5 Tips for CLUSTER FEEDING | What to Know When BREASTFEEDING A NEWBORN

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It’s witching hour, with baby screaming and wanting to eat every hour and nothing seems to be working… DON’T PANIC! It’s CLUSTER FEEDING! If you find your baby eating all the time during certain parts of the day (usually towards the end of the day) this is very normal. Whether you’re breastfeeding a newborn or bottle feeding them, this can happen, but more often than not, happens with breastfeeding. With a breastfeeding newborn, especially as a new mom or new dad, it’s easy to worry about a breastfeeding schedule while wondering “IS MY BABY GETTING ENOUGH MILK?!” Taking care of a newborn is hard work, but just because your baby is cluster feeding doesn’t mean you’re not producing enough milk for each newborn feeding. In this video, we talk about what cluster feeding is, why it happens (hello, growth spurts in babies), how it can help increase breast milk supply, and how to stay calm and confident as it happens so that as new parents in that postpartum season, having a baby and figuring out how to soothe a crying baby and putting a baby to sleep becomes less stressful and instills more confidence in your newborn care/baby care abilities!

Yes , my baby is six weeks, cluster fed for weeks now ! From about early afternoon feeding then naps on me then into 5to like 4 in morning! Intermittent sleeping but on me and as soon as I put down, wide awake and on breast. Then my husband gives my expressed milk ,then he cries for me and goes on breast for about 20 30 mins then falls asleep. My husband takes him to let me rest and he then sleeps about 3 to 4 hours!! Then in morning till lunchtime he generally will feed lightly and efficiently then doze off and I can often lay down or husband take in sling .he's working from home thank goodness!! I'm at wits end !!! I feel terrible on my husband and on baby like I'm letting him down as I can't get him to sleep in cot and am wracked with worry off Sid's whilst he's in my arms scared I'd fall asleep. A lot of advice on cluster says it on only lasts few days each go and just evening hours like 6 till 10 or 12 not all flipping afternoon and evening and wee hours !!!!!!!!! I personally think because they are on front breastfeeding it's harder to get them to lie on back in crib as it's alien to them . I don't have any family to help out and my husband is great but we are both really struggling.

Now I just figure out something. The thing is we don’t have milk enough that’s why they stay like this continuously breast-feeding. Because I breasts, I start pumping, and I’m controlling now the flow of the milk and the amount he’s drinking and if he’s full, he will not want to eat all the time. And before before sleep, he didn’t fall asleep because he was not full so he wants to continuously breast-feed know if I give him a bottle with my breast milk around 180 mL for seven weeks old baby he’s OK he will fall asleep by himself.

Just take it one day at a time. It may help if you write down on your phone what your breastfeeding goals are and why, and explain to your partner (if you have one) why it's important to you (so they don't suggest formula at 430 am when you're at the end of yourself. It does get easier when they start sleeping longer stretches as you cna get a bit more sleep xx

This needs to be more talked about because my mother in law thought the baby wasn’t getting enough milk. She made me give him one bottle of formula 😭😭😭 I was so sad for several days because I only want to nurse. I don’t know if it’s the Latina culture that wants me to give him formula so I can get up and clean but I felt like she made it seem as though it was bad for my baby to want my breast. Thank you for talking about this. I don’t understand why it’s seen as a negative thing when the baby is attached to the breast or to momma.

Living in the Latino culture I run into allot of different pressures. Now having just had baby number 3 I think most people around me have seen that I have stuck with what I know and my daughters are strong and healthy and as far as breastfeeding I’ve done it without any real issues for longer than anyone else I know. For some reason all the Latina women I know have had major issues breastfeeding and only make it a few months. Maybe due to beliefs such as this one, of giving them formula instead of letting the body catch up with supply according to the signals that baby is trying to send to mamas body. I still get allot of women shaking their heads and scolding me ,,, but I just smile and shrug it off because the results speak for themselves. Now if only I can convince them that I don’t need to have my ears covered up every time I step out the door for the first 40 days that would be great 😂

No one can make you do anything, this is your baby. You can always become strong and not let the mother in law push you around. Sorry for sounding harsh but I just feel like this should be said. Perhaps it will become a motivation to start setting boundaries because if not people will be walking all over you and your baby.

As a Latina myself yes it’s culture thing to also overfeed, sorry you MIL is ignorant a bit keep your own intuition priority even over doctors and pray to God our creator always knows the perfect way so when we feel his way is best we can ignore others comments and keep doing what is told by our creator and trust ourselves more. You held this baby not your mom or MIL or aunt you did so you will always know what’s best above all even “experts” cause this baby was given to you no one else.

Currently at week 7 and still getting some mornings or evenings of cluster feeds. I really needed this, as the lactation consultant I went to told me that if he's cluster feeding then it means he's not getting enough... which has just made me more stressed out (as I'm already doing this whole breastfeeding, followed by bottle, followed by pumping routine). Just hearing that this is a normal thing -- and it helps milk supply -- is immensely helpful.

I hate that people give wrong info to people about this. I have 3 kids and my youngest is 6 weeks and is still cluster feeding. If your baby is gaining weight and going through regular diapers they are getting enough milk. At 6 weeks my little girl is 11 lbs in 3 months clothes so yes she definitely is getting more than enough milk… I haven’t even started pumping yet. Babies cluster feed for all the reasons provided in this video. It is difficult but it doesn’t last forever and is a beautiful way to bond with your baby.

