For me the biggest advantage of EDCing a fixed blade is the variety of carry options. I mean 9 out of 10 times you carry a folder in your pocket for quick and easy draw. While there are much more carry options for a fixed blade, as long as you have kydex sheath, some 550 cord or ulticlip/tecloc and a blade length not exceeding 4 inches. Plus if you live in a place where cops love to perform illegal searches and don't bother learning knife laws, it is easier to conceal a neck knife, since pockets is the first (often the only) thing they check.

Thanks for the sheath options especially! I find the achilles heel of all EDC fixed blades is the sheath design. The Boker AK1 has an excellent sheath that's included and works for a few other knives of similar size.

I'm a bigger guy, an outdoorsman, and have worked in rugged industrial environments for 40 years. I use my knives a lot and am hard on them. Being wider in the ass, I can move a folder from the pocket clip to inside the pocket before sitting down to a box of donuts so it doesn't hang up on the arm of the chair. :) That's the main reason I prefer a folder over a belt carried fixed blade. I also own a few "neck knives", Cold Steel to be more specific. Those are handy because I can hang extra shit on the neck string and are no more difficult to re-sheath than a fixed blade belt knife. I have over 100 knives, Boker, SOG, Spyderco, older Cold Steel, Mora-kniv, Leatherman, CRKT, Gerber and other brands. My EDC folder is a Cold Steel T-Lite 4". My back up folders are all Spyderco's. Go to hunter is a Cold Steel Master Hunter San Mai. I enjoyed your opinions on knives.

In my opinion carrying a fixed blade is one of the best options. Since I live in Germany and carrying a one handed, locking blade is illegal a fixed just does the trick. Fast and easy access, reliable and you dont have to worry about closing on you like when carrying a slipjoint. I EDC a Sanrenmu 7130. Awesome blade, great bang for your buck at 20$. Its only made out of 8Cr13MoV but they did the heat treatment very good

Same here, I’m also from Germany and I’d rather carry a fixed blade because it’s also easier to explain to police that a blade length up to 12 cm is allowed. I’m more scared that the Officers don’t understand what a slipjoint knife is and that they are legal.

The empowering part comes from stability. I've been using a fixed for my EDC for a few years now: Lionsteel M1, Becker bk14 and most recently an MKM Makro. Love the M1 and Makro, the BK14 was the most disappointing knife purchase I've ever bought. The sheath for the MKM is awesome. The magnetic belt loop let's me put it in my pocket, belt, sleeve, waistband.... I live in Massachusetts, and literally everything with a blade longer that 1.5" is illegal, with the exception of folding knives. Unfortunately going by their definition, 95% of pocket knives aren't folding knives, anything with a locking mechanism isn't considered folding. The law is really ambiguous because they're illegal when you have them on you "while in the commission of a crime." I read it like the seatbelt law: you need to have them on, but they can't pull you over just for that. I used to be wary of staying away from automatics, certain blade shapes, etc. After a while I just said Fck it I'm breaking the law anyway, might as well carry what I like. It's like robbing a bank: whether you get out with $2000 or $200K, you're facing the same charge. I don't like black blade finishes, but in a city they have an advantage of perception. I used to take the commuter rail into Boston everyday. I would pull out a knife with a 2" satin blade would draw eyes. I swear I could pull out a Rambo knife, but with a black finish people don't blink an eye. Besides being hard to see I think there's some instinct that kicks in when people see naked steel, whereas black and some gray finished almost make them look like toys.

The best edc fixeds blade I've used are the Bark River mini tundra and the Ultra lite Bushcrafter. I made my own kydex pocket sheathes with ulticlips and have not had any issues with tears like you have. Been using both of those knives consistently for the past year. The best part, the ULB in particular is the exact same size as a Benchmade 940, so when people react to a fixed blade, I explain that its no bigger than a pocket knife, and I've convinced a few others to edc fixed blades for themselves.

Been carrying a fixed blade I made for about a year now. 3-4 finger mammoth ivory handle, copper bolsters and pins, w2 differential hardened blade with a blued finish. Carried scout style on my back with a leather kydex combo sheath. I love it, partly because I made it and it’s sentimental but it’s also bulletproof. I don’t need to worry and it’s very comfortable to use. In Canada our knife laws are pretty lax except for some bylaws in cities. We can carry any legal blade everyday concealed or not as long as it is used as a tool not a weapon. If you plan to use it as a weapon it is illegal to carry and definitely illegal to conceal be it a fixed or folder.

Totally depends on your needs and usage. You can carry a Rat1 (for $20) and beat the crap out of it. Am I in the Wild west where I need to be able to 'draw' a weapon on demand...I think not. I camp and am outdoors a lot. I ALWAYS have a folder or two on me (sometimes a neck knife). I also have a multi-tool, a fixed blade & a hatchet in my car all the time. As far as the law goes, unless you commit a crime or are waving a big freakin' machete about, no one is going to bother you (People who live in CA. you have lots of problems, I won't even go there). I live in NC also....Carry what you are most comfortable with and does the most for you, it's a tool after all.

