Had a male Newfie for 13 years - yes, lucky enough to have him for 5 years longer than their average life expectancy. And I appreciated and adored every moment with Gunner. To this gentleman’s points, I can attest to all the pros. And will also attest to the cons from his other video. IMHO, the former outweighs the latter, as long as your mindset, research, and realistic expectations are taken into consideration. Brushed and raked every day. 6 rags across the house to wipe the drool before he shook his head and spread it on the floors, walls, and ceilings. Taking him to a pro groomer every six weeks to address what we couldn’t have otherwise. And yet...a rockstar on every walk we took - kids and adults drawn to his size and gentle nature, loving every sniff, gentle head nudge, and accommodation as they all petted and patted him. Initial consternation followed by beautiful acquiescence once they realized Gunner’s natural affection and curiosity. Will end on this note - our daughter was 12 once our big guy got really big (150 pounds) when she was about 80 soaking wet. They would wrestle in the family room for a half hour (she loved it!), and at times I couldn’t see her because his size dwarfed hers. But I always knew she was safe, because he KNEW they were playing, and he had the wherewithal and proprioception to not only do no harm, but to exhibit a preternatural level of safety and security that allowed them to enjoy the fun they were having. Thank you for this excellent video!

On the weight part, I’m a 95lb adult. In your opinion would my smaller size make owning a Newfie hard or as long as I train him/her well as a puppy would it be ok? Does even a well trained Newfie sometimes pull on their leash if they see a squirrel or something, or do they have better self control than that?

I love Newfies. Interacted with many of them but I've never yet been a 'dad' to one but I hope to someday. My Mal is also 150 pounds and he always wrestled with me and my kids, never hurting any of us, but with doglike abandon and extreme pleasure (for both him and the humans, big and small) The interaction with other people (especially smaller kids) I totally get. I can never walk mine without at least one person approaching and asking if they can say hello and petting him. We are so lucky to share that experience and appetite for life. Every second is precious and they teach us so much.

I had 3 goofy newfies over a 25 year period. Part of the time we had 2. They are wonderful family members. The problem is that when they pass, you mourn them as much as loosing a child. Newfies and kids do get along very well. If you like to swim, they may decide to rescue you, whether you want to be rescued or not. If you get a newfie, get a central vacuum. Good Luck, Rick

As a young, petite woman it would be very beneficial to have a large, strong looking dog. My current dog has taken years to start getting used to kids, which I'd prefer not deal with again. I LOVE anything water related. Grooming is my passion. And having a trainable dog is a must for me since it will be my next service dog. Truly the perfect dog for me 😄😊

My Gracie, when she was 7 months old, without any training, put herself between me and someone verbally accosting me in a pet store, and took several steps towards the angry person. That person literally backed up, and then the manager came out and helped the petson find the door. Grace stayed right on my leg the rest of the time in the store. It was very impressive to see that instinct. And she was only 7 months old!! Newfs are the best, bar none!

I want to get one so bad! They have made me love dogs again. During pregnancy my hormones caused me to be terrified of dogs. It was so weird. I’ve always been an animal lover. Seeing how they are with children MELTS my heart! I love that they are such a sweet big fluffy hairy stinky goopy giants. I love elephants and any gentle giant. Something is so beautiful about an animal that could easily kill if they wanted to but lacks that desire. So full of tenderness and slobber! I love it 🥰

My Mom was watching my Newfie a couple months back and her two golden retrievers. Some random guy came into their backyard while my Mom took a shower. Her back door was open, so the guy came straight to the open door. Before he could get to the door however, he was confronted with a 150lbs of mad barking Newfie chasing him out of the fence. That's not the first time he tried to protect her from someone walking into their back yard. About a year earlier, she had gotten a poop cleaning service to help her and the pooper scooper guy walked in like usual but this time my pup was there, too. He let himself into the yard and proceeded to walk around. My Hershey didn't like this guy and busted through a screen window to chase him out. Chances are he'd only give him kisses but he didn't take that chance until he was locked in a room.

