Is it a BAD idea to Buy a used Subaru WRX?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The WRX is that rally inspired AWD vehicle from Subaru. Under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged flat-4 that is producing 268HP & mated to a 6-speed manual. How well does the WRX hold up over time? This 2016 WRX has over 40,000 miles and is a good example of the kind of use a WRX would receive over time. Is it a BAD idea to Buy a used Subaru WRX?

I have owned about 10 Subarus. If you are considering a used one, be sure to do at least 2 things when looking at one. 1. take the oil dip stick out, and smell the oil. If you get any whiff of coolant, walk away. 2. Test drive the car till it gets up to temperature, then drive it a little longer to see if the coolant temperature gets higher than normal range - if it does walk away. You should also look under the car to see if it's leaking oil for older Subarus. Other than those issues Subarus are good cars.

It’s a gamble to go used. I got my 17 WRX certified pre owned. A couple months later the clutch poops out on me and had axles seals leaking. It looked fine from the factory and I attributed the stiff clutch to just being a sports car. It wasn’t until I test drove a wrx a few months down the line that I found the clutch was shot. This one he is reviewing has some induction noises which are much louder than stock which leads me to think it has some type of after market air intake/bpv/air filter. Was probably modded and then returned to stock to sell 🤷‍♂️

Joe, this is nice, with a good price for used, and seems to be in good condition with just the right additions. Many good points with all the comments. If I got an WRX, I would not mind one fixed up just like this, but in midnight blue. With some of the Subarus without the premium stereo, the Rockford Fosgate processor, amp and speaker upgrade is an available OEM accessory. I would get this on the 6 Speed over the CVT, which it harder to find, the opposite for the Corolla and Civic. I would not thrash and abuse it, so the longevity, reliability should not be such a problem, like an STi with many drivers, especially if the boost and compression is molded. Subaru has among the best AWD systems, aside from and durability problems the other negative factor is having replacing all four tires if one needs replacing. But those tires are still good to be used on non AWD cars if you can match them with tires of close tread wear. The WRX is great for people like me that don't need and want the extra performance and price of the Sti, but wants sporty, but subdued and low key. The STi OEM exhaust and shorter, short throw shifter is perfect. Bomba racing make some nice stuff for the Honda Civics, and other cars. I would also prefer the keyed ignition if available with the options I want, but on the Corolla, it only cones with pushbutton start with the options.

I ended up buying a 2020 wrx brand new, I’ve seen what others have done through KZread and I’ve also seen how they drive these cars. Personally I wouldn’t suggest buying a used wrx or sti. Not unless you want it as a project car. Most people don’t know how to maintain a Subaru wrx or sti properly, the mods are a whole other problem on top of all that. I’ve had my wrx since the 9th, I’ve done a few mods only 1 engine mod, just a boomba bpv, I have a sound system, ceramic window tint, license plate relocation kit, nameless license delete and I’m still waiting for my nameless muffler delete. I don’t plan on modding the motor for a few years, but I’m also keeping the car forever. The only other engine mod needed is a cai and a tune. I’m not interested in power gains, I just want bitchin sound lmao. I’ve had tons of fun working on this car so far, the bpv was a nightmare on the 2020 though. I had to go buy a new vacuum line just to reach the bpv. I’ve got a few other things done to the car but they’re all minor things

My steering wheel started peeling about 13000 miles in, Subaru said not covered under warranty. His hands are strategically placed to hide it. At the end of the day they’re just trying to make money off ya, I’d be curious as to the excuse they’d come up with if you asked them about it. I’d ask to take off some moolah off the asking price considering a new wheel runs around 700 bucks haha

Whether You buy a new one or a used one, they are great car. I took a risk years ago and got me a 2015 with 14000miles, and when I hit the 87k miles change the clutch, they say first time seeing a clutch service at that many miles. All You got to do is take care of them. This cars are fun to drive, and also they break necks😏. And thats a reality! But when buying a used one be careful, not everyone have the same luck I had, at that time.

At the end of the day, ALL used cars will need repairs. The biggest thing with a turbo-charged car is who owned it and how it was maintained. I'd personally never buy a WRX or STi used from a dealer. I've looked at 10+ WRX or STi's at dealers and they either needed a ton of work or were way over priced like "The Drake" pointed out. There are plenty of private sellers with good reputations deep in Facebook or Subaru forums. Just takes time and patience.

Nick Arntsen I bought a 2017 wrx premium with the sti short throw shifter package in 2016. I sold the car after two years. They hold their value well. I did some bolt on upgrades but the best thing is to get a tune stage 1. I did a cob* tune. It helps with the power drop off. If I where to buy one again I’d make sure to just add the tune and that’s all the car needs.

Cars to avoid used: GTI, WRX, Golf R, S3, Focus RS, Focus ST, Civic Si, Civic R, Evo. Any car that is quick, relatively cheap, and easy to tune draws the attention of those who tend to beat the heck out of a car and tune them to the point where one doesn't know how reliable it will be. The exception is if you know who owned it and how they treated it. If you can't afford a new one, you probably can't afford the upkeep of a used one. I wouldn't touch a used one but think they would be nice to own new.
