I have a 2011 x drive but I’m a 89k no issues

I love being seen driving a bimmer. It says something about status and lifestyle. It’s not for everyone. You see Honda’s and Toyota’s all day and it just another shmuck on the road.. when I’m in the bimmer it gives me that special feeling.

You are absolutely correct. I've owned three BMWs 1Jeep 1Geo 1Vet 10x bikes and nothing turns head like a BMW no matter the year.

Thanks for your unbiased opinion about your BMW. On my 540i I replaced the water pump, thermostat, Rotors/pads, spark plugs, valve cover gaskets, battery, and tires. Runs very well after 172K miles and 18 years. No complaints about the interior or the exterior. Based on my experience I have the highest regard and respect for BMWs.

Same it’s just a matter of keeping up with the maintenance and being able to identify what’s wrong with it.

I own a bmw myself, while most "enthusiasts" complain about a little bit of plastic here and there in japanese cars... I'd rather have some plastic interior pieces than plastic engine and cooling components that tend to fail. :)

Had a E36 328i, E36 M3 and E82 135i. BMW's use of plastic over and over despite constant failures and re-releases of water pumps with metal impellers is infuriating. "Ah right, the water pump failed because of a plastic impeller! We made one with a metal impeller for your car to replace it...but we're putting a plastic impeller in the next gen cars. :D" Sold the 135i and split the money into a Toyota Avalon and Honda S2000.

Love the S2000! Super fun on autoX, love that the roof drops, love that it has a beautiful silhouette. However, it is so much slower than the N54 cars in a straight line. :( Sounds a lot lamer too.

Mama mia, I'm glad I'm not trying to keep a BMW on the road any longer. The only things that've broken on my 07 Accord since I bought it new is one electrical bus & the off-on switch on the cruise control. 111K miles so far. When we want the ultimate driving machine experience now, we rent a BMW thru Enterprise.

owned a fiat punto from new a 2013 model with the 1.2 petrol engine, the gearbox lost 5th and thrid gear after 15000 miles the front suspension failed after 21000 miles traded it in for a bmw 120d m sport and have had no problems with the bmw so far and i am in love.

Wel Thats the first issue with fiat. I had Fiat Grande punto from 2010 gear box issues and spare parts are damn expensive it was better to sell the car for 2500 euros than spend on that junk

For the blower motor, you typically can fix it with some rust penetrant and spinning it by hand a little to work it in. The main things to keep in mind with that are: 1) you DO NOT have to remove the glovebox to reach it, just the panel below and 2) there's a tab on the front of it (engine side) that's under the cable bundle you have to life to pop it out.

Appreciate watching your videos Justin. I own a 2006 BMW 325i. I bought it from a dealership for a surprisingly good price. It didn't move from the dealership lot quickly and hence the good price. I had been bought in Germany by an American serviceman knowing he would be shipping to America at some point so it couldn't be CPO (Certified Pre Owned). Save $1500. The dealership still treated it as a CPO car - service, new tires, fluid changes, etc. Save $1500. The 3rd reason for the good prices was the original buyer bought this BMW in typical euro style. Not many fancies like heated leather seats, garage door openers and such. The only 4 options this E90 possessed were sport pkg., automatic trans, fold down rear seat and backup sensors. Perfect for me as my only must was the sport package. I didn't need to shift in this sedan as I also have a Z3 with manual trans. The car has been flawless and now has over 82,000 miles. After owning six 3series BMWs, this was the keeper. It does everything in such a balanced way for a daily driver that I have no desire for a new one. Sure there are faster turbo Bimmers and M models, but this normally aspirated E90 has presents plenty of fun past about 3750 on the tach!

Very informative and I particularly like the the addition of the pictures of the parts and the sound clip. Well done.

I have a 2010 535i with 96k miles and I've had the water pump and the ignition col issues. For the most part I've enjoyed this car which I've had for almost two years. I thank yo for all the information and I look forward to watching and learning as much asi can about BMWs.

