Roger Banister broke the first 4 minute mile in history in 1954. The time was 3:59.4. If you convert this pace to 5000 meters, you get 12:23.78. Scientists of that era were saying a 4 minute mile was next to physically impossible for the human body. Now, just imagine how they would have felt about someone running more than 3.1 times that distance at the same exact pace as Roger Bannister did his mile. Now consider that Joshua Cheptegei’s 12:35.36 is only 11.57 seconds short of accomplishing that very mind boggling and insane pace not for one mile but for 5000 meters!

This really feels impossible. I started running recently and tried 5000m. I got it done just under 30 minutes and was super sweaty and tired. Had to put everything I had in that run. And just for fun, I looked up the WR and I was stunned to see it was under 13 minutes. I knew it had to be wrong because no one, I mean how can anyone run that fast for that long. But hats off to him and all the other participants, that is really a true feat of mental strength and endurance. P.S. I am trying to run 5k under 25 minutes, any tips and suggestions are welcome.

  • @bayleymassey

it really is incredible man. if i was in your shoes i would say the first and most important thing is consistency. week in and week out just make sure your running. if you miss a speed session day... fine. replace it with an easy run. just get out and do something. Obvcourse train smart by running by feel and not over doing it but definitely just stay consistent as the main thing. In regards to cutting that time down i would definitely suggest getting in 5k/7k worth of reps on your speed session days and run these reps all at 5k or FASTER pace. 400m reps, 600m reps, 800m reps and even 1k & 1mile reps are such good sessions to get those types of muscle fibres working. Easy runs are an important part to your training to as this will be the foundation of your running and will make all the difference when trying to bring the time down. the 5k is a 93% aerobic race. Make sure easy means EASY. the key thing is balancing easy runs with hard speed sessions. once you run certain reps in certain times.... when you get round to doing the same session again, try and shorten the recovery. hope this helps man.

Gustavo Paulette As much as i hate to say it, i do kind of agree with that statement :( i think shoe technology has ultimately been the worst thing to ever happen in athletics. Every result onward from the time carbon plated shoes came out - will always be questioned and compared to runners who never had them. For example; what if Pauls Radcliffe had them? That would have changed the womens marathon record completely! How about bekele? Could he have ran faster on the track with them? I do believe the shoes worn by Cheptegei tonight do not have a carbon plate inside but the concept remains the same! Everything is changing and its always going to be a hit and miss for everyone

@@bayleymassey the shoes he ran in are called dragonfly or something, they have carbon plate tech just like the vaporfly, some Canadian first ran in them two weeks ago and pred by some crazy margin, it was obvious that cheptegei would massively pr today but I did not expect a WR considering before tonight he wasn't even in the top 200 of all time, I'm just wondering what will happen if the likes of barega whose pr was 12:43 gets into those spikes... Sub 12:30?

Bayley Massey I think there are boy things coming for this dude like in the 10k and maybe the half marathon. But I think Kipchoges marathon 1:59 will not be beat for centuries. He is literally marathon king
