5 Tips To Catch MORE Bass Flipping THICK Grass & Vegetation

Спорт

Bass love to get into the thickest of cover they can find and one of the best ways to catch these fish with heavy flipping or the "punching" technique. Punching grass or other heavy cover requires specific gear and technique to be successful and lucky for us BassinBill breaks down everything you need to know. Check out the links below for all the flipping/punching gear you need to catch more bass out of the thick stuff!

The Snell debate.... In 2019, I decided to settle for good, in my mind, the knot debate for punching/flipping ~ I fished hard from late May through late September on a handful of good grass lakes in my area, splitting my time using the Snell and Double Palomar... I had to annoyingly keep track of all my bites and I got a lot... I hooked and landed almost 12% more bass using the Double Palomar, overall. I punched shallow and mid-depth mats, pitched Milfoil, Cabbage, and Coontail, worked thick water willow, and across the board I did better with the Double Palomar. Most of the time I was using 3/4oz & 1oz weights, occasionally using an 1 1/4oz, and rarely using 1 1/2oz. Using the Palomar, the hook to land ratio on the 3/4oz and 1oz weights was nearly identical, landing 86% & 84% respectively, but once I jumped to the 1 1/4oz, the success rate decreased by almost 6%, and the rate decreased by just over 12% with the 1-1/2oz weight. The percentages using the Snell were worse than the Palomar in every weight category and grass type (all weights pegged). My sample size was 146 Largemouth and 16 Smallmouth, so plenty of fish to draw a definitive conclusion. When flipping grass my hook-set is to reel tight until the rod starts to load and then sweep up and over my right shoulder while reeling. I DO NOT Slack-Line hookset when flipping heavy weights in grass or in general. Shimano Expride rods (H - MF & XH - MF), Shimano Curado K reels (7 speeds), Sufix 832 50lb Chartreuse braid, Decoy -Texas Lock Punch Stops, Picasso Slick Core Tungsten Weights, Trokar Monster Flipping Hook 4/0 & 5/0 (TK-135), Berkley Pit Boss 4”, Berkley Rocket Craw 4”, and a Yum Bad Mamma 4.25”. Take what you will from my data, but it was hard work to collect and I believe it’s enough of a sample size to determine the Snell knot significantly decreases hook to land ratios when compared with a Double Palomar. Also, there’s no doubt that the heavier weights land fewer fish, so use as light of a weight as you possibly can.

I'm lazy though so I dont color my yellow line. it's still effective though. still getting the same hook up as the next guy.

3:40 That lure is completely gone and most likely in the stomach of that Bass, and will potentially cause a slow and painful death. All because this doinker wanted a couple second dopamine hit. You're selfish and ignorant if you're a person who's willing to kill any animal in the name of you having a couple seconds of feeling good. Either use artificial lures that can't be easily swallowed, or use natural lures. Or, just don't fish if you can't fish ethnically and respectfully.
