For me at least, 60s Strats seem to sit in a more aurally comfortable tone range than their 50s equivalents.

They're both so good I wouldn't have a preference. I have a vintage strat and an American standard that are different sounding but ones not better than the other.

The video I didn't know I needed! Great tones here, Jack. It's hard to choose between the two. I love the conventional 60s Strat tone but the differences in the 50s were surprising and nice. Like you said: warmer and fatter. By the way, what were you playing while demoing the bridge pickups? It was lovely. Thanks for another great video!

I prefer the 50's sound. Since my personal preference leans toward lower output PU, for the type of music I play. I do have a 54 and 56 RI's. Wouldn't mind a 60's rosewood one, if someone gave it to me. 😆 Excellent video by the way!👍👍👍👍👍

When you push low-output pickups, do they growl or honk more easily?

I'm not really the guy to go around giving opinions on Stratocasters because I think almost every Gibson guitar will be better than any Stratocaster in any situation but since you asked, I like the 1950s style a little better because with overdriven tones the differences are relatively minimal and I don't really have a preference between the two but I do like clean tones on a 1950s Stratocaster better than a 1960s Stratocaster.

My favorite is 50’s tone but 60’s neck profile.

Right! I’m not crazy about the baseball bat neck shape. The Squier CV 50’s Strat has the thinner soft C shaped neck.

Your playing at 15:34 might be the best clean tone I've ever heard on a Stratocaster

I have 3 vintage style Strats, a 1982 ‘57 AVRI, a 2012 ‘62 AVRI, & a 2022 ‘61 AV. Heard on recordings or in a mix with other instruments the differences are subtle if heard at all. However, on my own the feel & tone when playing are more pronounced. If anything the maple neck of the ‘57 is snappier. I think the pickups make more difference than the neck/fretboard. The ‘82 with maple definitely has more clarity, & it has the original Fullerton pickups in. The 2012 has 57/62 pickups and are slightly more aggressive. The 2022 has Pure Vintage ‘61 pickups which are slightly more mellow, although all have similar readings. I can honestly say I don’t prefer any one over the others in sound & tone.

Both are great sounding because, you know...Fender Strat, but I personally prefer the fullness and clarity of the 50s style. The differences are pretty subtle though, and in a mix I doubt it would really matter. Really fun to hear that side by side though. Great video!

I have both - a 50s CS and a 62 AVRI; the differences in the vid are similar to mine but in person in the room it’s a bigger difference (the “ping” articulation vs the grungier 60s), which goes to show that in a recording or live to an audience it may not matter as much as it does to the player and can be adjusted with an EQ pedal; the V vs C neck does feel a lot different; in your playing I sense the 50s to be more suited to you?

Thanks for this video, Jack. The 50s Strat sounds more chimey to my ears. And I love that sound. But I also love the sound of the 60’s Strat you’re playing. So we need both, right? 😂

Interesting how the overall guitar community goes back to these early originals The late 80s and early 90s Strats with Lace Sensor pickups, LSR roller nuts, two-point vibratos and interesting electronics may be the ‘best’ standard features of regular Strats, but they didn’t last

What about the fretboard materials? Do they make a difference in playability? I had ‘52 RI Tele with a polyurethane lacquered neck and found it to be very sticky on my hands. I had to use baby powder on them in order to move up and down the fretboard.

I liked the fullness of the 60’s better, until you compared the bridge/middle and bridge positions. And there, I liked the 50’s better. They were “bell like”, as you said, but “spanky” was the term that came to my mind (thanks Greg Koch). Clear differences between the pu sets. But having both would allow you to languish in the mood you were in. Great head to head!

Have always loved the phrasing and tones of Gilmour... But cannot bring myself to own a maple fretboard. Besides...a well worn maple fretboard looks like it could transmit tetanus.😂 Perhaps one day a roasted maple fretboard may be tried...? So...definitely a 60's is my preference. 😉👍 Pups are all appreciated, but prefer AlNiCo 5s with height adjustments 😁👍👍 Your Shoreline gold is a beaut😃👍👍 Cool video Jack😎👍👍 😎✌👍❤🖖