Newfoundlands are 1. Big 2.smart 3. gentle 4.massively loyal 5. love the snow love to chomp on ice cubes 6.easy to train 7. teach me how to swim 8. good sense of humour 9. Sleep with one eye open 10. little dogs must have time to adjust to big Newfoundlands 11.& 12. Newfoundlands do not forget what they have been trained They will show you (I raised five Newfies..)They loved my stuffed fresh turkey One year I baked a 52pound bird..my Newfoundlands loved it. 13. Groom outside...They love the cold water in the spring, summer. 14. Easy to hook onto a wagon or cart...They know what to do 15.Newfoundlands are heavy and I would not set it free with little kids even if they were trained. Accidents do happen as with any dog. 16. Newfies have a good sense of humour., They want me to laugh if they deliberately shake their shaggy head & get slobber up on the kitchen ceiling. Their favorite place to sleep is stretched out on The kitchen floor waiting for their roast turkey! AnnaPenrod😎

Good points, training is indeed # 1, too many people expect a Newf to be an instant gentle giant. No they need a lot of training , and attention from the owner to develop into the laid back great dogs they are. Grooming can be a daily chore or you will have a matted dog.

I don't know if anyone has seen a newfy fight. Mine engaged a wolf .i have never been afraid of a dog but holy cow when I tried to pull him back the power he had was scary the wolf bit him in the side of his face he tore that wolfs eye socket open .when I tried to pull him back again he turned toward me and snapped omg I have never seen teeth so big in my life but the bottom line is he protected me from a wolf attack any other time he runs from his own shadow this is the only time I have ever had any trouble out of him 99% of the time he is just a loveing gentle baby I think newfy's are an awesome breed I know have two , I did have a female but she started having seizure s and my vet offered to adopt her he also loves the newfy's his wife was so ecstatic to get a female

I adore this breed! I love big, bear dogs. When I was 9 my mom got a Berner sennen, which are decently big mountain dogs. We had to find a new home for him though, because we had to do an emergency house move. We moved from a big house with big yard to a tiny apartment complex, and we felt bad that he didn’t have his big hard anymore. So we rehomed him. At 16 I adopted a dog from the shelter, training went amazingly. He’s decently small. Me and my mom are ready to have a big dog again, since we moved in with my stepdad who has a yard. I really like the training process when getting a dog, the only thing I’m worried about, though, is leash pulling. These dogs can grow till 70 cm, I’m 1 meters and 55 cms. Im a petite lady, not very strong. This dog will reach my hips/stomach, which I don’t mind, but will I be able to control it? It’s obvious that I’m gonna need to do multiple training courses, but will I be able to control this dog? Will I be able to take him on a quick walk and not worry about breaking my back when he sees another dog? It’s the only thing preventing me from getting this dog. Will I be able to train it and walk with him without worrying about falling over and getting dragged around?

My 1st Newfoundland was the perfect gentle giant…. 206 lbs of loving hairy drooling sweetness. Always happy and playful. He passed after 9 wonderful years. I still miss my buddy. My 2nd Newfoundland was a repeat of my buddy only smaller (190 lbs). Unfortunately after 9 years he had congestive heart failure and we had to put him down. That was tough.. My 3rd Newfoundland has some real problems. She developed severe allergies to so many things. She’s an inside dog, has problems growing hair, needs prescription dog food and an allergy shot every two weeks. However she is the sweetest dog I’ve ever had, wouldn’t trade her for the world! Newfoundland #4 is a Landseer. He’s almost 2 years old and has unbelievable energy. Him and sweety dog are buddies. He loves the outdoors, Loves his walks in the woods. I don’t think there is an inch of my woods he hasn’t explored. Still a rambunctious puppy, but loves to cuddle. These dogs have all been great with 1st my kids and now with my grand kids. They love playing in the snow and if they see water they need to play in it. Greatest dogs ever. I grew up with German Shepherds, have had Beagles and Labs, but the best dog of all is the Newfoundland!

Referring to what the perfect dog is for me your test has me with a Mastiff or a Bassett. I would not have either one of those floppy sloppy dogs unless I had rescued it because no one else could or would and was fostering it for the same reason. My point of contention with the test is that my Amstaff and my Boxer were perfect for me, given the same criteria you asked of me on the test.

I have a 10 month old Landseer. I am single and live in a row house with a small yard. Ichinojo does need long walks because of the lack of space at my house, and he sheds enough to knit a dozen sweaters and drools enough to fill a bathtub 😆 He's great with my cousin's 3 year old. I take him to the beach and the lochs and he just loves the water and it's often difficult to get him to come out.