Great video, recently sold my 325i with 99k miles way too many issues, window regulators went bad, waterpump started leaking, blower motor stop working, 02 sensors went bad, thermostat started sticking then i was losing washer fluid, plastic coolant hose got brittle anf cracked on a roadtrip 400 miles from home and an oil leak. all this happened between 70-90k miles. I bought my 06 Acura TL Aspec a few years ago with 77k miles on it, it now has 130k and I have not replaced anything other than a battery, brakes, and fluids. BMW's perform well but, are made of shit, I will never buy another one.

No, blame the European EPA for all that plastic crap. In the 90s they mandated that all cars manufactured in the EU be mostly recyclable - hence the plastic junk you get in their cars, and hence the destruction of German car reliability.

Great video, Justin! In October 2019, I acquired my son's 328i N-52 E-93 with 70,000 miles. The local shop analyzed it for $145. These are the shop's findings (include 7% tax and "shop supplies"): (1) Replace front struts for $1,240. (Note that the tension struts have already been replaced, so this new repair is strut assemblies and mounts.) (2) Replace valve cover gasket for $723. (3) Power steering flush for $200. (4) Replace air and cabin filters for $240. (5) Replace front brakes and rotors for $709. (Note that back brakes have been repaired twice in 70k, but this is a first repair for the front brakes.) (6) Replace the cupholder for $183. (Note that a genuine BMW cupholder is a $70 part. It is held in place with two screws. I'll replace it myself). (7) Fix a small dent for $1,200. Having owned a Chrysler minivan (then owned by Daimler) for 20 years that never breaks, these repairs and prices are shocking. ;-)

Great video Justin. Anyone with an E39 body (5 series) and I think older 3 Series too should also be aware that the header tank for the radiator is made of plastic and becomes brittle after a while due to heating and cooling. Eventually it will split and dump your coolant on the road. This means a new radiator which will be pricey - £600 fitted for me, that's around $750.

Great video! All good information. I have a 2008 528i, just turned 100k miles. Bought it at 95k. Put 6,000 miles on it in 2 months. Runs like a champ! From the desert to the mountains. Handles very well on turns, and does well in climate change. We traded from a 2010 535xi twin turbo, which a bit much. We were never out on the open road enough to open it up and take advantage of the turbo. Essentially they were the same car, less the turbo and navigation. I'm sure a couple other things as well. After watching your video I'll begin buying these parts ahead of time, so I'm not slammed with costs when the time comes. I'm the second owner. Prior owner did all the maintenance at the dealer, and on time. We'll follow suit. Thanks for the tips!

I never understood why people insist on OEM parts all the time. If the manufacturer' part was so good, why didn't it last past 80k. That amount of mileage is nothing for a Japanese car, same should be for any car by today's manufacturing standards.

Also have the '06 330xi. Bought it in 2015 with 89k miles. Now has 140k. Every thing you listed happened to me except for the blower motor. Probably cuz it's dry in Utah. Water pump and thermo were $1400 at the dealer. Coil I did myself - replaced them all at the same time as the plugs. Another one is the oil filter housing gasket. Dealer wanted $500 - I did it for $20. :) The absolute worst though is when the starter goes out. You have to remove the intake manifold and you're most likely going to break one or two of the PCV hoses. Took me 8 hours. But only cost me $250 - dealer wanted $1300. Next is the radiator hose that holds the temp sensor. $70 for the hose and $30 for the sensor. And finally - the wiper fluid tank is leaking. Filler hose needs replaced and either the tank is cracked or one of the pumps is leaking. Waiting for warmer weather to look. But I still love the car!

K Hud I have 06 330i. Bought it the same year. Original water pump went out at 145k and starter went out at 150k. I did these my self for under $400. My coolant hose with temp sensor seems to start to leak randomly but rarely. My coolant plastic hose connector that attaches to housing broke because of age. The plastic was yellow and powdering in my hand. I replaced that with metal piece so problem fixed. Changed valve cover gasket at around 120k. Still original coils. Changed all oils on time. Only problem I can't fix so far is the oil cap, changed it 4 times. Its a design flaw and it always leaks a little and falls on exhaust. Apart from that car drives like new and sitting at 185k miles today. No engine or transmission problems. I'm thinking of changing all coolant hoses. I feel like they will powder or break and get pushed in engine because of age. The car requires maintenance but it'll last as long as you take care of it.

