5 Tips for Learning a Language

First off, bravo you if you're learning a new language!
I have found it to be one of the most challenging yet rewarding things I've ever done.
I got my DALF C1 diploma in the French language in 2017, and I still continue to learn every day. So I thought I'd share some tips that might help you on your own journey, no matter which language you're studying.
If you have any specific questions, please put them in the comments and I will answer them :-) I also love any funny stories about language mishaps, of which I have many!!!
And if you find this interesting, you might want to check out my other video that tells the story of how I got to fluency in French: • How I Learned French (...
Other links (if we need those):
One Thing in a French Day (www.onethinginafrenchday.com/)
This is a great, short (approx 4-min) podcast with more than 1000 episodes to help you with listening comprehension. It's a young woman who lives just outside of Paris and tells little stories of a part of her day.
@FRANCE24
This is a news channel and you can watch it live for free on KZread. Watching TV news (and even weather) is great because you can hear patterns, learn how to talk about the weather, and start to recognize names and cultural references that will help you.
Comedians on KZread. I love @FlorenceForesti, even if it's sometimes difficult to get all the jokes. Look her up and try to put on subtitles to help you sound things out if you need to.
Listen to music! Search for French Pop (open.spotify.com/playlist/37i...) or jazz and follow along with the lyrics. I still do this all the time and it's helpful for idiomatic expressions and more familiar language.

this video is a little older now, but i thought i'd share a tip for anyone else who might be here, like me :) something that helps me keep my motivation up is reminding myself that even native speakers of a language are still learning their language everyday. when i encounter roadblocks while learning french, i remember all the recent times where ive had to look up an english word because i didnt know it or didnt know exactly how to pronounce it. looking at french through that lens has helped keep me from being too harsh on myself when i make a mistake :)

hello! This is such a great comment, thank you! It's so true. Language is a living thing and I like to think of it as a journey. Mistakes are just opportunities for learning along the way. Thank you so much for being here and bonne continuation !

As for communication skills I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process in English and other languages.😊

I love this. My current French teacher does this with me as well (using whole phrases) and I didn't know it was called that, but I agree, it works. I need to do more repetitions, though :-) Thank you for sharing

omg, so so so true! I have studied so many languages, and memorized endless lists of verbs and nouns and adjectives, and then, when trying to speak, been utterly unable to muster any way to make those words come into relation to each other. I just love your advice and your story.

Knowledge of grammar rules does not necessarily enable a learner to speak a second language fluently. You are absolutely right!

😊you can write down sentences or words if you like to see them, or make flash cards for new phrases. Then slowly practice them without the cards. I talk to myself in French all the time to practice things I am trying to use in conversation. Keep going! Bonne continuation 🎉

Will it take longer to learn any foreign language if you can not surround yourself with people who speak the language or have an opportunity to go to the country for awhile?

  • @karenbussen

Hello! This is a good question. I can't say for everyone, but for me, my French vastly improved when I found some meetup groups and conversation circles where I could just practice talking, which after all is a large part of what we want to be able to do when going (or moving) to a new country. We want to be able not only to ask for something at the pharmacy, but to understand the question the pharmacist asks right after we tell them what we want :-) Or to be able to make a friend, or just share ideas. For me, it's all about the exchange, the back and forth, that moment of connection. But luckily with the internet, you can find groups where you can absolutely practice talking--and I encourage you, don't be afraid to talk--go for it! Bonne continuation !

Merci for this very honest comment. You are not alone. But I have an idea for you. I believe that when we change languages, we also change personalities. So even if you are shy, when you are first practicing speaking in French, if you can imagine that you're playing the role of someone else, it might really help you. I still do this, and I often feel I am exaggerating, but the more I do it, the more people seem to really understand me and think I'm "normal." So just pretend you are your French self, and go for it ! Never be embarrassed that you are trying to communicate in another language. You deserve all the respect for studying and trying. Just go for it! Allez ! Bonne continuation ! xoxo