Hey, I'm trying to figure out what kind of dog I should get. Size isn't an issue since I live on 28 acres. I need to get a livestock guardian dog that is also pretty chill. I've got horses, cows, chickens, cats and more around and need something that will scare off coyote or raccoon but won't got after anyone or anything. Willing to put in time to train and would have time to groom weekly or biweekly. I live in northern Montana so cold hardiness would be important to since unless the weather was truly terrible the pupper would be left out to free roam and protect the livestock. In fact even at night unless it was horribly cold (under say 20 or so) it would be out in the barn with a warm place to rest. While I would love and dote on a dog it's primary function would be a working ranch and guardian for livestock.

When I was 10, we got a female newfoundland. If we were out at a park having a picnic, she would put herself between us and strangers. My folks wouldn't let people pet her as she would often growl and then I think she once tried to bite someone. So, yea, not a German Shephard but a bit more protective that our black lab. Both were sweet dogs to family and own. Lab was all bark; newfoundland might have had some bite.

Hello there. My wife and I are about to start the next great adventure of our life are going to be moving from the New York City area (where have both lived all of our lives) to the Midwest. We plan on starting a family (of G-d wills it) and we love dogs and want lots of them. If you could point us in the right direction to where we can get a responsibly bread (ideally a rescue) Newfie puppy. Ideally it would be a rescue, but if not that’s not a realistic option we will happily purchase from an ethical breaded. Any and all recommendations, tips, tricks, personal stories, or jokes would be much appreciated.

Very, very large puppies "100lbs"with very, very sharp teeth. "May not be a good fit with small children. Otherwise, our Nufie was an experience of a lifetime. King Neptune was a 10 inches taller than standard dog of 220lbs. An incredible gentle giant, lifeguard and nursemad.

Make no mistake, it's people like this who, in fact, pose the biggest threat to the breed. The more popular they become only increases the pressure on breeders, both good and bad and puppy mills to produce yet more dogs. Inbreeding becomes a problem. Too many people, falling in love with the puppies, (we did!) don't really understand just how BIG a Newf can become both in size AND commitment. Newfs don't live in your house, they overwhelm it and they are expensive to properly care for, make no mistake. A 100-125lb dog can have big health problems which means big vet bills. As a result, dogs end up in shelters or worse. ( If you can't afford health insurance you probably can't afford the dog...at the very least, talk with your vet, please!) We were blessed to have had not one but two champions, at the same time! And I miss them. PLEASE, do your due diligence beforehand. It'll be time well spent.

Great video. BTW it's pronounced "Newfoondland" with equal emphasis on all 3 syllables. I am not a Newfoundlander (human or dog) myself, but I have spent some time there. Bitterly cold and windy winters and glorious, but short, summers !😃

NEWFIE!! at 6 months is a human teenager, just as hard headed but no cell phone required!! Had my boy for 10 almost 11yrs!..... Would be heartbroken without him!! How do you know if a Newfie loves you you are never alone! … Dunno if you want to mention this but they can suffer from separation anxiety! Boy had when he was younger and its rare now that he older!

Good channel advice but these dogs do not like being left alone and you need to ideally be with them as much as possible to get the most from them. Also cost. In the current climate people are buying dogs at will without any thought to vet bills feeding , insurance to name but a few. So many of these dogs end up in Newfoundland rescue due in part to some breeders who are just in it for the money to potential owners who like the idea of having.I aa giant dog on a lead.I I I have had the pleasure of being owned yes that is what newfi owners. say by their newfoundland over the last 24 years. I agree with you that training is paramount. Having seen the highs of completing water trials to seeing your beloved huge gentle giant put to sleep this is a unique breed who deserve good owners with time and commitment. 3 girls and one boy over 24 years and before that an alsatian for 12 years.

I want one so bad. My lifestyle is ideal, even down to spending time around water, I'm a beachie. Only thing is, I couldn't imagine getting a dog from a breeder (unless it was a small, reputable breeder) and I'm never gonna find one of these big babies in a shelter.

You likely won’t change your ways in how you pronounce the breed/province of Newfoundland, it’s pronounced Newfin-land or Newfun-land. Or better yet, say the word (understand, then Newfun-land) Some friendly advice given from a Newfoundlander myself. 👍🏼🇨🇦

Not a good idea to promote getting any pet. Taking care of a large dog costs a LOT in grooming and veterinarian bills. The dog needs a lot of socialization and exercise and room to run, and proper nutrition. You don't get a guard dog. You get a member of the family and you dedicate your life to that animal.

I'm sorry but being from Newfoundland myself I can't stand the way you're pronouncing it, we newfies pronounce it more as "Newfin' land" for example if you listen to The Islander by Shanneyganock you can hear it a lot better