Weltmeister No, no. Nothing wrong with new technology. They simply don't make them last at all. They just put in new tech that's all. The reliability thing is a hoax. Japanese, British or American cars can be just as long lasting.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but there's a world wide crisis going on. The impact is huge, and it also affects ... cars. Just look at how many new Toyota's get recalled. Is that much better ? I thought they were getting better and better. Seems to be a flaw in that theory, right ? Or, it was always crap, but now it gets more in the media ? Whatever it is, these Japanes reliable cars, I don't know if that is true.

That's also more of a moder trend. In the 80's and 90's, people would drive longer with a new car. I would say even double the time, like 8 years or so. While now, 4 years is a lot already. Don't you think the industry notices that behaviour ?

It's true. I brought a 2004 BMW 318i 3 years ago with 70k miles. Literally after owning it for 3 weeks the cooling tank cracked. Fixed that, then the airbag light came on, then an oil leak. The car never failed to start and never left me stranded but it did cost me a lot. I sold and have owned 2 Honda's since. One for 1.5 years and never had an issue. Have owned an Accord since January and never had an issue (touch wood). Japanese cars are the way to go....

Had a Nissan Primera. Never ever wronged me. But the problem with Japanese cars, is that they look like shit and doesn't feel so nice. Both interior quality, and ride feel.

BMW engineers are clever swindlers. All of the parts that can only be obtained through their dealerships always fail prematurely and usually cost a large fraction of the vehicles overall value to replace and install.

Dude. His car is '06. A 10 years old car is bound to have some issues. I owned for 3 years a '05 E90 320i and except annoying little things like car window elevator in the back failing (costed pennies) or fan resistor going bad had exactly 0 serious issues. A very reliable and lovely to drive car.

Ridiculous, almost all of the OEM parts are available online for good prices. Most of the cost of repairs is labor anyway. I have had 4 BMW's now and the first one (the oldest by far) was the only one that was a true money pit -- due to oil leaks. The others were about what you would expect from 10 year old cars. If you can't take the risk of unexpected repairs, you shouldn't own a used car in the first place.

I think it's okay. My dash sometimes doesn't display properly (some of the pixels won't light up) and it also pulsates when I turn on heated seats.

Hey Justin, I've just bought my first BMW. Like yourself in the beginning, I have no idea what I'm doing. I just wanted 2.0L up front and RWD at the back. Your videos have given me a long shopping list but I also appreciate that you can fault find by simply listening to how the engine is running. BMW's seem to give the driver constant feedback about how they are doing. Thank you so much for all of this content. It's super valuable for me moving to a big saloon from a small 'learner' hatchback.

Just purchased a 2014 328i awd station wagon with 80056 miles. I live in michigan. So many info videos on You tube. most will scare a person out of buying a used bmw. Glad you cleared that up in your video. If you are considering a bmw, get a use car inspection from a Bmw dealership.

I owned a 2008 535i and everything mentioned on the video went wrong with that car. Including having to replace all the fuel injectors. When the water pump failed on the highway I was driving in heavy traffic going 65 mph - the car engine shut off and lost power - I was able to guide the vehicle to the side of the road and avoided an accident. But this is very alarming that the car reacts to this failure in such a manner. The fuel injectors are $200 each and the newer versions arent backward compatible to the older generation - this is a problem and I found out they were version 11 when I had mine switched out. Great car to drive but incredibly expensive to repair and unreliable.

My 335i has 220k miles on it and it works perfectly fine

I bought a scratch & dent model 2011 BMW 328xi with 30k miles in late 2017. I've put 30k more miles on it and have only had to replace a battery and a coil. All the electronic interior features work, in fact the only damage to the interior is the outside cup holder; they never hold up very long. I have never regretted buying it! Best car I've ever had so far!

Can you come with me when I buy my BMW; I live in Michigan too! Lol

Thanks to you, I'm really interested in 3 series, despite the issues they go through.

