The manual transmission is without a doubt one of the greatest inventions of modern history. That said, it's certainly not without flaws. Manual transmissions use a clutch instead of a torque converter like automatics, in order to create a coupling between the engine and the transmission. You might be surprised to find out that this actually results in lower wheel torque than an automatic. Additionally, manual transmissions shift differently than automatics, and this also leads to additional complications. While providing more control to the driver is generally a benefit, allowing a computer to take control can often lead to less mistakes. Check out the video for five major advantages of automatics over manual transmissions, which may impact your next buying decision.

    One disadvantage of manuals that I learned the hard way: you need all 4 limbs to operate it. If you travel alone, and hurt either a hand or a leg (especially a leg), you are basically stranded. On the other hand, a pirate with one hand, one leg and one eye would be perfectly fine operating an automatic, he would probably even be texting his crewmates in the process.

    I am surprised I haven't see more people mention it. The biggest advantage of an automatic is being able to inch forward more easily especially while in traffic. For example: lets say you are driving in stop and start traffic on the freeway. You don't have to constantly be operating the clutch while putting the car in 1st gear then neutral. All you have to do in an automatic is release the break to start and then press the break to stop -> even the gas is not necessary unless you are going over 5 miles an hour. You might not think this is that big of a deal but most people get very tired driving in slow traffic for hours with a manual.

  • @robertulrich3964

    @robertulrich3964

    3 ай бұрын

    im suprised at your statement. actually, you can slip a clutch out 5% and creep forward in heavy traffic. if you don't tailgate, one could argue, there's less work because you don't have to start/stop with a brake, you slip and creep. at least that's how my car worked. there might be some cars that have really heavy clutches which is outside my point.

    The only time I have felt my manual transmission was a disadvantage was the time I was driving cross country to work with a coworker to save fatigue and split fuel cost. When he got in the car his eyes got big and he said"this is a manual?' I said, "yep " and thought nothing of it till it was his turn to drive, at which point he admitted he had never driven a manual..... I wound up driving the whole 1500 miles straight through after a failed attempt to coach him on how to drive a stick. Lessons ended after he stomped the parking brake instead of the clutch while taking an off ramp. On the plus side he covered all fuel for the trip to make up for his inability to drive.

    For off-road, you did make a couple comments but this is where an auto really shines. The control and low crawl without stalling at incline is paramount. Try losing power brakes, steering when off camber and extreme angle - and restarting your engine when gravity is not helping fluids etc. In addition - the shock load on non-upgraded drivetrain parts when people put oversized wheels/tires - an auto will drastically help that.

  • @benmlee

    @benmlee

    2 ай бұрын

    Main advantage of auto is slow crawling. The shock on drivetrain is up to the driver, and you do have a few reserve braking cycles even after engine stalls. On the plus side of manual, the main thing is feel for terrain. You know exactly how much power and how fast the wheels are turning. You can feel when the tire starts to slip even a tiny amount. Very important when you are rocking back and forth to get unstuck. Going thru varying terrain, you can feel when is slippery, so don't gas it. Then when you feel more traction, give it good gas to get back up to speed. With auto, you loose all that. I hardly get stuck driving manual. With auto transmission, I got stuck in sand where I normally would have no issue feeling the terrain. Takes finesse to drive a manual. I use to see it all the time at the mud flats in Azusa, CA. Guys in auto trucks would floor the gas and dig themselves up to the axel without realizing the wheels are just spinning. With manual, you know that immediately and stop.

    @@crayonbouzu8578 I’d wait with calling manual “outdated” until the multiple reliability issues with automatics are sorted out (both in terms of usage and servicing). Not wanting a manual is understandable if driving is just “transport” to you, but not everyone sees it that way, with many taking pleasure in the process and pride in their control and technique. An automatic simply doesn’t provide the same degree of control, and never will. As for the “stick” remark, I understand you’d try to discredit something you don’t have the skills to do, but why bring homophobia into it? ;)

    I took a buddy of mind on a road trip from central Florida to PA for a Volkswagen gathering last year. I was in a mk4 Jetta TDi with a 5spd, of which he didn't know how to drive. All was fine on the way up, but not getting much sleep over the weekend, I had issues staying awake, especially at night. I ended up pulling over and giving him a crash course in driving a manual while in a grocery store parking lot as we ate an early breakfast. Once he dragged it up the on ramp and put it in fifth, I conked out. Woke up a few hrs later having crossed thru two states without a hitch. Quite an interesting trip lol.

