Bought the fastcap tapes years ago, and they are the only tape measures that have stood with me. Everyone who borrows one loves them and asks where to get them. I also love my flat blade tape, makes measuring super simple on most wood with a flat face! Their glü bot glue bottles are amazing as well

Love your videos! The lefty/righty FastCap tape measure (the green one) is my go-to. I am right-handed but I use a tape measure the way a left-handed person would, so I was always trying to read upside-down numbers. Many measurements went awry, and a whole bunch of wood was wasted. FastCap lefty/righty was a game-changer for me.

I've used that cross-dowel technique for decades. Never had a jig to help line things up though. Great way to add a nice look to your work, but I've always done it just as a way to strengthen the joints. Nice to see someone making a quality metal-body tool to help with the process and I will definitely have to pick up a set.

The thing is, I am not a "woodworker." I do not make plaques and I do not make furniture. I am a home improvement guy, and I am only that by default. I bought a distressed foreclosure 13 years ago, and I have spent that much time living in it and bringing it back from the dead. But what are houses made of? That's right, even your brick house had a wooden frame underneath. So all of my tools are the same tools you guys use to build your furniture and picture frames. And this guy right here, he is very helpful. Yeah, he is selling things. But aren't we all? He is selling things in a way that helps me out a LOT! That's the right way to do that!

I’ve been carrying a Fast Cap Lefty-Righty on my left pocket for some years. Never know which end of the board I’m going to be measuring from. Love how 8th and 16th marks are numbered. You forgot to mention that if you don’t slap a sticker on the side, that white disk serves as an erasable note pad to jot down measurements when partner is at the top of the ladder and you left your paper pad back at the saw. Use it every day.

  • @clutteredchicagogarage2720
    @clutteredchicagogarage2720 Жыл бұрын

That dowel jig looks really nice. I have and use that small Suizan saw. One thing that I don't like about it is that their steel rusts very easily. If you use it to flush-cut dowels and you cut the dowels before the glue sets completely, any remaining moisture content from the glue can start to cause the saw to rust after you put it away. If you get this saw, you probably want to wipe it down with some sort of rust inhibitor any time it might come in contact with any moisture. I think even moisture content in wood itself can be enough to cause surface rust. With that said, even though mine has some traces of surface rust on it, it still cuts fine. I think it's good for flush-cutting and also sometimes cutting off small parts. I also use it when I'm cutting notches in wood pieces -- like with half-lap or cross-lap joints, and I want to get nice crisp corners. I'll first cut with a circular saw, but if my cut edges don't meet up perfectly then I'll finish the cut with a small saw like this at he corners. Since this saw is razor-thin with a very fine kerf, you can get really square corners when you finish your cuts with these, and you will have little to no required touch-up with a chisel after you cut.

Got me that flush trim saw a couple of years ago when I was building a coffin-shaped bookcase for my daughter. I used pocketholes to join the top and bottom sections together and then plugged the holes. The cheap flush cut saw I had destroyed the surface around the plugs. I upgraded to the Suizan and now I use the cheap saw to cut dowels to length. The other cool feature of the FastCap tape measures is the temporary stop under the tape. Instead of using the push-down stop above the tape to temporarily stop the tape, which can be hard to control (especially compared to my old Stanley's), the one on the bottom is much easier to use. My problem is, I've used the Stanley's for so long, before I got my first FastCap, that I never remember to use the temporary stop underneath. Lol That dowel jig looks like the bee's knees. It's certainly not for every dowelling application, but man, talk about a strong joint.

On the FastCap tape measure the spot where his sticker went is a writable surface, perfect for jotting down measurements. For my cabinet work, I use the FastCap flat back tape measures. It's a flat blade (no cup like regular tape measures, so measuring and marking on a board is easy and accurate. It's not for inside measurements, as the hook doesn't have the normal slippage found on regular tape measures.

The Rocker Router set up jig is missing the 8 mm shank router bits, which with CNC being so popular, are more and more common now. I'd own one otherwise. I have a Fastcap tape measure that has a center-finding scale built in. Not only is the center-finding feature awesome, it's the only tape measure I have (sadly, not even my Stanley's are this good) that matches my very expensive Starrett measuring tools for accuracy. That is, no matter how far the tape measure is extended, the distance marks match exactly the marks on the Starrett measure. Excellant tool.

Man! Can you make a video on a high budget break the bank tool video? Like “if you’re just starting out and money is no object these are all the tools you’ll need to do just about anything”. That would be a super fun video!

Accidentally clicked on this and I'm not a woodmaker but the quality of the video and your explanations are just great. The examples and explanations clearly show you are a great teacher. Thanks for putting this video together and you've got a new subscriber.

wouldn't a woodmaker be a someone who plants trees thus making wood? a woodworker is someone who mainly works with wood.

The folded Suizan saw is not dovetail saw. It is a ryoba(两刃, which means double edge) saw. A Japanese dovetail saw typically have saw back to increase stability.

Someday we will hopefully see some woodworking on a regular & consistent basis like it used to be. Algorithm or not, that's what brought me here & had me. Haven't enjoyed what used to be in a very long time. These types of videos are a dime a dozen now, everywhere on YT unfortunately.

Understandable. I make content for a living. People watch these videos 10x more than anything else so you're in the minority. I watch the data and see what works and what doesn't. Dime a dozen or not, these are what people want to see.

If you lay things out right, you can touch or overlap the dowels so the visible ends look like a figure 8. Or use just one side so you get a row of teardrops going down the line.

If you use a regular dowel jig you don't have the dowels exposed. I can't see any application where I would use this worthless jig. I don't see anything amazing about it.

The only problem I've found with flush cut saws is storage. Not the storage itself, but when you do store it, if you're not careful, the teeth get damaged. But no matter how careful you are, if you let someone else use your saw it almost always comes back damaged. I really like your videos. BTW.

Anyone have thoughts on using the Massca Dowel Jig on Langstroth boxes (beehive box) instead of using box joints? I can't use a dado and this would be much easier for me to toss a couple dowels into the sides instead.
