The Director of this film (Professor Min) was my film professor in undergraduate back in 2014, he was a chill professor where we got to watch films in the theater room of the library and just had a quick 5 minute discussion about the films. He got to work with some big names for the first time like Ma Dong Seok (Train to Busan, Along With The Gods 2 & 3, Ashfall, Eternals) and Hwang Jung Min (Ode to My Father, The Wailing, The Spy Gone North) who were brand new to the industry. He ended up teaching at a university in LA, in the United States. Great guy, so down-to-earth, final class, we watched this film and we drank soju, celebrated with a potluck and ate many a snack in the theater. He could have done so much more films given the success of this film back in the 2000s, but this was his only major work.

The best thing about this is that Yi Soon Shin actually beat the 300 odd Japanese battle ships with just 13 battle ships of his won. It's historically one of the greatest naval feats and Yi also accomplished way more in the sea. This was just the tip of the iceberg.

Those 13 ships weren't ordinary ships. But turtle ships which looked like massive blimps on the sea outlined with spikes. They also were lower than the japanese warships. This made them impossible to be boarded. They also made use of all naval weaponry. Mobility was done by both manpower and sails, This enabled the turtles to execute even the tightest naval maneuvers. Yi Sun Sin was the greatest Asiatic naval commander of all time 🫡

@@princeajasper well you're not wrong about the "turtle ship" part, but the battle of Myeongnyang (the battle in this movie) was actually before the making of turtle ships. To be more accurate the battle actually took whilst the ships were being made. Only 3-5 of the turtle ships were built as well.

@@iasifnadafvlog No offense but that movie was confusing. (Warning spoilers for the first Back to the Future movie as well as Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) You go back in time and stop your parents from ever meeting and your family photo is slowly losing members because your parents didn't make you or your siblings but you still exist just slowly disappearing. This doesn't make sense as there's no reason for you to slowly disappear as you should just stop existing entirely. Also If Marty didn't exist then there wouldn't be anyone to stop his parents from meeting one another. Which means they would get together and Marty would be born. Marty would then proceed to go back in time and ruin his parents meeting. This would cause a paradox since his parents didn't get together he should cease to exist. If Marty didn't... Well you get it. Also also In the new timeline, Marty stops his parents from meeting how they originally met and still has the memories of his old timeline like when his father telling him how he and his mom met. Does that mean that timeline still exist? Marty freaks out when he realized that he just screwed up his birth and makes it so his parents actually fall for each other while also unintentionally making his father stand up to his bully (of whom will become his future abusive boss). Marty makes a comment that his father had never stood up to Bill before which confirms that he still remembers the original timeline. When he returns he was surprised to see a different present day where his family lives a better life. This means, from the day he was born to going to the past, he doesn't have any memories of the new timeline even though definitely exist. If Marty remembers the original timeline that means it actually existed even though it should have no longer existed. That means the Marty we follow throughout the franchise is the Marty from the original timeline. The question is what happened to the Marty born in the new timeline? The one who's been living with his parents in the new timeline, did he disappear? They couldn't be the same Marty as they should've have had same memories and yet the og Marty was still surprised about the timeline implying he doesn't have those memories. This is just covering the first movie, it gets WAY more complicated in the second and the third movie. I like the movie but it definitely had the most confusing time travel story. I prefer movies like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban where the original timeline still goes on, they don't change it but it was necessary for them to do so as another version of them did the same things they did in order to preserve their timeline. It's all nothing but a loop, no branching paths, no alternate timelines and no changing the already established past, present & future.

Yi did have turtle ships before the legendary Battle of Myeongnyang, but his predecessor Won Gyu (who took Yi's place as the naval commander after Yi was sacked due to court politics) lost them all near Busan in the Battle of Chilchonryang. Unlike in Myeongnyang, Won Gyu was only outnumbered 4 to 1 instead of 10 to 1 like Yi was in Myeongnyang. However, Won Gyu lost 90% of his ships during the battle (188 ships) and was also killed. And yes, there were turtle ships in that battle. Won Gyu still lost though. It goes on to show that Admiral Yi wasn't undefeated just because of his ships and cannons. He was undefeated because he was a damn good admiral that knew how to exploit his enemy's weaknesses while utilizing his navy's strengths.

When they attacked the US in Pearl Harbor, they were not ready for the modern, high tech planes we had. They knew their planes were so bad they just told pilots to Kamikaze when they knew they were going down or wouldn't be able to win the fight.

Long past are the days when military men fought for honor. This is mainly due to WW1 and 2, which were the first ‘modern’ wars, where honor and nobility stopped mattering, and it starting coming down down who had the best gun and were good at using them. Then nukes completely threw the whole concept of war upside down. Nowadays it’s better to avoid war at all costs to avoid another Hiroshima… But then again I say that in spite of the efforts of the Ukrainian military in the Russo-Ukraine war, so thankfully there are still some true patriots in this world

Original for this concept was the japanese movie "G.i. Samurai" from 1979 and another from 2005 "Samurai Commando Mission 1549" with a great opening scene. For me the best one was the 2006 Live Action TV JDrama series with just 2 episodes but each had a length of a movie called "Sengoku Jieitai: Sekigahara no Tatakai" and I love how both the movies and TV series involved soldiers time travelling along with their only helicopter, APC, Main Battle Tank, Military issued Toyota Jeeps, and Dirt Bikes in the warring states period of samurai due to a natural/scientific phenomenon unlike fantasy/magic with the Anime Gate. Now Gate is a great new take on the concept in medieval setting for a change but with fantasy and anime form and am here still waiting on season 3 :D. However there is another anime more realistic than "Gate" id more recommend but is so underrated called "Zipang" from 2004 with modern weaponry like the JSDF Mirai Destroyer time traveling to WW2! Now Imagine "what if" the japanese had a destroyer capable of launching nukes before hiroshima and nagasaki ever happened? There is a similar story to this also and its an american live action hollywood movie called "The Final Countdown" from 1980 with the USS Nimitz Aircraft Carrier sent thru time before Pearl Harbor happened! These titles are all so underrated and needs to be known but there is no shortage for this fun concept ^_^

There's also a similar themed manga (edit: I scrolled down the comments and found the name, Zipang - which also had both manga and anime), and at least one manhwa with similar plotline also but I forgot the titles (been reading so much comics nowadays). Just gotta Google them titles or plotlines (time traveling army/military novels/comics/movies). Have fun!

Im happy people are catching up on this again but while gate has been great as an anime... id recommended a good live action tv series with the same premise of being transported in time due to a scientific phenomenon with soldiers but also along with their helicopter, APC, Main Battle Tank, and Military Jeep sent into japan's warring state period! The TV series is "Sengoku Jieitai: Sekigahara no Tatakai" from 2006! Good luck finding where to watch it online tho! There is the original "G.i. Samurai" 1979 japanese movie and "Samurai Commando Mission 1549" movie from 2005 for your time travel modern military appetite but id advise the 2006 TV series! :D

@ERRATAS 0202 China won the war, but only because Joseon persevered long enough for the Chinese to intervene. Even before China joined the war, Joseon had won a number of key victories to keep itself alive (Siege of Jinju, Battle of Uiryeong, the rather successful guerilla campaign of Korean militias, and the failure to secure southwestern Joseon by Japan). Also, if you're claiming that the Battle of Myeongnyang was a fabrication... I suggest you look at the Japanese sources. Even they admit that Admiral Yi completely whipped them during the battle and there isn't any evidence to suggest that Yi's records of the battle were fabricated. Heck, he actually gave conservative estimates in his personal entries.
