Now you know why Elton’s vocals sounded so good when Nigel was in the band. I love his drumming. He has this ability to sit way back in the pocket. Plays on the back of the beat. Being a drummer I have always inspired to play like this when needed. And his fills are great. I had the pleasure of seeing Leland in New Your with Billy Cobham. Front row at the house of blues. My brother and I living it up. Just two country boys from Georgia

Hi Michael, just curious as to where Dee lived in Brentwood. I used to live on Knox Valley. Nigel and Dee were the heart and soul of the band. I know they were really close also. Dee was a fine, fine bass player and tell your wife thank you for helping care for him in his final times. A true Legend and a sweet soul like you say.

Hi Leland ! Great stories. Nigel isn’t flashy or fast but I consider him to be one of the greatest drummers of all time. I have never met him but I’ve heard how nice and humble he is. The period between 1975-1980 when he let Nigel and Dee go is one of Elton’s bleakest periods of music (imo). And I believe Elton finally realized this. Long live Nigel! T. In Atlanta

This is one of my favorite Nigel Olsson albums. I bought it when it was released and was disappointed that it was never released on CD. In the 90's, I bought a second mint copy of the album and used a cd recorder to make a digital copy of the album. I still listen to it today on my i-Pod. Well done Leland!!

I watched the video on the making of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and I think it was Gus Dudgeon who explained that when they recorded the backing vocals for the title track, Nigel (singing the high part) was so loud, he had to face away from the microphone so he wouldn’t overpower everyone else. Cool little story. Awesome video, Lee! Love Squeaky! Have a wonderful rest of your day everyone and a great weekend.

I love your stories Lee, but this one really resonates. I first heard Nigel on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in 1973; I was in the first years of high school and bored with learning classical piano, but I got inspired because I had never heard anyone play drums with so much musicality before. So I convinced my folks to buy me a drum kit and wore out 3 copies of GYBR and played along to anything else that Nigel was on - including this album, which I loved. Thanks for all your insights.

The Berklee Zoom was a treat. Billy Cobham was so animated and had so much to say. I’ve been able to do about 6-7 of the webinars, and the amazing thing is that the bass department is hosting, and it’s almost always the drummers that steal the show. In this instance, Billy was the featured guest, but in some of the others, Bernard Purdie would get more in than Chuck Rainey, Lenny White popped in for a few minutes and made a big impression. When Berklee did an Immediate Family webinar, Lee held it up and didn’t get outdone by his band mates. But with last night’s Billy Cobham webinar line up, you could write an encyclopaedia of modern jazz/rock/pop/funk/soul music. Blown away!

Why not edit them before releasing them to anyone? It’s very frustrating.

A lot of great feedback here about Nigel Olsson and these songs and his voice and drumming, and the cast of characters on the record. I just want to say that the third ‘Motown’ song was an absolute killer track and performance top to bottom. Berklee/Billy Cobham was a great hang, too. At one point Lee’s Clubhouse was busy in the Chat window, too, eh?!

We're developing a cast of characters with Lee that could form a board game, or a TV show ... the Knucklehead Brothers (aka "The Boys"), Squeaky The Chair, Professor Copious Notes (the pad of paper) ... and the creepy guy who used to hang around in the background. Think Banana Splits meets The Monkees meets The Osbournes ...

Way back probably about the time rocket man was in the charts Nigel Olsen was my school friends next door neighbour, when he came in and out of the house he would always give us the kids a wave, it was amazing to see him appear on top of the Pops. A boy from Sunderland in the northeast of England that made it big, next time you see him say, WHY I, this is Geordie for , O YES

Having listened to pretty much every Elton John recording that Nigel has ever played on, I can say that he is noteworthy for his use of pairs of triplets. DUH tuh duh DUH tuh duh DUH tuh Duh DUH tuh duh Dum. Like leading into the chorus of "Burn Down the Mission" and many others. Come to think of that, that would be a great trivia question. How many instances can you point to where Nigel uses triplets to go into a chorus.
