What it is like owning a Newfoundland dog | 4 things I wish I knew before getting a Newfie puppy.

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

So you want to get a Newfie? Well here are 4 things I wish I knew before diving into raising this amazing breed.
I encourage you to go through youtube and research more about what it is like to own a Newfoundland as this is my personal experience raising a female Newfie for the past 2 years.
This has been my first experience with the breed and the 3rd puppy I have raised a toy poodle, a huskylab, and newfie. Hope this helps all of you make the right choice, they are a loving beautiful breed and I would definitely get another in the future. They love their families so much and make amazing pets.

Just got a newf last week, her name is Tally and she is 7 months. I swear you just described her to the T. Let's just say I describe her as a free spirit, but you can see in her eyes how smart she is.

This is the most accurate video I’ve ever watched about Newfies, I have a 6 month old named Midnight and I wish I would’ve had this advice before I got her. Still love her but oh my whoever said the puppy stage was fun lied!

O my God, yes! No one told us that they are such active puppies. Two hours of playtime a day with other dogs was the only reason our house survived. Just except - you will have a human toddler for some time and roll with it. Plus, we still joking that newfies are the bane of introverts. Kids love them, strangers will pet them, soon you will know all regulars at the park. Construction workers, vendors, I mean EVERYONE. Your dog will make friends in the neighborhood without your assistance. I seen people, I never knew, greeting my dog though the window 😂

I have commented on others. You are correct. At about 1 year old, your Newf will become a strange looking 👀 Newf. I have known these days as the Newfy uglys. They are stubborn, because when in the water saving lives they have to think for themselves. My female was 165 lbs. not fat at all. Patients, love ❤️, consistent training will pay off greatly. Giving your Newf some way of working will also be helpful. I went got pony pulling harness. At Xmas time the family would cut a live tree 🌲. Would tie a rope between dog and tree. She was the happiest Newf you would ever see pulling her tree. Lots of love ❤️ and patience

My wife did child care for more than 30 years. I had gotten my 4th Newf a few months before we met. She always said it was like having a 2 year old human child. It only takes 24 hours to house break a Newf.

A newf will accept a limited number of commands. Any other request you have, will be submitted to a committee for consideration and in due time you will be given an answer.

I know one thing, raising any dog from a puppy and housebreaking can be daunting. I have an adorable 8-month-old Newfoundland puppy with a quarter Great Pyrenees named Ursa. She looks like a bear and I often call her my Bear in a China Shop or Ursa the Bear who pisses and shits everywhere. I have had to clean up plenty of accidents since we got her in February. Doesn't make me love her any less. Raising a puppy, especially a Newfoundland requires a lot of patience and lots of love.

@@BekDogs Yes, Ursa is a sweet and beautiful bear! I can't get too upset about the potty accidents and the digging in the trash can. She's a very active puppy and needs lots of stimulating activities to keep her out of trouble. At 8 months old, Ursa is smart enough to get herself in trouble.

I've had Rotties, mutts, shepherds but a newfie pup has been the most challenging. I have a 16 week old newf. Her name is Suki. She very mouthy on my hands and arms with bites. I'm black and blue. When I say leave it, she thinks of it as a suggestion and not as a command. How is she going to be a therapy dog? I'm going to need therapy is more like it. She's very affectionate in the morning when she wakes up then she sees my hand and basically attacks it. Help!

Hahaha don’t mean to laugh but this is exactly what we went through as well it is normal and it will get better they really test your patience and hope for improvement. I remember those little razor sharp teeth it was awful, always have a toy on hand to save you! All commands are kind of a suggestion to them still though 😅 but the one thing I am glad I did is work with a professional trainer from 4 months to 12 months of age. Even though I was frustrated and thought she wasn’t learning anything once she turn about 2 years old I see that everything we worked on paid off she is now able to go to the office with me and is off leash trained you just have to drill it in there and keep going !! The reward is worth it! ❤️