Outdoors / woods - BK7 / Tops Operator 7 EDC: Tops CUT 4.0 - for almost 3 years now. Has been amazing. Sheath has become slightly loose after extended usage. But definitely worth it. Before that, Cold Steel minitac Skinner was my EDC for almost 8 years. Trivia - in Europe, especially Scandinavia, public reaction is opposite. Fixed blades are normal, folders and a spydie flick might give people a heart attack 😂

I daily carry a fixed blade. I designed a custom wharncliffe that was made by Wachtman Knife and Tool. It's got a just over 4.5 inch blade, and a slim 4 inch handle. I pocket carry it with an ulticlip. It's perfect, you don't feel the bulk of the sheath in your pocket, and the handle is short enough that it isn't obnoxious. I love having a fixed blade on me, there's just something cool about knowing that I could baton wood anytime I want, they do severely lack in the fidget factor though.

Im verry much with you on that one. In Germany the law for fixed blads is much more clear than with folders. We are allowed to carry fixed up to a blade length of 12cm / 4.7" ! I considder that actually slightly too large for EDC but nice to have lol. My top three are the Giantmouse GMF1! Had id since the first run came out. Because its like the most friendly looking fixed out there and once u learn to use a small fixed like that and slab a lanyard on it its perfect for most situations! And got the oak city leather sheath and scales too recently haha! 2 would be the BMKT EDC1 chisle Bowie. And 2 my TPK mid size raptor. Get a Mummert ti clip! Slotted!!! Thankmme later. Perfect for pocket carry but also work on the belt / Pants. Btw Im not a fan of the Bulltrout or Guardian 3. The chiol gets my index finger too close to the edge. Greetings from @1niceknife

Fixed blades are the way to go. I only use my folder to open boxes and mail. Can’t food prep with a folder just doesn’t make sense to get food everywhere then take it all apart to clean. I belt carry a bravo 1 LT and do everything else with it round the ranch and I love it.

My problem with fixed blades is I rarely wear a belt. If I am wearing a belt, my legally concealed firearm is on it.

I like the pocket clip idea. I plan on carrying my LTWRIGHT Patriot everyday, but I don't always wear belts. Sometimes I wear overalls, so I'll need a method other than stuffing the knife and sheath in my pocket. I'm not opening the knife for use until after Christmas. My wife wants something to put under the tree, so 35 years says so.

IMHO The Bob Dozier Sheath has been around for years as well as his knives. He had us all beat a very long time ago. He's been making customs for years. He made one for me back in me back in 2007. Been a workhorse since.

A clip manufacturer out there is missing a big trick. How difficult to produce a pocket clip which is angled to minimise the space taken up by a sheath (Kydex) and not chew up a pocket (Ulticlip take note).

I think you would like a dangler sheath for your fixed blades, many leather makers can custom make one for you. They are very comfortable and visible since they sit low. LT Wright makes them but you can have them custom made too.

I can't edc a fixed blade, but when working or camping dangler sheaths really make the comfort a lot better for me and eases resheathing. With traditional sheaths, I often feel like I end up with the handle pressing into my ribs when I bend in certain directions, or the bottom digging into my thigh.

I was a folder and a SAK kinda guy for years but then I got an outside job and bought an Esee Izula 2 and have been carrying a fixed roughly 90% of my carry. I carry my Izula 2 most of the time but I rotate to an Esee 4 or a Mora Garberg or standard Izula. Its been this way for 5 years now and I dont think Ill see myself elsewhere. I use to give a damn about people seeing my knife but the longer I carry fixed the less I care.

Need a video on concealed carry fixed blades, good retention, comfortable to carry, and good concealment. I need one that's comfortable to run around and work with that's comfortable and makes a great self defense tool as well.

Taylor, I see the need for you to start doing your own custom leather and kydex sheaths. I can see a Topo tooled leather design. And when I carry a fix blade its a BK11 in a scout carry. I fashioned a leather harness for the standard sheath that comes with her.

So in my area I can conceal carry a small fixed blade. (Most officers follow the palm of the hand rule.) I prefer to carry in what I the "cord carry." Kidex or plastic sheath is basically a must, and if you're familiar with the Lucas Burnley obake i take it from that. Just inside the waistband on a nice length of paracord for fast and easy deployment. Love it.

had a similiar experience.. bought 3 sheaths for one knife and an ulticlip, nothing helped, it was very uncomfortable. Gave up.. Then I bought a new belt pocket organizer and found out by accident that my fixed blade fits perfectly and since then I ve been happily carrying it.

I have three main "knives" that I carry every day. Leatherman Wave in black oxide in a leather leatherman sheath, Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight, and a KaBar TDI in an NSRTACTICAL.COM horizontal kydex sheath with a belt clip. I started with the Leatherman and wanted a knife specifically for utility with less bulk. I tried several folders, Kershaw Cryo and Blur, OKC RAT2, Spyderco Tenacious and then the Manix 2. The KaBar I got as a dedicated defensive knife. Living in a more urban environment, I can attest to the public perception on carrying a knife, let alone several. I actually carry 5, including a Leatherman Squirt PS4 and a 2019 limited edition SAK Cadet in "champagne". Even the small knives get glared at in public, not at my job though.

One thing I’ve been looking for is some sort of pocket set of Allen wrenches ... or a tool w several sizes of Allen wrench . Screwdriver and bits I’m good , wrenches I’m good , but I’m looking specifically Allen wrenches ... if you have some recommendations I’d appreciate it

For 5 years I have carried EDC the benchmade bushcrafter... with a custom homemade kydex sheath. I carry it in the pocket of my Fjallraven Vidda Pro pants; which have deep pockets; also which I own many pairs of and wear exclusively. The knife barely sticks out of the top of the pocket; which is great, because I have a pinch point to grab the handle with. It's hard to even tell I have it on me.
