6 Beginner Tips For Roller Skating Outside

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi Skaters. I'm so excited this week as @imbrandonfarris featured me in his video, I haven't stopped smiling (or laughing). He has to be the bravest person and quite possibly the funniest too. Hope the ankle is ok xx
Here in the UK the weather is finally behaving so I've been skating outside again, yay! Thought I'd do a quick video on some of the things you need to know when heading outside.
Have fun and stay safe.

    Normally these "how to skate outside" videos irritate me to no end because the person is there explaining how to skate on uneven surfaces while standing on the smoothest promenade EVER! But not Katie 😂, that's some proper normal surfaces one would find outside! I loved this and picked up some good hints (especially the one foot lemons)! Keep up the good work

    YES! I am struggling to skate on the surfaces where I live. They are so bumpy and chipped and you name it. Every time I go out to try, I get caught up the instant I start to go. I have 78a wheels, but I still can't get rolling on that rough surface. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I know it has to be me and not the wheels. If anyone reads this, can you please give me some advice on how to START rolling on the rough surfaces?

    Just started getting a little more adventurous with my outdoor skating. I used to only skate outside in a small flat-ish area but just this week I have been skating over cracks and uneven grounds. The stagger stance and staying super low is how I am able to do it, basically bending the knees as much as possible but keeping my back straight. The first time I skated over a crack I was going super slow and was almost sitting... that's how low I was and when I saw it wasn't too bad and I started getting more confidence and picked up the speed a bit which actually helped.

    I started ice skating a few months ago. It was terrifying at first (i never did any sports and my physique was awful), but i got pretty Ok and confident with it over time. I can move freely with both feet on the ice, or even with one. I can skate backward on both feet, i can plow stop. I only fell three or four times times total i think, nothing major (never word any padding). I got bored of going in circles in one direction constantly and started dreaming about roller skating - change of scenery, can go whenever wherever. It honestly thought my ice skating skills would give me a huge head start and i would be flying with them in no time. WRONG!!!!!! I was wrong! The hubris! I fell three times in an hour, pretty gnarly, Thank God i was wearing serious protection on my elbows and wrists! I still sort of sprained my left wrist! It’s like I’m a complete and total beginner to skating! Terrifying! It was very hard to manoeuvre, the wheels are very clunky, wide and flat to the very edges (might try to change them), the wind, the ups and down, obstacles, uneven pavements oh my gosh! I stand humbled! But I am not giving up. I will look for better wheels and better surfaces. It was exhilarating as well as scary. Can’t wait to groove in them eventually!

  • @Skatie

    @Skatie

    You’ll get it. The transition takes a few goes and outside is so unforgiving too. If you’re coming from ice, don’t put the back of the skate in first like ice skaters do. Aim for the ball of the foot you’ll be much better balanced when changing feet that way.

    Thank you for bringing so much clarity with these videos! I recently picked up roller skating after I got rejected from my dream art school (Sheridan College’s famously competitive Animation program). It’s been a great new thing to break into, and it really helped me move on these past couple months! Would you have any advice to give as for getting more defined edges? Since quads have wider trucks, I find it harder to lean into a side (and I actually find my in-lines easier to manage for that reason). Keep up the excellent work!

    Thank you. Sorry to hear about your disappointment. Skating is definitely my happy place to leave all the everyday worries behind for a while. I’ve just added an edges drills video. Make sure you have movement in your trucks too that can help with edges.

    I primarily skate outside and I live up north so ideal surfaces are limited and I am used to it. The staggered stance is definitely where you want to be outdoors never the neutral. My body weight is always primarily on my back leg with the knee bent slightly as a shock absorber. Any weight I put on the lead foot is more in the heel and if I see debris or a substantial crack I will lift the toe on the lead skate. Briefly locking your stance muscularly to brace for a possible catch on pavement is helpful too. Anytime you can skate over cracks at an angle is going to lessen your chances of tripping with quad skates too. I rarely take a spill outside using these techniques and can power through some pretty rough surfaces and even patches of light gravel at a pretty high rate of speed. Over time when you develop your legs and dexterity you can even try to incorporate jumping and hopping from the staggered position to avoid pavement obstacles and large cracks or surface variations.

