5 Ways to Sound Better on the Violin

5 Ways to Sound Better on the Violin!
Violin can be a very touchy instrument. Too little pressure and you're skating across the strings and squeaking. Too much pressure and now you're scratching and sound worse than nails on a chalkboard. So here are a few little tips I've found to help violinists.
If your violin itself isn't a very good instrument, you're going to struggle to sound good period. I always recommend my students to invest in a high quality student violin from the start. You'll notice a dramatic difference in your playing immediately! This one is my absolute favorite: kennedyviolins.com/products/l...

First of all, thank you Corrie for taking the time to make these important videos! My violin was sounding super crappy. I thought it was the strings. I changed the strings but it still sounded super crappy. So at my lesson with my teacher, I told her the problem. She took the violin and my bow and played. She said: How often do you rosin? I said every day. She said that's your problem. You are putting way too much rosin on your bow. So, I cleaned the hairs with a cleaner about three times and then PROPERLY rosined it and don't rosin every day. Problem solved! Now I can play and sound just like Augustin Hadelich (I wish).

Yes! So true! I had a student with the same issue. Over-rosining is just as much an issue as under-rosining.

Hi! I think I’ve seen this question a few times from you. Just wanted to make sure you got it figured out? I use the “natural note jingle”. All hi 1s except for the E, all low 2s except for the G.

I have way too much of a preference haha Andrea rosin is my holy grail. (Just be sure if you do switch to it to not use any other rosins. It will strip the bow and you’ll need a rehair. Learned this the hard way 🫠)

You can wipe off the excess rosin with a clean dry toothbrush. Dark rosin is softer than yellow rosin.

Firstly, it's fine to sit if you are practising for orchestral or other forms of chamber music where you would sit when performing. Secondly, your contact point can change depending on the type of sound or colour you are trying to project, or where your left hand is placed on the string. By the way, it's an f-hole, not a "decoration." Also, could you cover something a little less basic than "play on the right string!?" I was hoping this video would be helpful.

I gear my videos specifically to beginner/intermediate students. So while I understand there are different lanes to play on the violin, I’ve chosen to talk about one so the student’s main focus can be on having a straight bow. I’m totally aware of what the decorations are called which is why I chose not to say it. And I’ve had so so many comments asking how to play on one string. So I addressed it here. I do pepper in more advanced tips, but that’s not the primary goal for my channel. I hope that helps give some clarity. I do appreciate your feedback ❤️

@@Corrietheviolinist I understand. I'm sorry for being so critical of your video. As a beginner, I would have found this advice very helpful. I guess I was just in a bad mood at the time but a think your videos are of good quality. Sorry for the criticism and have a nice day!