There isn't much education on this and it confused and worried me at first until I did some research on it realizing my baby is just having a growth spurt! Its exhausting and lots of tears have been shed, but I just always smile and look at my beautiful daughter and say, "Mommy is okay babygirl, I'm just tired and doing my best to take care of you. My 4do little seems to be doing both - wanting to be at the boob every half hour but then not being willing to be put down after and fusses until I pick her up again. 3 days with less than 3 hours of sleep - need more than affirmations, what else can be done other than ignoring the baby cries???

That is the only time he sleeps during the day because he sleeps like 5 min after every nursing. - we're in a vicious cycle: I feed him, burp him, let him digest, put him in his bed, he sleeps for 5 min and awakens.... Then the cycle repeats, with occasional diaper change. We tried prolonging/shortening the feeding/changing the bed/putting him in a dark room after a bath and last day feeding, nothing works. We're beyond exhausted and so is he, he gets fussy, fidgety when nursing, crying all the time, tourna his head only to the left, has digestive issues and looks like he's constipated while trying to soil the diapers. He managed abundantly to eat and use the diaper but my husband and I are beyond exhausted and the little one is only with us for a month. Help us, please.🙏🙏🙏

Exactly what I was going through this time. I feel like my baby is not getting full with my milk day and night. And I am also getting stiff neck due to breastfeeding for hours. 😭 But I am also happy that my baby is getting plenty of milk from me and I can also see how he grows and gain weight as well as a result of cluster feeding. Thank you so much for always giving us a lot of information!. 😍😘

I needed to come read these comments to help myself know I’m not alone. My baby just turned a month yesterday but my hubby is getting sent to Germany in two days and we just moved houses. I was feeling stressed out that the cluster feeding started as I was already feeling scared that I wouldn’t be able to keep myself strong thru this time while trying to keep breastfeeding. Physically and mentally these days have been so tiring but I’m happy to read that baby will come along and this will pass. Wishing all mommas the best of luck with their babies, sending you all love, strength and patience. 💗

#5 has been huge for me with my 4 week old, it's the only way to calm him when he's really losing it. Except I feel like all the healing my body did in the first weeks has been undone by all the bouncing this past week or so, suddenly I'm sore again 😅

What has helped me is breastfeeding and pumping! So when they are sleeping try pumping if you plan to bottle feed the breast milk. My baby still is able to do both and they are 5 weeks old but there are sometimes a baby may forget how to bf

@@afiyatasnova709 He spat up a fair amount daily. i feel like the bigger he is getting it's becoming less frequent. couple things that helped were burping when switching breasts, keeping baby elevated for 10-15 minutes after eating, and really watching to see if he was swallowing and truly eating or just sucking for comfort. sometimes i can put the pacifier in his mouth and he's fine because he just wants that soothing thing and not more milk.

I really wish someone would've told me to expect cluster feeding days 3, 4, & 5. I probably would've turned down the recommendation to give him formula and just pushed through. I might not have wound up engorged with clogged ducts and in unbearable pain (which led me to need to get a hospital grade pump to fix the problem) because of the decision to give formula on Day 3. Sigh, hindsight is 10/10.

Hi Bridget!!! How u doing? Though I have heard so much about baby's tummy size being small and colostrum being enough to fill them in the 1st week of birth However I have had friends and family mommies tell me that their babies cried a lot in the hospital..is that a sign of cluster feeding? On the contrary Some babies sleep a lot...they suckle for 5mins and then sleep...sometimes impossible to wake them up. What to do in this case?? Thank you

The mothers in my family made me think he wasn’t getting enough milk so I began supplementing. My supply went down as time went on and I stopped breastfeeding at 3 months. I felt terrible about it and still wished I had went longer with breastfeeding consistently. I guess I’ll just try again for next baby. ☹️

From my understanding doctors will try to convince you that you need to do things their way but when you ask them to chart or document that your request to have a vaginal birth were denied your doctor might come around to listening. My doula suggested that everything we wanted on our birth plan that was immediately denied to be documented.

A similar thing happened to me during my pregnancy. (Due to me being petite, but fortunately I knew from watching these videos that my size has nothing to do with my ability to have a vaginal birth) I talked to the nurse immediately when she asked if I had any questions, which seemed to slow down talks of a C-section. Also ask the doctor his medical reasoning for suggesting a c-section. It’s YOUR birth, don’t let the doctors treat you like an item to be ticked off!

  • @TheSpring121

    @TheSpring121

I echo to ask them to document your wishes. Ultrasounds are notorious for being inaccurate both towards big and small. Not at all accurate enough to say you "have" to have a C-section. Do you have any pelvic area deformities or had a trauma to the bones of that region? That would make a difference. But you'd know this already, bc your walk would be impacted. Big Babies FIT, they are squishy....and pelvises aren't fixed in place. Stay active and say you want to go into labor naturally and honestly it will be fine. Drs gets 15% more $$$ for C-sections and our rates of unnecessary nonmedical C-sections is truly alarming. Especially if you're BIPOC. I had a frank Breech vaginal birth and am a Doula. Sending you all the best vibes for the smoothest birth. 💞