E90 320d. 2007. 117k miles. Driver fairly brutally. Almost 115k miles on factory original everything. Minus discs. Pads. And tyres. Only issues are abs sensors wearing out every 2 years causing the whole traction/abs to turn off fully. Otherwise me and 2 or 3 friends with different bmws from the same era have no issues. Your video is about super rare issues that never happen tbh.

took an bmw 320d, audi a4 and lexus is 300h for a test drive. preferred the lexus. Lot more interesting inside, better ride quality too. Pick my Lexus up on Monday :)

Sort of like how you showed us how the engine sounds, maybe you could also tell us what happens when the water pump fails, etc.? What if the car is driving when that happens? Thanks Justin for presenting your helpful and informative BMW buyer tips. Plastic is here to stay I think because it actually offers several advantages over traditional materials; a couple of which are higher corrosion resistance and lighter weight. Engineers are continually working to develop a family of plastics with enhanced properties for specific applications so I expect to see even more plastic engine parts in the future..

Great video, I have a BMW X5 and I love my car. As you stated I did replace my water pump in this vehicle and a rear brake light. However I purchased and extended warranty and I was covered. These are really great cars they will last you a long time just ensure you get your oil change on time and keep up on your maintenance.

OOHHH, so it IS a good idea to warm your car up before driving it!

Great video. I just bought an '06 650i convertible for 1k and it runs great. It does have a small crack in the rear left wheel causing a slow leak, needs a new windshield, burns oil and leaks oil and the codes indicate 3 cylinders are or have fisfired. Also, I guess it has the coolant tube issue but so far, my coolant level has been steady. Thanks again for good concise video sir.

Ignition coils also fail on audi and vw, especially the 2.0 liter engine with or without turbo.

Don't forget about the leak from the oil filter housing gasket - very common, as well as the leak from the megatronic sealing sleeve. Still, I love my 325i (2006). Had it for 10 years and it has 74, 500 miles. Very sweet machine.

i think i'll stick to looking at beemers, not owning them...

2003 e46 The dealer replaced all the coil packs free under a recall during a maintenance inspection at about 30k miles back in 2007, didn't have any issue they just did all 6 along with a sub frame inspection and installation of extra grounding wire in the tail light. 101k so far and nothing untoward, usual suspects like expansion tank, valve cover gasket and control arm bushings, but I consider that maintenance and acceptable for such a high quality driving experience. Having to change rotors with pads was different for me but it keeps the brakes like new...

Thoroughly enjoy driving my Beem! Purchased my 2011 328i N52 /E90- 02/18. I'm the 2nd owner- Currently with 97K miles... Still has air bag codes that need reset due to the sensor underneath the seat. Had BMW service the blower motor recall for the wiring issue. I had to replace both fuel pumps due to a crack along the plastic on the passenger side pump. So I just replaced both since the price really wasn't much more @ $600 total. My scanner read a misfire code on cylinder 2 so I gave it a tune up. I Replaced 6 plugs with Bosch double platinum, K&N replica air filter/ non- oiled for MAFS sensitivity, cabin filter, 7qts Castrol Syntec blend, new oil cap with gasket and oil Filter @ $137 Total. Replaced RVM housing clamshell for $28. So far I'm in $765 after 1 yr. I also add Lucas fuel treatment every 3rd fill up using Super 91 octane fuel only. Next up--> ATF drain & fill. Any suggestions on which ATF oil is best to use ?

Adding to my earlier comments about my '06 325i, I bought it with 35,000 miles and it now has over 82,000. Basically only oil changes and routine maintenance during the 8 years I've owned it. Only a recall with the Takata (based in Japan) driver side airbag. Took a half an hour at the dealership and cost nothing. Over a one year period (last year) I made 21 round trips from Springfield, MO to Chicago, IL. Small enough to be nimble yet heavy enough for long trips made this the most fun long-distancer I've owned. People comment that it looks like a "new BMW". It's fun to tell them it's soon to be 12 years old. I've owned several Hondas and Toyotas over the last 40 years and their body styling just doesn't last as long. (yet I do love my Toyota Tundra)

