Hello. Blood pressure is not static, it is dynamic; therefore the old cluff monitors are obsolete. They are just a single snapshot in time. For a more accurate assessment and averaging of one's bp over a 24 hour period, it would be best obtained by using a cuffless 24/7 continuous bp monitoring device such as the Aktiia bp monitor. Many are incorrectly diagnosed with hypertension based on measurements in doctors offices for several reasons, white coat syndrome, or they are not permitted to sit in silence and relax for a period time to achieve a true resting bp value, not to mention the person taking the bp reading asking them questions while the process is taking place, or not properly supporting the arm being measured. As a result I believe many are placed on a lifetime of bp meds that are not really needed.

I've used the old manual arm type and the modern electronic arm type. Not really a fan of the wrist type due to variations in body position resulting in different readings. I also like the electronic type because the deflation speed and pulse readings are likely to be more consistent between readings. I used to have fun with the nurses because you can approximate your readings by noting when you feel the pulse start in your arm ( systolic/upper reading ) and then noting when the pulse disappears ( diastolic/lower reading). This IS NOT an accurate way to take your BP with a manual cuff but it can give you a quick indication of whether something is really problematic and you should find your stethoscope....lol

I use an Omron arm style monitor. I can't recall the model number but it cost me $80-90. I have mixed feelings about it's accuracy as it often seems somewhat erratic. But then just about all the instruments I use for health monitoring display only so/so accuracy. Profits over performance seems to be the corporate motto these days I'm afraid.

What do you think about resting the wrist cuff on your chest as opposed to holding it in the air in front of you?

Either seems to be ok. The two important factors are that it is at the level of you hard and your arm is relaxed.

What a joke. It always bugs me that the nurse immediate checks your blood pressure and I am sitting here thinking "don't they teach you in school how and when to take blood pressure"? Some offices use the wrist monitor and have you put your hand on the opposite side of the chest to get it above the heart. I use a very old Omron digital and it is always pretty close to the doctor's blood pressure monitor. Thanks.

I use an old fashioned manual blood pressure monitor. No batteries no LCD display.
