5 Tips for Making Map Art in Survival Minecraft

Ойындар

I recently finished a massive map art project in my survival Minecraft world, and in the process I discovered that there were a lot of videos that told you how to make map art, but not many that gave you tips to make the process a little easier, especially in survival. So, here are my 5 tips to help you out in your own map art projects.

MapArtCraft: rebane2001.com/mapartcraft/

Awesome video, me and a friend recently had a big brain moment. You can use frost walker during the night to fill in an ocean super quickly with a flat background after you build everything else in the map. And if you need to make the whole background white, just walk around with the frost walker while pulling the snow golems. If your map art is level with the ocean, just put string on the blocks you don’t want white to keep the snow off. Important thing to mention, you must get it all done in one night. So 2 or 3 people are needed.

That’s an awesome idea! Definitely a great way to do the background, but you’re right, you would need a few people to do it in one night. I hope a future update will give us a way to skip the day just like we can sleep through the night.

I strongly recommend avoiding Spritecraft for mapart and instead use MapartCraft. The reason is that SpriteCraft is made for blocks and uses a different color palette, which sometimes leads to ugly results on maps. MapartCraft has been specifically made for mapart and therefore already has the correct colors and blocks there, in addition to many useful settings and stuff.

I remember destroying 8x8 chunks in an extreme hills biome from level 80 to level 45 and making it flat, then spreading a layer of sandstone on it to make solid background...

I'm glad you liked the video and thank you for your kind words! Pixel art in survival can be a lot of fun, but it definitely takes a lot of time. The nice thing about this mod is it makes it very easy to work on it for a little bit and then come back and pick up where you left off easily. Best of luck with your project!

A good tip when making mapart in survival is to light up your area. Unless your area is in a mycelium biome, mobs will usually spawn in light levels below 8 prior to 1.18. Ever since 1.18 came out, mobs will only spawn at light level 0. It would be an encumbrance to light up an area with torches if the mapart has to be removed and rebuilt. My tip is to use redstone lamps with levers turned on. For 1.18+ you would only need 2 redstone lamps turned on per chunck (one on the corner and the other near the middle 7 blocks diagonal from the corner). This would be 128 redstone lamps plus 17 on the outer top and side depending on how you configure it. They can be placed 4 blocks above the platform (3 blocks away when mapart is finished). Redstone lamps and levers do not show up in mapart as they are transparent blocks and they give a better light than a torch. End rods are also a good transparent light source that will float in the air. If using a torch, glass would be needed to hold it up and because they give less light would require them to be placed lower. If phantoms are an annoyance, build a clear glass barrier over your mapart. This prevents contact with the open air as if you were indoors.

This is an excellent video to help with map art. With regard to choosing what colours you need, back in November 2019, I made two videos which show the only 50 colour blocks you need, then I updated this to 47 blocks, as so many new blocks came out and I discovered duel colour wood blocks. Now that the 1.17 version was released a while ago I'm now in the process of making a new video to update again, as there are a few new unique colours to add. I also hope to add some more hints and tips for better map making. Prior to this I made a 4 map Lamborghini Aventador which took me about two weeks as it was before I knew all about the colour choices. Will subscribe to you as I hope you make more map art videos for us all to watch ;0. I know that's what I'm thinking of doing soon.

having got as far as tip #3 in your video, I realise you make a very good point when it comes to cleanup: carpet or concrete powder would be a much better choice than wool or concrete, as the former can be washed away with water (alike cubfan's newspaper the Hermiton Herald in Hermitcraft season 7) or insta-mined with a good shovel, while the latter would take ages to clean up. (and glazed terracotta is not a practical option for my server, with the nearest mesa being >10k blocks away)

Everything except the Schematic mod will work for bedrock. I haven't tested the color palette of blocks on maps in bedrock specifically, but I imagine that's something that would be the same regardless of which version you're playing. I know nothing about mods for bedrock, so there might be something similar you can use, and if there is, please let me know.
