    My dad used to roast (chinese) eggplant over the fire until the skins were charred, remove the flesh in shreds and toss them with sweet onions, diced tomatoes and scallions. Then he'd make a dressing of soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, a pinch of sugar (optional), a little sesame oil and an optional tiny splash of fish sauce. It was delicious and my siblings and I would happily eat eggplant made in this way.

    I like to boil, mash and season eggplant and add it to ground beef. It takes on the taste of the meat and is a good way to sneak vegetables into my families diet. It also stretches my food budget. I can freeze it too. Sadly, this was the first year my eggplants didn't grow and produce. I suspect a late freeze killed the seeds.

    I direct sowed black beauty eggplant seeds at the beginning of March this year and after 85-90 days I harvested my first eggplants. 3 plants gave me 6 eggplants of 5-6" in size and still producing, it has more growing!!(I think it is because the have shade during the hotter day hours -under oak tree). I'm so happy. It is my first time gardening. I'm in central florida zone 9b too. You were the one who inspired me to grow. Thank you soooo much. Continue with your amazing work 👏

    Awesome I will look up that variety. Try adding more potassium, and phosphorus to see if that helps it produce more. Also, shaking the flowers helps pollinate each one to make sure it will fruit.

    I learned so much thank you!!! I wish I knew much of this weeks ago, I started my seeds about 3 weeks ago and live in a colder climate. Now that I know I will try a few cheating growth techniques. The problem I had last year (1st year trying & I COULDA SAVED EM… DANG!!!!) came from something like Japanese beetles living underneath the leaves poking holes & leaving eggs. I sprayed em (I think with Neem) didn’t seem to do much but they didn’t have a huge impact on the plant either. I only had 2, this year I plan to grow several & would like to know what to do if an infesting occurrs.

    Are you harvesting them in time? Usually they turn brown/yellow as they get overripe and go to seed. Harvest them while they are still glossy and tender.

    I would say a 7 gallon grow bag is good, except for the very large fruiting eggplant cultivars like Black Beauty. They kind of need more space. Check out my eggplant growing guide for more info: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4anmdKcc7OXm7A.html

    😢 I need help. I'm also growing in Florida. 9B The Black beauty. I'm having issues trying to set fruit tons of flowers but nothing is taken. I pollinate it by hand using a fluffy makeup brush. This is the first year I'm growing eggplant. I'm having a hard time pollinating my plants. I've shaken them, used a small paint brush & even used an electric toothbrush on them but only got two to pollinate. The plant gives lots off lots of blooms. Can you give me any tips to pollinate them?

  • @JerrasGarden

    @JerrasGarden

    Жыл бұрын

    Hand shaking them has been the best trick for me. Try to shake in the morning after the dew has evaporated. Dew/humidity causes pollen to stick and not float around easily to pollinate the flowers. Fertilize with something heavier in phosphorus and potassium which supports flower and fruit production.

    Put one plant per grow bag. If you can grow them in a 10 or 15 gallon size grow bag even better, because Black Beauty eggplants get HUGE. My plants have been growing over 2 years now and are like 4FT tall and 4FT wide. They are perennial if your in an area that doesnt get too cold.

    @ Jerra's Garden , do the seedlings of the lavender thai mini frog eggplants have very dark and shiny leaves? I was watching the videos in hopes of seeing a smaller one, but everything's adult fruiting size, so the leaves just look like a bit smaller normal egg plant leaves. Yeah, the seeds I had grew into plants that look more like a pepper than an eggplant, and nothing like the seedlings you showed planting. Hmmm...

  • @JerrasGarden

    @JerrasGarden

    The seedlings should look like any other eggplant seedling. I would nto say the leaves are shiny and dark green like a pepper. They are more dull medium green with a slight fuzzy appearence.

    Hi, I have a few eggplant trees that have been growing for about 9 months. I have gotten several harvests, but I noticed that even though I am still getting eggplants the size of them now are half to 1/3 the size they were at the start. I have been fertilizing them. Any idea what I can do? Or is this normal? Thanks for any advice.

  • @JerrasGarden

    @JerrasGarden

    10 ай бұрын

    Hrmmmm that is perplexing. The only thing I can think of is that its too hot or the plant is not getting enough water. Usually, the first harvest of anything is the best. Better quality, size, etc.... after that it can change a little.

    I thought the eggplants have to be spaced 18” apart? If multiple seedlings can be transplanted in the same solo cup, that’s awesome!

  • @JerrasGarden

    @JerrasGarden

    7 ай бұрын

    As a home backyard gardener, you can break the rules a little bit and plant closer together. If a cup has two seedlings, I plant them together in the same hole. I take care of my soil and fertilize consistently so they don't compete for nutrients. It's different in commercial farm settings where the soils are depleted.
