Lewis - I just want to comment that you did a really nice job interviewing Brene. You didn't cut her off or talk over her. Introverts like time to think about what they want to say before they speak, and you gave her that time instead of rushing her or finishing her sentence with what you thought she might be trying to say.

You couldn't be more right. Even though it's said you should forgive, regardless of whether someone apologizes - thinking about my own father... an apology or accountability for his shortcomings would have changed the entire course of our relationship. We had a moment 4 years or so before he died where he was actually vulnerable, apologized - it felt like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders and thought - finally, things could be different! Unfortunately old habits die hard and he returned to the comfort of his old ways until he died.

I think this is a good quote but I could see where someone could use this as a way to not grow as a person. The type of people who are crass and say, I just like to keep it real, as a way of explaining why they haven't matured or grown as a person or any not so attractive qualities they have. Like they are saying, this is who I am love it or leave it even when who they are is someone who has stayed the same since high school. I know someone like this and I don't want to be around her. Maybe she hasn't betrayed herself but she hasn't grown or matured in any way. She is true to herself but in a bad way not a good way.

I loved the idea of changing the belief by forgiving yourself from thinking a negative thought, forgiving it, and changing it. Marissa Peer has helped me with that too. Whenever I start getting negative thoughts, I mentally respond with, “I am worthy, I am enough, and I am loveable.” I do this especially when I am anxious or when I have to do something that takes courage. Sometimes I still get butterflies in my stomach, but it helps me get through my difficult task, and then I often feel empowered or relieved.

As I think, even maybe believe, that "me" is something I do or what I am: my advocacy work, being a mom or grandmother, etc. I really don't know who I am, who my true self really is. Being 50, I am LOST. I had to leave all the work I was doing due to extreme burn-out, its effect on my health -mentally, emotionally and physically. I want to know ME and not who others expect me to be. I love your talks, your interviews and your insights Brene. Thank you so much!!! --Tess

You enspire me. I'm 63 and when I lost my home and my family I lost myself. I'm still trying to figure out who I am now. I've been listening to videos about this. It's motivating me and I haven't felt motivated in a very long time. And what you said about making your children proud really hit my heart because I've been thinking about this. I'm so done living in poverty and even feeling like a victim. I'm NOT a victim. I've been procrastinating and there's some fear there and laziness. But I DON'T have control of my situation because my body doesn't cooperate ALOT of the time. And I was someone who always had many projects. One day my body said NOPE! Very distressing and I didn't handle it well. PAIN will stop you in your tracks but I have plans. Plans that I have no idea how to achieve with what I have to work with.

I think we will always be figuring it all out. Life is filled with ups and downs with all the uncertainty life brings, it also brings such beauty, in all we do, when we look closely. Sometimes, when feeling lost, in need of true connection, I do feel I need a roadmap too, to be certain but this isn't really possible. There is no real blueprint. So, we are all on the same page really and we belong to ourselves. We all all developing, evolving, changing. Who we are today will change in a year, two years. Such food for thought. This interview resonates so much. Thank you Brene. Never try to fit in, always be you. It is the most wonderful gift! Love your interviews and you interview so sensitively Lewis. I love the fact that you joined a musical at school and didn't stay in what others thought you would be. Wonderful.

I have really done the work, girl it was tough, but wow at almost 57, I’m standing strong, even in those vulnerable moments. I reflect way more than I armour up, and it’s life changing. Thank you beautiful soul sister 🙏🏼

I have long maintained that one cannot be brave UNLESS one is afraid first. I recall an interview Barbara Walters did with General Schwarzkopf ("Stormin' Norman" )years ago after Desert Storm. When he spoke of the concern of heading out away from his wife and daughters, he wept openly. Later Walters mentioned how tears and vulnerability seemed the antithesis of his image as a hard core military leader. He candidly and directly responded that it was the men who couldn't weep who worried him the most in battle and life. Profound!!

Your teenage years feels so vital because you're really just starting to learn how to apply who you are without often knowing who you are and with your peers who all basically feel the same way. The biggest danger is thinking the way your life is in your teenage years is the way it's always going to be. That is a total delusion and can lead to tragedy such as suicide. If teenagers could understand it's a testing ground and wether you succeed or fail in these years you have a whole other world waiting beyond it where you basically start a second life. Don't give up on you 🙌

Brene Brown must be a big fan of Maya Angelou. Everything she expressed and every quote is a play or replay of Ms. Angelou's beliefs, quotes from her parents and grandparents, or quotes from Maya Angelou during interviews. I love Ms. Angelou as well. She is a powerfully blessed spirit.

I did the best I could with my kids. Now I'm 55, my daughters are 28 and 25, and they say I was the worse mom. They ended their relationships with me. The fact I had health issues and an extremely narcissist partner isn't an excuse, but I wish my daughters could understand how this impacted the family and that I didn't, on purpose, be less than they needed.when I take responsibility for what happened during their childhood...they tell me I'm acting the martyr. So at 55 I have escaped a bad marriage, lost my income and started over, lost my daughters, and trying to find who I am.

It sounds like your daughters need to heal and grow some more. I always thought my mother was less than I needed her to be, however as I had my own family I saw that life happened to my mother and she did the best she could with what she had. The fact that your daughters aren’t allowing you to take responsibility shows me they aren’t ready to heal yet, but they might in time. Wishing you love and peace x

Love them all but as POC we deal with not only the normal existential stuff but the constant reminder in daily life and the media that our lives are disposable and given less value than the rest. So it's nice to see people who look like me and my family sharing their experience. Loved this ❤️