Hi...I have a 04 X3. Six speed...this car has been in our family since 09 at 50,000 lease return...it was gifted to me at 175,000 and it was meticulous maintained with amsoil...I had race engine shop and love cars...I bought one new car in my life and still own it 1973 pantera...currently getting four cam cobra transplant. But the X3 is really a great car..I’ve done drilled rotors...new coils..delete secondary air pump and removed rear cat and both silencers...it’s really not much faster although at least 100 lbs lighter...but the noises are awesome especially rowing the gears as I live in mountains of western North Carolina Nest is bilstien B6 upgrade....then new front end components...all of the things you warn about have been done All coil and irridum plugs ...vanos resealed and valve cover gaskets should be coordinations so you are not doing two partial services..good luck on yours and I appreciate your video

Own a 2010 BMW 750 I with 95,000 milles on it. On cold mornings my car will not respond to the push button start, and now more frequently the soft close doors will malfunction causing the doors not to close at all. I have a 2008 Honda Accord and I have better peace in mind of driving that than my 7 series on cold days. Love my 7 but jeeze..the engines rock solid but the electronics are hallow if you get my drift.

Yes, ignition coils. What I learned is that when you replace one, you might as well replace them all.

Ignition coils can even fail on a Toyota! Ask me how I know! (It is, however, a very minor and easily corrected failure)

Oil filter housing gaskets seem to be common and misdiagnosed on these. Bolts are single use for the housing

I recently purchased a 2001/325ci. The ticking this good video described is exactly the engine tick I hear. This car hasn’t been driven only short stop and go for a few years. 92k miles. It seems ago stop aFter It’s driven for 15-20 miles. Also filling up with. Regular unleaded. I’m going to run a couple tanks of Shell super premium to see if this helps.

I'm 18 and I just bought my first BMW 328i 2007 (140,000). I've had to replace the coils, replace the cabin filter, engine filters, and my signal light has a slight short in it. Other than that, car is 100% operational and so far, I don't regret my decision with this car! :)

Rob Mine had 145,000 for $4500. It's gonna have it problems but it was a good deal once I got all the problems worked out. It was a pretty penny to spend, but I do not regret the decision. If I were you, and I really wanted it, I would make the deal.

Oh yeah , and my engine had a bunch of leaks in the engine. Did a smoke test and seen a list of leaks. $1500 for that repaired, then I did my own tranny service which had to buy a filter and the plastic under carriage had to be replaced which was expensive. And my has connecting the water pump to the motor busted. So that was another $380 bucks for the hose and plastic piece. But once all your kinks get worked out, it's a wonderful machine

My parents have a Mitsubishi Lancer X from 2007, it is reaching almost 10 years and they never had a single component fail. They did change tiers a few times...

I am bmw owner and this video is very informative and straightforward. I have same issue. Nice to drive but a lot of maintenance involve. Engine leak is very common for bmw

So everything is made of cheap plastic, but cost more to replace. Great design BMW, glad I bought a Lexus instead.

After watching multiple BMW maintenance video's I think I'm good. It seems like their great at the beginning and a nightmare after. I believe German engineering is staring to fall behind cutting corners and using their old reputation to get them by.

That last sentence HIT IT ON THE HEAD. Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts will tell you all NEW models from 1995 on were crap. Now if it was a 1992 model that continued until 1998 it would be fine but any new model was DELIBERATELY built with the bean counters cost cutting as PRIORITY. Before that, things like the W140 chassis were built with an almost open budget. And they WERE BRILLIANT. Still complicated BUT well made. Niw they're just running on BRAND PRESTIGE ALONE. Because the quality went 25 years ago. Or even longer for BMWs most likely.

These were done in my 2007 328xi wagon starting at 10 year mark. 2017 Valve Cover (Plastic) and gasket and Eccentric Shaft Sensor. $2200. Or gasket only $850 ( was told the plastic cover would eventually crack so I replaced it ) this item caused me huge headaches and due to oil leaks which fouled up a my ignition coil and spark plug. Oil filter gasket $500. Drive Belt Tensioner: $625. Told that if it failed that my engine cold be destroyed. Front door lock actuator $500. New Starter installation: $1350. ( probably due to my short distance driving ) I tried doing some work myself but it’s pretty limited. Plastic parts is the main problem. I’m primarily a short distance driver but the climate I live in is moderate and I park my car in a carport. So far have not needed to have my water pump / thermostat or internal fan motor replaced. Love the way the vehicle handles and drives and it’s cheaper than buying a new one for sure. These prices are a few years ago so probably more now and include labour which is a huge expense.

