5 Streaming MISTAKES That Hurt My Growth!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Contrary to popular opinion, I am not perfect, and that means I make mistakes as well, in fact, this entire channel is founded on me making mistakes, learning from them, and then passing those lessons on to you.
Today I want to pass on five really dangerous mistakes I’ve made in the past 6 months while trying to grow my stream that have actually caused me to lose viewers. After this video, you can avoid these pitfalls, and grow your stream. Let’s go!

Should You Do Special Event Streams?
I used to do 1 event stream a month, pain week, painting streams, Christmas events, amazon buying streams, and so many other events, but a month or so ago I did a charity event and the community raised $13,856USD which is amazing but I was so drained after the charity event and how stressful it was that I took a break from big events.
The absence has been really noticeable, event streams bring a lot of excitement, a lot of community building happens during special events, and they also start a lot of community memes, a side product is also a lot of revenue from event streams but that shouldn’t be your focus.

How To Pick The BEST Games For Your Stream
I realized was causing a lot of issues was that I have been so focused on growing my stream that it has actually hurt my growth.
After gaining 900 plus followers during the trending period of Valheim, I became so focused on looking for the hot new game that will get me exposure, or only looking to play games that I know are good for growth and, sure they are enjoyable but these aren’t always the best for nurturing your community, that core who enjoys your content.
I’ve been incredibly nervous to try new things like new smaller Indie games, or older games that aren’t good for exposure, and that is where the big problem starts. Those games are so much fun to play with your community and help make amazing community memes.
When I played Detroit Become Human, I got almost no followers from the category but the number of in-jokes, memes, and fun moments that came from those streamers was insane, like the fact that chat now thinks I can’t pull off quick time events to save my life, or that I hate bus stops….
The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

    Hey there Eljay massive fan and thanks for the video once again you're a legend. I don't know if you remember this from a couple streams ago, but would really love to hear your input on Dixper. Really interactive but not sure if it will be for everyone. Think it is a great way to involve communities though so really want to see more people use it. Thanks for all the stuff you doing mate.

    WOW! Thank you so much for the tips and encouragement! I've been watching your videos for a while trying to get myself ready for when I can start to stream. I currently work too much to properly put in the time to stream. But once I have the time I will use those sticky notes that you mentioned. I think they are a great idea. Once again, thank you for all your hard work that you put into these videos. It shows that you put lots of care and effort into them. Hope to see more from you

    I will be honest and say that today when watching this video I was feeling very down on myself, thinking I am not good enough, I am not growing enough or fast enough. That I do not make good content and that I am probably not fun to watch. But, this video did help, and I am going to be writing post-it notes now because I love that idea. It hit me close to home when you said you get anxious, because I have lots of anxiety and throughout my streams, I stop and worry that I am not being captivating enough. I need more confidence in my streaming capability and when you said to look at how far you have come, it hit me just how far I have come since I started 5 months ago. So thank you for this video today.

    Wow that last tip really hit home. I get supported by great loving people pushing me, saying I have potential, but no matter what that little voice in my head is there saying "you're kidding yourself". At the end of the day, I wouldn't have gotten my first 10 followers, I wouldn't have edited my first video, and I definitely wouldn't have gotten my first donation if I didn't at least try. It's surreal how much I enjoy content creation, but also how stressful it can become. Thanks mate, your videos are great at reminding me that it's all part of the journey, and that it wouldn't be worth it if it was easy. Much love 🤜🏼🤛🏼💙💚

    Wow! Another fantastic video! It is very easy to get discouraged with streaming. Just last week I had a stream that had 10 average viewers and the very next stream dropped all the way down to 1.7… it can be frustrating but I’ve learned from your videos to go back through and watch my VODs and figure out where I went wrong and improve on it. Being critical of yourself is vital.

    WOW! 💖 Thank you for another wonderful video! I always go to your videos for a refresher and even check out the new videos as soon as I am! In the VTuber side of streaming, alot of people tend to make this mistake and yes, the words you say are true. Follow for follow, Good content is second, wallowing in failures. This caused alot of people to quit or get stuck into a constant "rebranding" but to those that perservere, they are able to grow and strive! 💖

    Wow, how did you know I had a bad week and I needed to hear that last tip? :D Mistake I made: focus too much on what is good content and getting so anxious that I would not make content at all. I just kept watching videos about how to create it, but not spend time actually creating it. How to deal with it: try to realise it's okay to make something that isn't perfect or even good, you need to take action to learn, in Dutch we have a saying "niet geschoten is altijd mis" which translates to ïf you don't shoot, you'll always miss" (nothing ventured, nothing gained).