    A few advantages with the manual. 1) Your vehicle will never be stolen because no one can drive a manual anymore. 2) You won't have to pay $5,000 to have your automatic transmission replaced. You will have to do a clutch, but that costs a lot less. My Honda Civic Si has 150,000 miles on it and the clutch still works like brand new. 3) You can coast! I do this all the time when I see a red light coming up or going downhill. 4) If your battery dies, you can still get your car started. Get the car on a little incline, hop in, let it roll down the incline and pop the clutch. Boom, you are on your way.

  • @TechTusiast
    @TechTusiast9 ай бұрын

    1) Launching is not what people who drive on roads should be concerned 2) Most "automatics" these days do not have torque converter, but double clutch or steel/rubber band, so in most cases you don't get the benefits of traditional automatic 3) Car is supposed to built to last that shock and again, not really a thing on normal road use 4) Not really an issue, except maybe more work. You use first gear, raise clutch all the way and car goes slow. If it goes too fast, put clutch down for a while and use inertia. 5) With manual, you can select low gear before you start using it and you don't have to wait for kick-down to happen 6) With a strange car, you put gear in, start to raise clutch, when you feel car want's to go, release parking brake. To get a car moving forward on even surface, clutch down, 1st gear on, start raising clutch slowly and car will start moving even if you don't give it any gas. If you feel engine struggling, press clutch a bit deeper and start raising it again slower. I do prefer automatic, but only the reliable ones, like traditional automatic with torque converter and the type of eCVT Toyota ja probably Mitsubishi too uses. I would not touch CVT and anyone getting DSC/DSG should realize that while it is better than CVT, it too has shorter life span than good systems and it will cost an arm and a leg and then some to fix when it breaks or needs service.

Nowadays, the fuel saving is often insignificant, between automatic & manual. Couple that, w/ the fact that "kids today" don't seem too interested in the joy of driving, & it looks like manual transmissions won't make a comeback. One good reason to have a manual in a truck is, when people ask to borrow it, you can be the good guy & say, "sure", but then they see that it's a manual shift, so they say, "thanks anyway, but I can't drive a stick".

    HERESY! In all seriousness though, you do have very good points. I know a vast majority of people see driving as simply point A to point B, and an automatic makes a lot of sense for them. Personally, I've been driving a manual longer than I've driven an automatic and I hope I can keep it that way for as long as I can. Sure I won't win any drag races but I find it way more fun and engaging.

    So do I. Any man, woman or child can drive an automatic. I like to show that I can do something that not everybody can do. And I'm driving a pickup truck, not a high performance drag car. It's got an extra slow speed for crawling along in traffic and I know I'm saving a little gas money over an automatic. Even pickup trucks have been mainly automatics for a long time. So I like the rarity factor of a standard as well as knowing that it would be harder to steal one.

    As someone who's been driving standard transmission vehicles for over 40 years, they are still my choice. I bought my current car in 2010 and when I test drove it with the salesman, he asked me how long I had been driving trucks. I asked why he thought that and he said that I was so smooth with the clutch, especially for the first time driving that car. Now, he wasn't much of a standard trans driver, as I was cringing watching him move it, so it's definitely taken with a grain of salt, but I have yet to wear out a clutch disc or get chatter from heat spots on the flywheel and/or pressure plate. I drove for a ride hailing service for 9 months, adding 70k miles to my car's odometer in that time, and several customers noted that they didn't notice it was a standard trans until long into the journey. My favorite thing about standard transmissions is that it's tactile and you have greater control over the amount and timing of torque being applied to the wheels. If the road is covered in snow or ice, you can start off in second gear and reduce wheel spin. Plus, you can use the trans to help control downhill speeds with engine drag vs riding the brakes. In my car, if you let off the throttle while in gear, after a few seconds the computer stops sending fuel to the engine, until you reach idle speed. So, if you're coasting downhill, leave it in gear and not in neutral, and you won't consume fuel during that time. Typically, standard transmissions return better fuel mileage due to automatics having a hydraulic pump that doesn't contribute to the power sent to the wheels. Dual clutch transmissions and CVT's function differently and often are more fuel efficient due to more gear ratios available, which reduce overall load to the engine during normal acceleration. Most standard transmissions have 5 or 6 forward gears, where DCT's are 7 or more and CVT's have an infinite amount up to the final drive ratio. CVT's are like snowmobiles, where you really run at a constant RPM, while the transmission continues to increase the output shaft speed. They don't handle abuse, like towing or drag racing, and wear out faster than typical automatics.

