    @@akqjtn I'm kind of toying with updating my MY15 WRX manual to the new CVT version. Doing a LOT of city driving and a manual just makes that a pain. Just never been happy with auto's in overtaking. That whole lag between deciding to go, pushing the go pedal, and the car responding. A manual has a much more connected feeling in that.

    Not so sure about the step shifting above 30/40% you mentioned. In any mode if I get on it hard it stops step shifting and goes right into the power band and stays there until I let off. I've also never felt it step shift at all in intelligent mode. I'm pretty positive that intelligent works like any other CVT, no simulated shifting ever, Sport mimics a 6 spd (until you hammer on it at any speed or launch as you mentioned) and S# mimics an 8 speed sequential (again, until you hammer on it at any speed or launch as you mentioned) .

    Great video! Thanks for posting. I purchased a 2017 WRX CVT about 2 months now. I came out of a Crosstrek XV with a CVT so it took some time to get use to the CVT on the WRX. Definitely not the same animal. I use the intelligent setting for highway trips and the Sports or Sports # around town. It comes at a price due to the consumption on fuel using the Sports settings but after all its a sports car. I've done some cosmetic mods interior and exterior. I should mention a manual transmission was not an option since my wife and kids are not familiar with driving a stick in the event they would need to use the car. Yes, these are the practical decisions one needs to make as an adult and father. I plan to make some performance mods over the next few months. First an Axelback exhaust to get more sound (undecided between a nameless 4" vs 5" muffler) and then maybe a Cobb Stage one performance map. Stage 2 is not possible or advisable for a WRX with a CVT. I'm still considering the warranty risks with the Cobb Access Port Stage 1. Thanks again for the video. There is also a dedicated FB page for CVT owners.

    I just purchased a Cobb accesport and a axleback 5 inch muffler from Nameless. Although I want to add mods to the car I have to be careful not to stress the CVT. From my research It appears that stage 1 is somewhat safe and less risky. Beyond stage 1 in my opinion you're stressing the CVT and will need to invest in other after market mods like coolers to help the CVT. I have too much money invested in my car to risk more than what I plan to do. Its also my daily driver. I have the Subaru eye-sight package which i really like. It works great and is an added sense of safety on long drives. Can't get eye-sight with the manual. Its a personal choice between the manual and auto. I got nothing to prove at this point and besides I was driving a stick when mostly all the current WRX manual owners were wearing diapers...lol

    Guided Hand - Do you have any citations for your claim? There's a lot of superstition when it comes to CVTs. Many of the top dual clutch transmissions have had, and still have, issues. Overall, CVT are as, or more, reliable as standard or DC autos. They were even trying to use them in Indy cars, but weren't allowed as it was determined that they gave an unfair advantage to those cars. I know you hate CVTs (maybe all auto trannies), but it's your opinion. There are many good reasons to own a CTV (vs MT) WRX.

  • @MrPlaidFace

    @MrPlaidFace

    29erFreak I think the cost to replace a broken CVT is outrageous. Especially if you've purchased the car at full price. Most of the time these failures happen outside of warranty coverage. I personally jave driven CVTs in a few cars and I really did not enjoy the performance of them. Choppy at lower creep speeds, and yes the rubber band experience makes it feel like its slipping. Its just so hard to get used too. Also i didnt enjoy the surging in between the paddle shifting. It has these artificial gears to try and accompany the traditional transmission user. I just feel its a big fail and not worth it in the long run.

    Great video mate! I bought my cvt WRX a year ago when it arrives in Australia. I love it! Although my one is the first make and the first shipment that the car has the old infotainment unit as the old 2012 wrx :( I had a chance to compare the wrx with my neighbour's toyota 86( or FRS in U.S.), where we drove both cars on the same road in mountains. The 86 is not fast on straight line but really fun while you hit gas when turning into corners. However, when I fast my car into corners I always have that feeling it is not going to hold the road and may fly away. Have you or other wrx drivers had the same experience? Or maybe just me being paranoid.