    *Owen Wilson voice* WOW The collab thing is such a mood, and it's not just streaming together, being active in each other's communities counts too. I've been in a dude's chat who likes my content and I got a follow notification cos he shouted me out and said he likes my stuff, we've got a collab stream coming up but we've been hyping each other up for months now. I think I'm lucky that I have a great group of awesome friends that lurk in my stream and hype me up after every stream. Common phrase being "another great stream there catto" or something to that effect. I doubt I'll ever make a full time career outta streaming cos I love my day job too much but the loving and supportive community I'm building deffo keeps me going

    WAOW. I know you said WOW but I'm putting a lil spice onto it for funsies. Anyway, thank you again for another banger of a vid-- you're such a huge confidence booster and always have great advice that I try my best to follow in order for myself to grow too (without obsessing over it, of course). The collabing advice was interesting to me because I've heard many mixed opinions on that- mostly how collabing too much is harmful for things like growth because people want to see/talk/connect with YOU, the streamer, but if you are always playing with others and not really paying attention to chat, then people feel less enticed to watch. I know that even as a viewer, I've felt that way too at times. You make a good point on why it's good to do too though, and I'm sure like with most things, it's a matter of balance! I dig the lighting too, btw, and I hope you're recovering at a steady pace! I know how stressful it can be to have to take a week off from streaming, even. I think your energy is just fine and I genuinely can't tell if it's off and only know from your comment.. :P

    WOW! Funny you mention believing in yourself. I think it was last week, I had pretty major technically problems on stream and had to kill it. I was able to get things going again but I was just so down about the issues and thought nobody would be there after that. Turns out the community I have that watches me must've understood because they all came back and that made me realize as long as I go out there and do what's in my power to give people an enjoyable experience and put them first (within reason), technical problems won't stop regulars from coming back. Best believe I made sure to thank them for their support. If I can't believe in myself, I know I can believe in them and that's more than enough to push me forward and try to give back to them at least as much as they've given me.

    WOW! Hey Eljay thanks as always for the awesome tips dude! I'm curious how you feel about like breaks that are actually out of my control. Sort of forced from a living situation and moving so I can't stream much but I'm trying to interact with Discord as much as I can until the quality of the stream is correct. I have a feeling something like this might hurt me have you ever experienced breaks like this and what was the viewership reaction?

  • @StreamScheme

    @StreamScheme

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think forced breaks is why eventually everyone needs something like Tik tok or KZread to keep the activity and algo pumping towards your streams. I got sick for a week two weeks ago, couldn't stream or post videos, but my channel didn't suffer from it because I had safety nets. I've talked about it in a few videos like my revenue video and my KZread growth video :) Hope that helps! WOW! Enjoy this handcrafted #100%Crew Badge! :)

    Thank you for that video Eljay! Informative as always! I just wanted to ask about the collab part. I have the feeling that often the streamer does engage with chat either less other not at all anymore when collabing. How could one balance that act of playing with the collab partners and stay engaged with chat.

  • @StreamScheme

    @StreamScheme

    2 жыл бұрын

    It’s very tough! But it’s about making good content for all the lurkers, and muting discord to engage chat here and there. No real tips other than practice, and make engaging content in the collab as best you can.

    2 things I can hugely agree with is the thinking your own content sucks and focusing on growth all the time, I check my analytics both on twitch and youtube every day, I write down notes of what i should do better and ideas and I feel like sometimes I feel a bit down if it isn't working out, however like you said I keep on trying to push it forward and keep going :) thanks for this video, it's great as always Eljay!

    I'm generally skeptical about stream advice but ALL of this is VERY true. When my stream was on a decline I told my viewers im going to take a short break from streaming, 2weeks later I came back with a new attitude, revamped stream and more plans. my avg viewers in the month of July went up to 13 from 5.8 in June and my first event stream peaked at 27 viewers with an avg of 21 over a 4hr stream. You don't have to even be creative, you can copy ideas and put your own twist on them. Just make your streams exciting for the people who do watch you and don't create unreasonable incentive goals for them. Its not enough anymore to just be good at whatever game you are playing, people are taking the free time out of their own day to watch you so make their time worth being spent on your channel :)

    Being too engrossed in 'getting gud' is one mistake. I had many many hollow knight streams where I just went 'silent switch on sweat mode' trying to clear hard bosses. Yes, chatters cheer me on, but it was realllllllyyyyyyyy boring content. I've since learned to let loose a little, joke around about my fails and mistakes, and just be less serious. It has been a lot more fun for me and keep myself connected with the chatters. Also about the adding something new, I added 2 voicemods channel point redemptions and it really spiced things up. Chat loved it, redeem it during intense moments in the game and when I'm not looking at chat. They get a laugh. It really broke the stagnation I was feeling recently in my content, and I can't wait to experiment with more things :D