    All great tips!! I find myself telling a lot of skaters some of these same tips when they ask how I can skate outside so often! 100% always recommend wearing pads too!! One other thing to mention is to get yourself some beefy toestops! You've got some great ones here, so this tip is for everyone else. Having large toestops can help you hold your balance when you're stopped, and also gives you a lot more power to control your speed when you are turning around backwards to stop. Powerdyne Jupiter or Gumball toestops are both really great options.

    I've been skating more or less for two summers with bad luck (inside wheels, bad feet, rain) and I've finally started fixing some of those things for this summer! This video is the most helpful I've seen since the Finnish pavements look exactly the same as in the UK (If a little bit worse 😂) and I feel a lot more confident now once my wheels arrive. Especially the hill tip was super important, I hadn't seen that anywhere in action with not perfectly smooth hills. Thank you so much and love from Finland! Side note to everyone else: if you get new wheels check if the pack has 4 or 8 wheels 😅 and 8 bearings will not be enough for two skates. They sold out the wheel color I got so now my already glitter colored skates will be even more chaotic, which I'm not mad about.

Since I don't have a lot of experience skating outside as a beginner who cant control the skates, (I started skating outside after I already did 10 years of artistic skating) I hope I can find some Tips an tricks on your channel, that might be more suited for that group than figure skating elements. I wish I watched this before I decided I could tackle one of those overpass things that go over a road and they're really steep and narrow. Good choice for my first day skating! It wasn't a graceful descent but at least I was able to slowly melt down the pass hanging on to the railing with minimal witnesses and minimal injuries. I wanted to know, how do you deal with those yellow bumpy curb thingies? The ones where sidewalks slope downwards to meet with the street.

    This was really helpful, thanks! Question, what requirements should I have to start skating outside? For example, be able to transition, skate backwards and stuff like that? I recently bought a pair of quads after not skating for 3 years, and before that I wore inlines! I've only tried skating at my nearby playground, but I want to try going to a park.

  • @Skatie

    @Skatie

    I’d recommend having a couple of ways of stopping confidently. You never know what you might encounter that needs you to stop quickly and a confident forward skate with a staggered stance. Turns and backwards for outside are a little more risky so perhaps only give those a go once your feeling ready. Gear up and go for it. Have fun xx ⛑️

    How do you feel about the vibrations against your feet whilst skating outside? Lol. Strange question I know but every time I try and skate on normal surface outside the vibrations from all of the little bumps hurt the bottom of my soles. Is this something you just have to get used to? Amazing video, I’m so glad I found this 👏🥰

  • @Skatie

    @Skatie

    Жыл бұрын

    The wheels make a huge difference in ride comfort. Soft wheels 78a-85a absorb the vibrations etc and then the bigger the better 60-65mm. Think if them as your tyres the bigger and squishier they are the less vibrations will travel to your feet.

    The t stop needs you to be able to balance on one leg so the other can be turned out and placed behind. It might just been you need a little more practice on one leg first.

    I can definitely say pads and a helmet are a must for me I broke my wrist just over a year ago on my skates stepping onto concrete from grass. I was one of these people that was like oh I don't need them until it happened. Anyways I now have a metal plate and 6 screws in my wrist for life and my skates don't go on my feet unless I have my knee pads and wrist guards on at the very least. Most of the time I wear a helmet as well as I have slipped over backwards countless times and hit my head on the floor. My advice for anyone who wants to skate is get the protective equipment it might not look cool but I would rather look silly than end up back in hospital.

  • @Skatie

    It can take a lot of leg strength to get the one foot bubble too. You could try to loosen your truck just a 1/4 turn at a time and see if it helps. Remember if it gets so loose you can move it with your hand best to tighten it up a little. Hope this helps you 🛼💕😀happy rolling