    I'll give you one very good reason to stick to manuals. Yeah, ultimately, modern automatics are quicker in acceleration, but you will pay for that slight advantage with a major repair bill when it breaks, and most likely, it will. You can drive a manual almost as fast, and if you don't beat the clutch and syncros to death, that system will ultimately last longer and repairs that might be needed would be less costly. Also, I believe ultimate feel and control of traction is better in a manual, as well as the driver needing to pay attention to road conditions more to determine the proper gear to be in. Automatics may be faster but manuals are more fun and maybe safer.

    Why you shouldn't buy a manual: 1. Manufacturers are giving up on them. 2. DCT shift in 60-120ms. Quicker than the time to drop the clutch or blink an eye. 3. 8spd, 10spds allow fuel efficiency through optimization of torque curves and lower revs at cruising speed. Manuals end at 6 or 7th gear. 4. No clutch needed. Ever. 5. Easy to sell as a used car. Manuals are for pros. And only one reason why you should: 1. More FUN, engaging, emotional and energetic. OK, I'm sold. Manual it is for me.

    Johan Cha Ford and GM’s co-developed 10-speed automatic certainly seems to be a great transmission, and utilizing it in a truck is a great move to boost fuel economy, as well as the reasons you already mentioned. But manual transmissions are definitely way more emotional and engaging. There’s something so incredibly satisfying about shifting perfectly and having ultimate control over the car. My Mazda is a manual and I love it. To me, the biggest downside to a manual is crawling through traffic, but on open country roads (there are a few left around here) a manual is an absolute joy.

    I agree with the CRAWLING point. It’s very difficult and annoying in manual transmission. It wears down the clutch plate.

    My dad had a pickup burn because of driving too slow for too long with an automatic while working on the ranch. He even had a transmission cooler with its radiator in front of the engine radiator and an always on fan attached directly to the crank shaft, to help control the ATF temperature. Unfortunately, Because he was going so slowly the torque converter was heating up the AFT faster than the cooler could extract the heat and eventually the fluid burned. The fire erupted into the engine bay through the fill/dipstick tube and spread the fire there. His other pickup would have been better suited to those conditions because, though a manual, it has a 7:1 granny gear for slow starts with a heavy load and if really needed a 2:1 reduction in the transfer case. Yes, for short distances, the torque converter will be better for slower speeds than gears accommodate, but for very long distances, there is no substitute for reduced gear ratios, without which, either system will see damage or catastrophic failure.

    I just think when I'm driving manual, I actually feel like I'M the one that controls the vehicle at all times(witch is more fun). Wherein the comfort is better in automatic, but I don't feel that involved with the driving itself. So I'll stick with manual.

    Totally agree with all your reasons. The CVT in my wife's crosstrek is a great, efficient transmission. But I'm going to drive stick until I'm physically unable to do so. (Cold, dead hands, etc, etc...) There are days where my greatest joy is a solid 4-3 downshift...

But now I’m thinking of buying a 1997 Supra auto maybe manual. Reason for an auto is it’ll be such a drag to keep on focusing shifting gears in traffic, so instead I can comfortably cruise in my dream car. What is y’all take on manual in high traffic city’s

    Dude IDK what y'all's talking about, om Romania most people drive manuals, I, an 18 year old, have been taken straight to the road, on my first driving lesson, it's the same for everyone, it literally takes like, 5 minutes to learn teh controls???? The literal dumbest people, who can barely read or write, can drive a manual no problem, everyone here can drive a manual. I just spent like 30 minutes with my father, on a plain, like, where cattle usually eat, or where you plant corn, matter of fact there was a corn plantarion nearby, so I spent like 30 minutes there, to learn how to start the car, but the thing is it's more difficult there, cause it's not flat, and the tires don't grip enough so you gotta be a little aggressive, but I managed, and then the very next day the driving instructor just took me straight to the road, knowing i have never driven a car before, and nothing happened, it was a less circulated road, but, dang, I'm fine, everyone here drives manuals, and it's pretty nice tbh, you need to pay a lot of attention to everything at first, but you get used to it easily, it's pretty cool.
