Roppongi Hills. So there's very little reason to wait in line at the Skytree.

Interesting! I overall agree with your list, thanks for that! Clever! I still find Akihabara and Harajuku are still more conveniently located than Nakano. Well this is kinda strange, as I had exactly the opposite experience on your number 6. The Shinjuku Yokocho was the most obvious tourist trap ever. Terrible food, lots of hidden charges, overcrowded and very bad service. It was the very definition of tourist trap, while I had almost exclusively interesting and wonderful experiences in Golden Gai. Yes they have some bad spots, but they also have quite a lot of immersive and unique bars and the drinks usually have a better quality and cheaper price, than those in Yokocho. Also if you check the average ratings on social media and trip advisors you will find, that the Shinjuku Yokocho has abyssmal ratings all around.

  • @harblife

    @harblife

    Жыл бұрын

So I checked out the Yokocho when it was only open for about 2 weeks. When I went, it was a good time and didn't have to wait for food or anything. I guess I had one of the few good experiences there, as I wouldn't have put it on the list otherwise. I have gotten a few comments about this, and plan on going back there sometime soon to see if it has gotten worse from when I went last. Golden Gai isn't that bad, but I just find it super pricey for what you get. Most yokochos are cheap and a good time -- it appears the new one is just a bad egg. Thanks for your inputs though!

Thank you for your recommendations! I've definitely got a few new things to check out next time I'm in town. I can definitely echo your recommendation for Nakano Broadway. It's so easy to get lost in there for hours. I agree it's definitely a nicer experience than Akihabara overall, though I generally take people to both places. I've always found tons to do and see in both places, even on repeated visits. Though I'm curious as to how much has changed in the past couple of years. Also, Akihabara has Super Potato, which oddly I enjoy primarily as a candy connoisseur. I've been to a lot of candy shops in Japan, but for whatever reason few places stock the weird, small, cheap candies I like best, haha. Why is it so hard to find those orange-flavored Orion candy cigarettes?!

We went to Japan in 2019. Enjoyed the Sky Tree and spent a good few hours there. We couldn’t really afford anything to buy and thought the aquarium was too expensive but we did visit a lovely cafe. We ignored the themed cafe because we didn’t like the character. It was very fun! However, the Tokyo metropolitan Government building was the BIGGEST and most effective tourist hack, right after the JR Pass. We went in the day and returned the same evening for sunset and night lights. It was brilliant and FREE. We did wait in a line but it was quick. If you want to visit a castle, go to Osaka. Another overrated place is the Shibuya crossing. I highly recommend visit cultural centres, completely free and fun! We went to Nara for the day and it was freezing so we had to look for somewhere warm as most of the attractions are outside. We found the cultural centre where they offered free origami, kimono and photos, calligraphy. It was aimed at families especially with young children but we spent 2 hours folding paper and writing our names. The people was amazing and we stayed warm!

+10000 on Inchiran Ramen. It gets so many “5 stars” from foreigners but it’s just so-so. In a country full of great ramen, Ichiran should literally be one of the last ones to check out. Best thing on their menu is the matcha flan. But I will say it’s a good place if you want a 6am bowl of ramen since it’s 24/7. Regarding the Skytree, I totally disagree with what is said in the video. I'm from Germany and for me the 2700¥ is a bargain, because such an attraction would cost at least 30€ here. We went there at 3pm on a weekday and there was no line. The advantage in winter is that it gets dark earlier, we stayed there until 7:30 p.m. and thus had day, sunset and night. The view is phenomenal, no other viewpoint in Tokyo can match it. I even went to the Skytreecafe and paid a perfectly normal price, even though the drinks were served at 450 meters above sea level. In Germany you would pay at least 10€ more for food and drink just because it is an attraction. Believe me the money is more than well invested on a day with good weather conditions. If you book your tickets online, there is even a discount.

Think if someone travels with a family. I would rather go somewhere I can view the skyline for free, rather than pay 100 dollars for a marginally better view.

I've read that the imperial palace opens up after new years, does that mean you can actually see the interior of the walls during that time?

It opens during certain times of the year. I am not sure about New Year's though. You can also book guided tours to walk around the grounds. I didn't mention either in the video though, because the majority of tourists will not look it up beforehand, and think they can walk around the grounds with no prior planning.

I went to the exact Yokocho you recommended. They scammed me with an unmentioned “sitting fee” and the also charged me for an “appetizer” that I didn’t specifically order, they just gave it to me. I thought it was complementary. The appetizer was just less than 10 lotus chips but cost me 700 yen. I got charged 1300 yen for one skewer. Wtf is that. Incredibly bad experience. I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND. They take advantage of non-Japanese speakers.

Ichiran is a great bowl of ramen, not average like he wants people to perceive and make a point for himself, tonkotsu ramen is not super common in Tokyo and it’s many people’s favorite style outside of Japan. Experience is unique too, you do feel isolated and cramped but feeling isolated is not something you get in Tokyo where there’s people everywhere, and besides, it’s just a meal, 20 min there won’t kill anyone. Their problem are the lines, as they’re popular you can get stuck in a line for ramen when there are literally hundreds of other ramen shops in the city, so only going once like he says is fair.

I would agree that going once or if its 5am is ok to get some Ichiran. It's not bad, but I have heard of tourists that will just eat ichiran their entire time.

..you “forgot” to mention that you can book a ticket for Tokyo Skytree conveniently on their web site. This way is cheaper and you can skip the waiting que at the ticket office. Also Skytree is much higher (450m) than Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (150m), so you can see much farther (on a clear day anyway).

Usually I find these lists helpful but I disagree here: 1. The golden gai can be boring and bars exclusive, it’s still way better than any yokocho if you’re going to drink and looking for new experience. (Themed bars, meet English speaking Japanese and expats) - shinjuku yokocho is not only limited but also overpriced and a tourist trap. 2. Ichiran Ramen may not be as great as those authentic small ramen shops, but still great. 3. Akihabara may not be the same as before, but Nakano doesn’t come close. Also Nakano is far from central Tokyo. I’d only go to Nakano if you have a lot of time. 4. Takeshita is great, but yeah crowded. The alternative Shimokitazawa is not bad, has a great Village Vanguard. But it doesn’t come close. 5. The Tokyo sky tree is worth every penny. The price is very affordable when compared to similar attractions around the world. Empire State and Burj Dubai are 10x the price of Skytree. - Sky tree is better though. It’s my favorite no argument there, but I don’t see it as an alternative. 6. Yeah imperial palace is overrated. Here I agree completely. The garden and bridge are nice though, great if got spare time but wouldn’t go out of my way to see it.

You have some good points here, but the biggest thing I am trying to advertise here is there is more to Tokyo than the common tourist hotspots. I don't think any of these places are terrible, just not what they are hyped up to be. But at the end of the day, people will always have differing opinions. However, I respect everyone's opinions (as long as they are constructive) -- like yours.