Power window regulators going bad in mine. Had the rear passenger go out last year and just yesterday the driver's side rear window regulator went bad when I was on my way for window tint 🤦🏾‍♂️

I have a 2006 automatic BMW 330i. I don't drive it very often, just to the grocery store and take the kids to the doctor and school and such. Recently, my back right power window got jammed. It was open a little bit and I wanted to close it all the way. It wouldn't go back up so I powered it down all the way to bring it back up. That was the mistake. Once it was down, it stayed down. I looked into the space for the window, and I think the window fell into the door panel. I've tried slight pounding against the door to get it back on track, but no go. I'd like to fix it myself if I can, but don't want to mess around with it too much that I'll break it! Other than that, car works like a dream. I haven't really tinkered with it too much to find out what else it can do, but I'm happy to just own it. Hopefully nothing else starts breaking down anytime soon.

I have an '06 325i, bought it about 3 months ago and exactly 30 days after I bought it the air compressor shit the bed. Not sure what happened but the pulley came off and the whole serpentine belt came off while I was driving. Luckily I was close to home. Anyway I went with an aftermarket Denso air compressor which was about 400 dollars, our mechanic only charged 200 for labor. I think OEM would have been over 1000 just for the part.

@Mario An A/C compressor shouldn't shit on a 10 year old car (ESP with under 90K miles!). It still works on my 1997 Trans Am, and that's approaching twice the age of this guy's BMW. That's the logic.

8 years old and 20k miles? and things just start breaking down... you should really think twice about those 'real' miles... I drive casually, and still do about 6-9k miles a year, mostly in the city, maybe 1-2 highway trips a year. 20k on an 8 year old car is a big red light in my oppinion

+Daniel Costache (Waterspark) im skeptical about that stuff but the previous owner of the car was elderly and wasn't driving much. Besides that coil pack, the only other thing was the blower motor which is related more to age than mileage with the corrosion. But you bring up a good point about the miles on a car being too good to be true.

have a e90 2008 328I and got it around 59k. Currently i'm at 97k and the biggest known issues are the value cover gasket (was surprised when i didn't hear that). I already had mine replaced at 65k and it's starting again at 97k. Replaced coils and had one rear window regulator break. everything else been good to go. my wife 2006 325i e90 she got it at 30k (in 2008) and its at 169k and she replaced valve cover gasket at 130k replace water pump at 160k starter at 105k and no coil issues since she changed them with her plug change. Today both her rear window regulator broke at the same time (weird i know). but all in all they are great cars and these are just typical maintenance like on any car so i don't know why people bitch and complain about how unreliable bmws are but i had other cars like shit fords/dodges and Chrysler and man what a nightmare they are.

magincap70 if those miles were true basically he's having all these problems because the sat too long and is having a dry rot effect.

The valve lifter part is so accurate! I drive a 08 335i and my car does this occasionally in the morning before I pull off. It will sound like a diesel for about 20-30 seconds and then stop! Driving the car a long distance is the way to stop it!

ignition coils may be cheap, but they're a PITA to get too. it should be a 3 minute job but turns out to be 30 mins to an hour cause of all the crap you gotta take off to get to it

2015 BMW 750LiX. At 52000 or so miles the right front wheel bearing had to be replaced. Other than that, -0- problems.Got smashed in the rear end right after buying it a few years ago. 2009 Toyota Corolla struck me at a very good rate of speed. Toyota completely destroyed-parts all over the road. BMW had under $15,000 in damage. Amazingly strong. We now call it the Tiger Tank. Extremely safe car. Much to consider with all the distracted driving going on.Excellent Video, Justin. Please make more.

2008 528xi, 148,000 miles in mid-Michigan. Just had thermostat replaced ($190 Stant + 210 shop costs). The next day it started running rough, DTC was for #4 misfire. Replacing plugs ($54 for 6 Iridiums) and #4 coil pack ($65) today in a very cold garage. Sounds like I should plan on water pump next. Love the car but it is expensive to maintain.
