5 things that will wreck your van life and make you miserable

Ойын-сауық

I have met thousands of nomads over the.past several years traveling the country in my van conversion boondocking or camping. In my encounters with so many folks I have noticed that some folks just have a joy that radiates from them while others are truly miserable. In thinking about the differences in these folks, many who were seniors living on a budget on meager social security checks, I realized that there were 5 things the joyful people I met didn't do,.whether they were living in trailers, large class A rvs, tiny houses or even in cars. I am going to share those 5 things to avoid with you today in this video. Let me know what you think of my findings in the comments. And do share this video out to someone you think it would help😊

Great advice for anyone 😆. I’m only camping in my old van but it makes me happy. I don’t mind that it’s old and not perfect. It brings me joy making curtains and going to thrift stores for my van. My grandchildren love my van too. Their gifts to me are always something for my van. Your video is a good reminder for all of us to just be ourselves because that’s how God made us. 😆

I always have to giggle when I stroll past someone in the thrift store and find myself peering into their buggy. Last time I did it, a wonderful woman pulled out a lamp. "Would you look at this! It's perfect! I just moved and needed a nice lamp for my reading corner!" It was brass, and heavy, had a twisted base and a splayed feather design all in brass. She was in love with the heft, the patina, the shape and look! What a unique lampshade, too! It's paper mache with leaves on it! I couldn't stop smiling...I had donated it to a thrift store that specifically assists people who are waiting for housing. When they get their housing, they get a voucher to a few thrift stores. The lamp shade was a diy project I did about 15 yrs ago. I 'freshened' up my den and had found another lamp at a different thrift shop, so I donated that one along with a small table. Never know who you're helping.

I have seen so many videos on how to be physically comfortable in a van In fact I even did one on that topic. But I have not seen very many on this important side of van life. I think it is really critical as more people are living in vehicles and so many are judging people for doing this. I am glad to hear that although this video wasn't what you expected you weren't disappointed.

My in laws celebrate 63 yrs today, April 22. Earth day. Migraines debilitated her to the point of blacking out. There was no disability for that in the '60s. So Pop worked as a skycap for NY Port Authority & she was an at home mom. But she'd babysit, sew, bake to supplement the income. All us sisters-in-law have rotated dishes, tables, blankets, everything throughout the generations. It's truly a beautiful thing (and quite hilarious) to gather and see plates that we've regifted among each other. Ooh!!! I finally got the turkey plates!! Thank you! Who got the leprechaun mugs this year? Yay, Chris!! 🤣 ...ummm...what exactly IS this?? No, no, no! You're holding it upside down! Ohh!!! It's the ceramic elephant punch pitcher! (I REALLY wish someone would remember the story behind it🤷‍♀️🤣) Grateful for the memories we're still making while they're here 🥰 That's 60+ yrs of love right there!

Thank you, Carol. This is a very timely message for me to hear today. We’ve been in the same rig for over five years, longer than we’ve ever lived in any home other than during our growing up years. Sometimes when we see bigger, better and newer, or when we see snowbirds leaving and heading to their sticks and bricks, we feel those pangs of wishful thinking. You’re so right, it’s all about perspective and whether our needs are being met. Things could be so much worse so thank you for addressing this topic.

Because folks have a big fancy rig and go back to a sticks and bricks doesn't mean they are happy. Just remember that a little with peace of mind is so much more valuable than a mansion filled with strife.

@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 thanks! I couldn’t agree more. Would I like more kitchen/living space? Yes. Do I really need it? No. What we have meets our basic needs and for that, I am grateful. I also appreciate you saying not to receive the negativity of those who want to make us feel “less” simply because we are nomads. Again, something I needed to hear. Thank you for addressing these issues.

That's a good thing when you're a DIY and you make your own home on wheels because it's unique cause you're the only one that has that particular rig. That's been individual instead of buying a manufactured one, and you have 1 and 10 other people have the same exact 1 as you do. You don't want that make your own.

I often compare our campervan to others, but I include the negatives of having their van and bring myself round to preferring our set up. We didn't put cabinets in, we have tubs under the bed. The vans that are decked out like a home look really cozy, but we wanted to save on space and weight. We have lots of space to move around. We go on month long trips, so space for 2 people in a tiny home is important. I'm proud of our innovative, space saving, cost saving alternates to the luxurious vans I've seen on youtube. The other was the RVs I think, it would be great to have that much space. Then you can only go to official campsites, you can't fit in a normal parking space and you can't stealth park in the city. I like your points, I try to do all those things you said. I agree all of them can change your mood about yourself and your lifestyle choices. It's your life, not anyone elses. It's none of their business and not their problem. If it works, there's nothing to complain about.

You're absolutely right, don't compare your vehicle with other people's vehicles. That's true when you do see tourists. It's like going to a open house. You think the house is how they live in, they clean the house up? Change the furniture around to make it look good so they can sell the house. Well, the same with Van Torres when you look At Van Tours. always clean and tidy when you actually live in a Van full-time. It's never clean like that. I know because I live in my vampire time. And I'm only part-time and my Van gets dirty fast so when you see tourist events. It's fake because I'm not clean like that in my life.