    It appears some of things do on my 2018 Forester XT. Launch Control works the same way. The 30% and 40% throttle changes it to "automatic mode" as I call it, where it starts shifting no matter which I, S or S# mode i'm in. The VDC is a bit different, when we press the traction control button it just turns everything off without having to hold it down, so we don't have a traction mode. Basically, all or nothing (aside from ABS). I don't know if they are exact, but everything I'm seeing so far on the WRX CVT is the same as the Forester XT CVT.

    Trac stands for traction? I thought it stood for track? You know like a race track? It makes sense cuz when your racing you want the traction control and stability control to not be so intrusive, so it lets more tire spin……

    Would a CVT transmission car be better than an auto for a taxi driver? Or are they likely to be more expensive in the long run due to the extra costs in maintenance and repairs of the CVT transmission related stuff? And maybe would be likely to break down more often?

    It's limited so you don't blow it up. Can you change it - WHY ? With a turbo, you have to give the turbocharger time to spool down, or risk damaging it.

    The MT has advantages over the CVT. It's lighter, allows for a quicker launch, gets better mileage, is slightly quicker, cheaper, and gets better mileage. The CVT advantages are much better in stop and go traffic, no clutching required but still has a quick shift manual mode, and you can get many safety features not available on the MT. It's a much better daily driver. If you're going to take the car to the track, make serious mods, or simply have an affinity for manual transmissions, the MT is the way to go. If you use the car as a daily driver, get stuck in traffic a lot, have some condition that precludes you from using a clutch, or want the great safety features offered by Eyesight, the CVT is the way to go. The handling of the CVT car is every bit as good as the MT.

    Boost and Shutter here's my review of a dealership I test drove a WRX at. Tell me what you think should happen: Very nice staff and dealer. As a new driver, I went to go test drive a WRX CVT. I plan on getting one in the future. This test drive felt very rushed and as if they didn't even want to let me test drive it. Unlike the BMW dealer, the have someone come along with you. All I got to do was drive the car for 5 minutes and drove about 1 mile. Guy didn't even explain features of the car or anything, just sat there quietly while I drove. I really would've liked to experience the car. Didn't get to test it's performance as all I was able to do was 45 mph. The entire drive was just me driving like normal. Really, I'm serious, did not enjoy the test drive because of lack of them informing me about the machine that I'm driving and what features it has. I'd really like to come back and drive the car and spend a good 30 minutes with it. If I don't get a contacted about this, I'll just buy my car from another dealer instead that actually will spend time on me instead of making me feel like a worthless customer who isn't going to buy anything.

    I'm getting a 2018 WRX Limited CVT (oh my god) for many reasons. The car is for road driving only (no track). The CVT car will handle just as well as the MT. I can use is like a CVT (boring, but fine for in town) or I can set it to shift like a standard auto. If I want to shift, I can put in in manual mode and use paddle shifters. The shift is very quick and also work well for engine breaking. Most people don't realize that the WRX CVT has 4 modes and two of those modes have sub-modes. That allows a lot of control if you want it...or go full auto and kick back on the commute. Another advantage, for me, is that having the CVT allows me to get Eyesight. It has full auto anti-collision breaking, even in reverse. It has lane change alerts and will even steer you back into a lane if you drift (good when driving tired. I know we should never drive when tired, but we all do it..it's a fact of life). So, if you love your MT, that's wonderful. Enjoy it.

    The cvt is actually Japans choice in the STI. And actually holds 20lbs of boost continuously. Modified right, at stage 1 youd be owning the American STI any day. And this transmission isnt weak, the cvt needs to be driven a unique way. I am at 45k miles on a stage 3 tune. 335whp. It is an amazing car that gets hate for no reason other then the religious standard drivers that ruin the car community. The cvt is the motherlands chouce for this model, hate on it all you want but these guys have to do their research before bagging on a car that is actually a rocket in the awd universe if properly managed

    EmissaryGW2 I know 6 people personally with cvts specifically in a Subaru. 5 of them have been to the dealer for trans service. 5 out of 6? That number is way too high. 2 were crosstreks and 3 were legacy's. Maybe they were just the 5 unlucky ones that had theirs built on a Friday, who knows. No wrxs that I have heard of personally, but I still tell people to stay away from them, at least for now. I know they will improve over time.
