Two suggestions. You have a lot of hard surfaces in your place. Especially the hard ceiling and no curtains. A bit of fabric on the windows and some rugs should help with the volume in the house. The second is for your pluming issue, water leak. They make supply hoses with a check value in them. If there is a leak in the hose it will stop the flow. This is for your washer, ice maker supply line, disk washer supply line and the supply lines to the commodes. I just saw they do have a system with leak sensors in these areas. If it senses a leak it shuts off the supply to the whole house.

Agree with Bill, hard surfaces reflect... curtains, even just wooden frames with fabric stretched over them are a start. Find some videos on home studios and watch what they do for acoustic treatments.

Just remember in suburbia you probably had central AC with filters to reduce the dust and junk and carpet that hid a bunch too. Things to lessen echos are cloth wall decor and area rugs. They absorb sounds. You could also do acoustic ceiling tile in the living room and in the bedrooms. Thay will dampen a lot of sound while only taking about an inch away.

For dust plan out your garden. Look for ground covers, shrubs or small trees to act as a wind break. Compact unlaced areas. Pave paths etc. have several mats undercover. Use a song-I use Happy Birthday-to sing while wiping shoes. Very entry points on windy days. Have flyscreens and curtains on doors/windows. All entry/exits from home are quick. For the clucky play shoes put sticky felt dots on the soles/heels to cut noise. For general noise furnish with lined curtains, soft couches, cushions, small carpets, wall hanging, pictures. If it suits hang banners across the room as in classroom displays. They really cut down on harsh noises. The above garden tips work to. Use the thick insulation panel Justin Rhodes used for his cool room to place around the bottom of the house. That will cut a lot of noise to. Always use a play mat with toys. Added bonus is a quick pickup when visitors come. For sleeping the white noise machines are magic.

A professional house cleaner and author, Don Aslett (Is there life after housework?) recommends having an outside rug and an inside rug that takes up about 8-12 steps. This is the amount of steps it takes to lose the dirt off your shoes. Another thing is to have everyone remove their shoes when they enter the house. Children learn this quickly. Adults not so much!

I grew up in a farm style house about 1200 sq ft. 7 people, it is challenging. We did have an enclosed porch we called a mud room. Where you put on your snowmobile suit or your muddy boots on. Never was a fan of great rooms that became fashionable because of the echo thing, I also saw that coming.oh yes regarding the upstairs I thought if only they raised the roof with a what I call a knee wall 4 ft high, would have made it liveable. Oh yes and I figured a way to transport it. Those are the main ones I seen coming.

The dust is from the dirt road. The best way to deal with it is to let trees and shrubs grow between the house and the road. That way when cars drive down the road and stir up the dirt it gets caught on the trees and shrubs. It made a huge difference in my house before they paved the road.. I wish it was still a dirt road. The pot holes on the pavement is so much worse than the dirt road!

You can reduce sound IN your house by adding soft furnishings. (Add valour linings to your curtains, rugs to the floor, cushions to chairs). You can also get sound absorbing panels which fix o your ceilings & walls. Sound coming from outside in is harder - thicker insulation would help but not easy to do. Also a more rigid structure - again not easy as a retrofit. Are you windows double glazed and have you sealed fully round them?

Country living is very dusty. I do not live in a shed conversion but it is still dusty as all get out (I am in East Texas). I definitely agree with the need for a paved road although that is not always practical. One of the bigger issues (I find) is that my place does not have central air conditioning, which means it also does not have that nifty filter system running to every room in the house. There are any number of tutorials on youtube revolving around creating a shop air filter out of box fans and 20 x 20 central air filters. I found that a couple of those will significantly cut down on accumulated dust and as a bonus, fans to circulate the air.

When you put in some curtains, and put up some artwork the sound won't echo as much. Bathroom Ceiling fan installation even in the side of the wall could do wonders. I might do an alternative bathroom outside just in case. An ionic air filter helps a little with dust. Get some grass put in closer to the house so the dust is not as bad. Use a swiffer to clean, walmart super cheap around $40 bucks.

I've had a shed to house conversion for 5 years. I have the same complaints... the dust is quite remarkable. The maintenance is weekly as we have our dogs in the house... you can imagine I'm sure. The interior moisture was one I would add to the list even with exhaust systems in all the traditional places. I've also noticed that things seem to wear faster. Our floors already need replaced. I think it's because the space is so much smaller the same areas are used that much more...idk. I would use far more indestructible flooring.

@@BetterTogetherLife I know whereof you speak; the "smallest room" in our house has usually adequate ventilation, until the times that it doesn't. Then it's no joke. 😷 😱 😭 Thought: Because you have such deep covered porches, what about beefing up your bathroom fan? You could mount an inline fan on the porch ceiling & run the intake into the bathroom and the output away from the porch (off the back or side of the house)... one site I was looking at featured some 8" models that moved ~660-980 cfm (cubic feet per minute). Probably massive overkill, but it sure would clear out the air in that tiny space quickly enough! (If it was real overkill, smaller models are available.) The only thing I'd suggest in addition would be some sort of bug screen on each end of the ductwork.

I dont like curtains much and why bother in the middle of the woods, but a tapestry or fabric art can muffle sound without being a curtain. Also, gravel makes things dusty because likely you are driving it up then walking it in. Sweep the porch more, not that you dont, just mean it's worked for me.

your dirt is 2 problems. Hardwood floors or non carpeted floors, and even bigger is the lack of grass coverage all along your outside area. Once the yard gets fully grassed in, the dust will be lower. I live in a hardwood floored house. The dust is way worse than any other place I have lived, due to not having carpet to absorb the dust. Any drafts just pick up the dirt and distribute it around. ( opening and closing doors, or just walking in the house )
