I definitely needed this, Dmitri. We are a small roofing company in North Idaho. It's just my brother and I - 25 & 28 years old. This is our 4th year in business, and we're learning the industry is a marathon, not a sprint. It's been a long season, my new saying is "Every day is Monday." At first, it was simply in jest. But now, every day truly is Monday, and it's no longer a simple minded virtue gesture, but an exhausting reality. It brings to mind the good ol' boy phrase "proper planning prevents pitiful performance." I can't wait to find the mental bandwidth and time in our production schedule to meet you and attend one of your classes. Thanks for everything you do. You're a standup guy with a clear, genuine vision.

Thanks Mitch! Come to our biggest event this year in Orlando. You will make great friends, will meet my mentors and people who changed my business, I promise you will be grateful you did and will be back next year. Traveling and meeting others helps my head to be clear from depression. This is not an easy business to be in and we need friends

@@RoofingInsights3.0 this is the absolute truth. I've been in the roofing game from installer, repair guy, rep for a major shingle manufacturer, and now running my own business. I never know what day it is anymore but I've built a great network of people over the years and they continue to keep me busy. Those friends, though, also keep me from losing my mind at times. We all need friends and a good work life balance. Im still working on that balance (Hurricane Laura in my home state didn't help!) but can't wait til December to meet up with some great folks at the conference to learn some great things, share ideas, and let off some steam.

No joke, you just gave me a kick in my ass! I took the unlimited roofing license test Wednesday morning in Chicago and I still don't know if I passed, but yeah I'm literally saying I need some coaching, I'm guy in every situation you mentioned and more, but I haven't given up on this yet and idk why because most everything else in my life has been neglected to keep pursuing alot of bad habits that will in fact destroy me and my company, I need to change, I'm sure how, but I'm willing. I'll know if I passed in the next day or three

Awesome video. I’ve been in business for 30+years and have failed a few times. All from things mentioned in this video. Awesome information and principles to follow. I always had employees never subcontractors, and I always felt like I had to have the best of everything including trucks, equipment, etc. all those bills come due in the winter months also when there’s no work going on. Overhead is a killer of a business. Keep the overhead low. Can’t thank you enough. Keep up the great work.

My company is a family business of 44 years in San Diego, I have taken it over we are a general contractor that specializes in roofing, I am definitely guilty of 2 and 3. I am highly rated and spend a lot of time keeping it that way. Although I am not as successful as I wish to be I make a comfortable living. Reading the comment I completely understand the struggle of this business. I would say the hardest parts is finding people that are willing to work a job like this, and training them properly. I am starting to let go and trust other people, it is hard. My worst fear is having a 1000 warranty calls on behalf of a lame employee, the other problem is to get on those warranties right away before they turn into a problem. This is an extremely hard business to be in, but I am proud of my trade and my reputation. The rest of you keep up the hard work, and thank you for this video I really needed to watch this, you are not kidding about the depression you can have in this industry as an owner.

Good insights, even if a company has say 4 out of 5 stars, I’m weary and look at the reviews. Even in companies as low as 2 I ignore reviews because they are frivolous like long wait times at a dr, meaning things that can’t be fixed vs scams etc

I sent my contractor application out about 3 weeks ago, ironically all my bosses since I started working in construction did all five of those things you said in your video if you do you will fail in business and sure enough there all out of business. My current employer be been working for for 4 years and he was great at first and then he started to buy a bunch of properties and a year ago a restaurant with condos then he goes and completely remodels both the restaurant and the condos. To make a long story short a couple months later the pay checks stopped coming in and even though he couldn’t pay us he still demanded we work 60 hours a week and would make promises to pay us and when the day would arrive his cell phone would be off. Since then 5 employees have quit, one tried to steal a work van but ended up wrapping it around a telephone pole, then he took my work truck away from me and took all his tools and made buy all my own tools so when I got my own tools and equipment and I still was having to chase him for my money, always getting shorted on my pay, getting yelled and screamed at, and having to listen to him preach about being the greatest business man in ocean city I knew what I had to do. So I sent my application out and I haven’t told but when I did get it I wanted to tell him I would still work for him and just start slowly starting my roofing company but I have a feeling when I tell him he’s gonna lose it and just fire me on the spot . So I am a little nervous and I went on KZread for some help and I watched your video and it was great but at the same it was a little disheartening to hear that fact 80 percent of business fail by their third or fifth year. It’s no surprise they do because I’ve seen this behavior over and over again in all my bosses and threw my eyes it’s common sense that behavior would lead you to that result . I just hope I don’t get tempted with such behavior and lose self control. Thank you so much Dmitry for making this video , I wrote down some notes on an index card and plan to tape it to my dashboard tomorrow so I don’t lose focus to the end goal. I’ll check out these books you said I could find in the comments section and if there’s any other advise you can offer it would be immensely appreciated! Have a fabulous evening!

Hey Dimitri my name is Austin I have a small construction company mostly exterior siding and roofing and I’ve been struggling for the last year of what I should do if I should keep going or quit right now is doing OK because we had a big storm here but I’m not sure what to do after the storm is over

Work on your process. Storm is good but don’t rely on it. Take as much work as you can handle, make some easy money and invest it in education after the storm.

Guy I work for can't keep work going or either he lets the other crew members work but not call me..that's just what crosses my mind. I'm not a bad worker neither I'm Mexican btw. My work ethic is really good. And trust me I know what humble means. So what's going on y'all think? Should I step up and maybe do the door knocking myself...he does have more experience cause he's somewhere in his 40s im 26. But by experience I mean he's done roofing longer hands on...but I have noticed how awkward he gets around customers so maybe that's why we don't have any work. IDK if he will see this comment or not I don't care. I just care about knowing if it's me who is wrong or what?

Remember people there’s 139million homes in the us. Don’t let reviews determine a decision as man priority. Keep a low over head and learn the process with the installer. Manage those two employees and keep 5 customers on your board a month.. (sorry it’s pointless for me to share the secret. Anyone watching this fully is not the 1 % of millionaires in our population. Better get good at one thing and just be happy about it. Don’t try to get rich when it’s just the facts of mankind.

I'm on Google. But I dont ever get calls off it. I dont even think I have a review. Got lucky, pops was with a contractor, worked for him for about 15 years. Now I'm running it. I want the Google account to get business for me. But for repairs only. For now, I am busy with the new roofs. But I want to get more and hire more. So I can focus on repairs, and send a crew to the new roofs. And repair shit if they fuck up. Anyways. It rained today. So I'm off.