Wise words for a sweet lady. You brought to mind that I was traveling and had stopped at a campground I had been to several times. I was in a 20+ year old pickup I had bought new and it still looked new with a camper shell with my camping gear from decades of camping. A lady I met that was camping out of a rented car with a tiny tent asked me if I was homeless. I was shocked. I had just shared with her the extensive circle of travel I had done in two of our larger states while meeting friends and family on the circle. I can't help but wonder if her intention in asking me that was to shame me. Sometimes people can be so strange.

Glad I'm glad I'm not the only member of the 'Old Home Folks' My definition of update: changing the lightbulb from 40 to 60 watts😆 Changing out pansies to petunias in the pot🤣 Changing my wreath from wintergreen to summer florals☺️ I've learned to fix or replace quite a few essential things from KZread (dryer belt, vacuum cleaner, disposal, springs in my washer, thermostat in my freezer, sprayer on my sink, spout in my tub, faucet, serpentine in my truck, caulk, grout the tub, seal tile, replace hinges, replace the connectors in the lights in my kitchen. Just so many things. Some things, I've had to save up and get a pro (like pumping my septic or replacing my HVAC), but for the smaller (but still could have been expensive) jobs, it took some effort, but I'm glad to be a student of KZread University! My sweet tri-level split (a throwback to the '70s era) hits 50 yrs old this year! The gentleman who had it built also built three of the 11 homes (including his) on our little street. His son and widow live two houses over. They've since been lead tested, radon tested, termite tested, and are all standing strong. Mine has had bathrooms added and removed, has housed college kids, bachelors, wedding parties (my backyard is shaded by three beautiful elms and has thickets where rabbits and chipmunks reside.) The 1970's era two-car garage was enclosed, carpeted and vented about 20 yrs ago. My first holiday dinner seated 21 people comfortably with enough room for the cake & pie table in one corner, the Christmas tree in another and two long tables. It was great! Yeah, it might look odd from the outside. But when I think back to when I would drive past houses like that, while I was living in an ant infested, drafty, mildewey rental that was condemned, I'm SOO happy with my 50 yr old prize. Funny when my grandpa lived in the little 2 bedroom duplex we would visit in the summer, nothing matched and everything was already at least 30 yrs old. Nowadays, it's called eclectic 🤣

@@sylviajones4907 I have a thought I still giggle about. It's not about a mobile home, but it is about a home. We moved from NY to GA in '94. Our first home was a sweet little ranch. Needed a few odds and ends, but great bones. Well, me in my omnipotent brilliance decided I wanted to paint to freshen things up. Budgetista that I am, I went straight for the Oops! Paint @ Home Depot. It was a nice soft light green...so I thought. That's what color the blob was on top. And there were two cans!! WooHoo! Jackpot! I donned an old T-shirt, old pants, covered everything & went to work. I did our little den and the bathroom. The paint was no odor, too! Man! I was KILLIN' it. Hubs was THRILLED!! Not just because of the price , but because I was able to finish the den and bathroom before he got in! By nightfall, it had dried and we're settling in... I hit the lights...WHAM!! The room lit up like a construction site at night! The whole room glowed in the dark!🤣🤣🤣 But wait! That meant--yep!! The bathroom, too! The big joke was that we didn't have to turn on any lights to find the bathroom at night🤣 It was a fluorescent soft green, kind of like a Granny Smith apple being zapped by lightning😆 So THAT'S why the big cans were a buck! I did redo the bedroom and bathroom, but we were so doubled over w laughter our sides hurt! What a way to 'lighten the mood.' baDumBUMP!! I'll be here all week, folks!😁

Thank you, Carol, these are good lessons to live by. I used to always compare myself to others and believed I wasn’t “as good as” other people who had a better life. I grew up poor and struggled throughout my 20s as a single mom. I often felt less than. Then I read Philippians 4:11 “Not that I speak of want, for I have learned, in whatsoever state I’m in, there I will be content”. It really helped me to stop comparing myself to others and to be content with the blessings I had already received.

Not by a long shot, but it's a home. I love to travel. I love meeting new people. My Social Security won't begin to cover the cost of living once I retire. No matter. I bought a used can to practice living out of part time so I can affird to travel. I intend to do a no build build in a cargo van, eventually using what I have. They say you can't take it with you. I disagree. We can take our experiences with us. My dream is to become that eccentric old lady people aren't sure how to take!

Beautiful lady,I drove semi tractor trailers for year's. I am comfortably living in a van. It's much better than living in the cab of a semi. I have family members that are at the end of their lives. My van allows me to have my own place while I try to help them move on to the here after. I am a truck driver and I am thankful for my experiences living in a tractor-trailer. Much more comfortable living in the van and practical. I don't have to live this way but it works for me. I want the freedom to move as I please. I have never considered what people think of my rig. don't care.

But live what makes you happy, it's how I always live my life. Do you and only you that's what matters. The rents are high and it's depressing to see many people not being able to afford an apartment. It's admirable to see those who live the van life. Be strong 💪🏼 to all the vanlifers❤

Thank you for such wisdom we all need to keep in mind to be content. I especially love seeing all kinds of builds, especially the DIY ones for full timers in a minivan or van. It can take a lot of thought and ingenuity, and so much learned when doing and spending time on the road. I had to buy my minivan before selling my car or insurance would drop all my insurances, so it is modest but taking time to get the floor and bed right so I can be comfortable and fit it out over time, with plans to take it full time at some point. I could get high top envy but it also has its pros. My wants are to have a simpler, more peaceful life.
