The company I work for put me in my own truck after only 4 months. I wasn’t really properly trained and I dread going into work due to the fear of not really knowing what I’m doing. I watch a lot of plumbing videos for self education purposes and for assistance. I also collect scraps (hose bibs, fill valves, unfamiliar flappers, etc.) from the scrap yard from previous jobs either by me or other techs to examine and mess around with to help me understand it. I watch you, Replumb, Roger Wakefield and much more everyday to improve my knowledge and skills. I’m also getting paid $20 rn and will be going to $22 real soon. They explained to us that we’ll make more and more as time goes on. There’s a guy that’s been doing it for about 10 months and is now making $28 an hour. If I become field supervisor, I can make like $35 an hour. That’s great, but the not knowing how to do stuff and lack/improper training is what concerns me. What do you think of my situation and what would you do if you were me?

Hey brother, sorry to hear you’re not feeling totally comfortable where you are. Question for you, are you considered an apprentice, and will you ever be an apprentice? My thoughts are that if they don’t plan on getting you licensed, then maybe it would be wise to send out a few resumes to companies that will help you in licensing? Maybe it’s worth looking into?

@@Kennymolotov Thanks for getting back with me! Yeah, I’m considered an apprentice and also I can get my license here with this company. I saw a video of yours a couple days ago addressing my particular situation in the “When can a plumbing apprentice work alone?” video. It was comforting to see that other people besides me thought it was crazy to put me out by myself like that, especially so quick and with inadequate training. I was just really curious what your thoughts was on that since you’ve been doing this for a good while.

Im so glad i watched this video. Going to apply to be an apprentice right now and never knew about getting registered. This could definitely save some headache later on not having my time wasted since my end goal is journeyman

Kenny! I am working towards transitioning from my career in brewing beer to plumbing. I was told from my local college that I needed to upgrade math before applying. I totally agree with everything that you say. Ever since Covid,people have become lazy and rely on there phone to much. Showing up on time and thinking about the job is a major hurdle. Thank Ken!

Going on 4 yrs and never got mentioned being registered as a apprentice or pay stubs,these is something I thought about but wasn't shure how to go about it,I've been thinking of leaving and this video helps me more with that thought on moving forward.thank you

Glad it helps friend. Please keep in mind that the apprenticeship process is different in every province or territory. So google search what it is in the area you live to clarify!

This is an amazing video good job

Most of this you can apply to any job, not just plumbing apprenticeships. Everything starts from basics. Come on time, do what they tell you to do, show positive attitude and if you serious about your job, you will earn respect eventually and they will treat you well.

Have experienced in the armed security industry, and making a change. Grew up doing repairs as a kid, and enjoyed working with my hands while getting dirty. Thank you for this video. Helps out with what to look out for while waiting for the union. Any “off the top” tips (aside from the published videos) about non-union and union? Thank again for all of your insight!

Thanks Friend! There are non-union companies that also have good benefits packages and perks. But it all depends on the company you go to. So keep that in mind, the union is a great option, but not the only option. Let me know how looking for work goes!

The point that I see most is to have a good apprentice you need to have a good journeyman As a journeyman you have to put the same effort into teaching as the apprentice puts into learning

If the company registers you, then what areas are classes being taken at? Schools connected with the companies? Or classes taken at community college/trade?

You would be given classes to a college that has seats. You get a letter in the mail offering you a spot, and once you accept it, you will then get a time of going to school!

Is a plumbing helper the same as an apprentice?

“Apprentice” means you’ve been registered by your plumbing company with Skilled Trades Ontario. “Plumbing Helper” means you have not. Hope this helps.

That "arrive 15 minutes before shift" doesn’t work for me. My time costs bud.

I’d rather be 15 minutes early than 5 minutes late due to traffic or other issues. Coming in late just sets off the day on the wrong foot with foreman and coworkers
