Backyard gardening contributes to environmental conservation because you can reduce food miles by consuming locally and reduce greenhouse gases by practicing good composting methods. Starting Eggplants from Seeds: The first step in growing eggplants is to start them from seeds. Eggplants can be started indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Start by filling seed starting trays with a good quality seed starting mix. Sow the eggplant seeds about ¼ to 1 inch deep in the soil, and water them well. Keep the soil moist but not too wet, and maintain a temperature of about 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit. When gardening in drought, substitute small seed starting trays with large seedling containers for better performance. You can let your eggplant seedlings grow for 3 to 4 more weeks before transplanting when you use big seedling containers. Gardening during drought means your plants will have to survive through high heat, water stress, and strong winds.

Once the eggplant seeds have germinated prepare your potting mix. Eggplants prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They also like to be kept moist but not too wet. Water your eggplants deeply once a week or whenever the soil feels dry to the touch. Eggplant Pests and Diseases: Eggplants can be prone to a number of pests and diseases, including flea beetles, aphids, spider mites, and powdery mildew. To prevent these problems, it's important to practice good garden hygiene. Keep the area around your eggplants free of debris, and remove any diseased leaves or fruits as soon as you notice them. You can also use organic pest control methods such as neem oil or insecticidal soap to control pests. What are the best companion plants for eggplants? Companion Plants for Eggplants: Companion planting is the practice of planting different crops together in a way that benefits both plants. There are several plants that make good companions for eggplants, including marigolds, basil, and beans. Marigolds can help to repel pests, while basil can enhance the flavor of the eggplants. Pruning Eggplants: How to prune eggplants-Pruning eggplants can help to promote bushier growth and a larger yield. To prune your eggplants, pinch off the top of the main stem when the plant is about 12-18 inches tall. This will encourage the plant to branch out and produce more fruit. You can also remove any side shoots that develop below the first set of flowers. Fertilizing Eggplants: How to fertilize Eggplants- Eggplants are heavy feeders, and they require regular fertilization to grow strong and healthy. You can use a balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Apply the fertilizer every 4-6 weeks, starting about a month after transplanting your seedlings.

Growing Eggplants in Containers: If you don't have a lot of space in your garden, you can still grow eggplants in containers. Choose a large container with good drainage, and fill it with a high-quality potting mix. Be sure to keep the soil moist but not too wet, and fertilize the plants regularly. You can also prune your container-grown eggplants to keep them from getting too large.

Enjoyed this. Enjoyed your tip on dealing with dry soil in particular. We grow the Burpees "Black Beauty" every year. We have grown ichiban before but usually just the black beauty. It is very reliable where we live. Oh, were the onion starts bunching or will you separate them for bulbs?
