5 Things the Church Can Learn from Crossfit

Fr. Mike points out five things the Church can learn from one of the latest fitness crazes, Crossfit:
1. In Crossfit gyms, you’re seen, you’re known, and you’re missed when you’re not there. How often does someone stop coming to church without us even noticing?
2. Crossfit is functional fitness, exercises that help you live your life. If we can bridge the gap between what we do on Sunday and our lifestyle, we will see how church helps us be more virtuous in our everyday life.
3. Crossfit has scaled workouts. Crossfit trainers ask you what you can do. What if we made spiritual exercises tailored to each individual and what they can do?
4. Crossfit is challenging. Pursuing Jesus is a challenge. What if we challenged Catholics, calling them to something higher?
5. People doing Crossfit are willing to be led and to learn. What if pastors were more willing to be leaders, and parishioners more willing to be led?

As a Catholic who does Crossfit, (or a Crossfitter who is Catholic!) I agree with all your points and I would add one other point about what makes a Crossfit community special: it’s the shared effort and suffering (!). Everyone is working equally hard, even if you are scaling the movements. We are all challenging ourselves and getting pretty uncomfortable, but persevering to get the work done to the best of our ability. So at the end of each workout we have this great feeling of solidarity: we encourage each other and the last to finish gets the loudest cheer because we are all there to become better athletes. So thanks for the video! (Oh, and as for the Fight Club reference: I am often guilty of having more evangelical zeal about Crossfit than about my faith!!! It’s definitely a work in progress to try to reverse that!)

Love it! Crossfit draws in people from all walks of life and everyone follows unspoken rules, do your best, be honest with how many reps you did or its ok to scale because you are being honest with yourself about what you can do, and its ok to go to the pain cave because it will make you better and you can get through it. As Christians life is hard Jesus said it himself that this will not be easy. But we need to do our best at following his teachings. Be honest with each other, ourselves and God. Its not easy to live a christ centered life and sometimes its just down right painful and we need to walk into that pain cave knowing that we will make it through the otherside and the lord will make us better for it in the end.

I’m ready and willing to develop functional spirituality. I’m in the process of reestablishing my relationship with God and Jesus after a long absence from the church due to living in Asia outside my home country of Canada for over 12 years now. After years of giving up, I finally just discovered a local church here in Japan that provides Sunday Mass in English 2x/month ( wish it was offered each week). I really like the CrossFit analogy! Thanks Father Mike!

This is so true, I work in the church but was also a competitive crossfit athlete for 3 years. I miss it but have yo dry it aside due to a long commute once I got married, cant wait to get back into it once life allows it. I always saw the connection and what the church could learn. There is also an evangelical crossfit organization that combines the two, I always thought there must be a way for the catholic church to do something similar.

Functional Spirituality needs to be addressed in every Catholic Church around the country. Fr. Mike, this analogy makes so much sense! Physical, Emotional and Spiritual well-being are all connected. Makes me wonder if parishioners where asked to document their spiritual encounters in a Gratitude Journal and share those with the congregation, could that make as much of an impact as seeing the results from physical exercise? Transformation is both tangible and intangible.......Thank you for your insight and inspiration!

CrossFit or being Cross fit? That is a spiritual question. Exercising one’s faith has a practical purpose: to get one ready for the next challenge God will permit. Being joyful as much as you can due to one’s confidence in God will have others notice how unique you are and how attractive is your life style. This is how we help make ourselves look fit: now this applies to the physical gym or our spiritual one. I need a break now, Coach.

Yes, I agree, Number 1 shows that attendance at Mass is very selfish in a way, that it seems each person is in his own cubicle of spirituality... although some Church people are very noisy... in gossip... I know tons of people who have gotten hurt doing cross fit for a few reasons, they did not talk to a physician before starting, they did too much or went beyond what they should have, they did some move or exercise incorrectly. Same we need to talk to a spiritual physician to make sure we are on the right path (aka priest), we need to make sure we are not testing God, We need to follow church teaching

When and how can you ask a leader for guidance in a church? I generally find priests are unavailable or only available specifically to fill their role for mass or confession. How can we identify the leaders that are willing to help us. When I have a question, I've tried asking other people, I often feel dismissed or misunderstood. I continue to ask, but it is difficult and I'd imagine most people who need help don't have the same level of perseverance. When I do find help it feels wonderful. I don't feel welcome in most churches. Is there anything I can do to help change this?

Because it's better to be surrounded by people who can give you first aid when you're injured (church leaders/members) than when you're working out alone (trying to go it solo on our Christian journey).

Imo the ability to run 5 miles is more functional than deadlift As someone who rides a bicycle, the ability to run 5 miles has improved my ability to transport myself Deadlift is probably the most functional of any weight lift but it still is beyond idealized. In lifting heavy objects I have never had such an ideal bar to grip. Actually, as a general rule of thumb, the heavier the object, the more unwieldy it will be, and the more you will need to widen your stance and squat in order to hoist it off the ground.

Agreed and please dont sit in cafe's and do your groceries in your workout clothing/underwear. The reason apart from my congenital deformities I wouldn't attend is due to the revealing workout attire worn at gyms, something to do with vanity and immodesty. Love the analogy though. 🏋🏽🏆🐨
