    That legendary Sigma 18-35 is still my favorite lens to this day, it lived on my GH5 and created awesome videos and films! It unfortunately doesn't see as much action now that I'm on Sony FF, but whenever I can I always find a reason to bring my Sigma with me for video :) The only sad part is with everything moving over to mirrorless and less less mainstream lenses have the mechanical focus ring. If Sigma ever did create another beast of a lens like this for full frame it'll most likely have fly-by-wire focusing. Even if it is a linear focus algorithm it just doesn't feel magical haha. Lovin' the content Geoff, keep em comin'!

    Yeah it’s such a solid lens, I wish I could have used it with my R6 but it forced me to get sigmas 24-70 for full frame. The 18-35 is just so cost effective not sure I will ever get rid of it. Thanks for stopping by Jason!

    Hey been loving this content! What do you think is sharper combo with the 18-35 - R7 4k60 (lineskipped) or the R6 4k60 in crop mode 🤨 We have an R6, but if the 4k60 on the r7 is not that great it really makes it hard to justify going for the r7 for weddings.

  • @ReachFilms

    Thanks Matt! I’ll dive into the specifics in my review but the short answer is the crop mode is better quality, and that may bring value to using focal reducers with the r7 for slow motion in 4K and crop sensor lenses

    Informative Vid, thx. When you mentioned you wouldn't use the Variable ND Filter for "Narrative", can you describe some situations where you would not use it? In certain specific lighting situations? IE - interior Interviews? B-Roll? Looking at the various Variable ND Adapters, which looks to be great, do you get the color shift when using the clear filter also? I'm specifically looking at the Meike, which costs about $400 less than the canon, seems to be getting good reviews.

  • @ReachFilms

    @ReachFilms

    2 жыл бұрын

    So first no on the clear filter there shouldn’t be any color shift, however I haven’t tested Meike’s clear filter so I can’t speak to it. When it comes to these VND adapters ALL of them will have color shifting and it gets worse the closer to the max ND you go. In Narrative I wouldn’t use them FOR ANY footage because of the color shift issue, in narrative that kind of stuff just isn’t acceptable. But in a lot of other situations the color shift doesn’t matter as much if the images still look great.

    Will the Canon RF 35mm f1.8 lens has better photo and video quality compare to the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens in the 35mm focal length? Maybe the RF lens faster and smoother in focusing as the camera and the lens are compatible? Not sure bout that, wish to get yours and others' opinions. Thanks for the kind works silver! It really depends, you can pick up a sigma 18-35 used for around the same price as a new 35mm 1.8 RF, however the 35mm has built in image stabilization and is much smaller on the body of the camera. I think the sigma is sharper too however both lenses are great and I have them both! It really just depends on your personal situation on what you value more if you have to choose one or another

  • @ReachFilms

    @ReachFilms

    Жыл бұрын

    I don’t think the 17-55 is a bad lens by any means, however I will absolutely disagree that it is better in every way. Especially because of how much focus breathing it has. I can actually use the sigma 18-35 in a narrative production, tv show or whatever because the focus breathing is so minimal and the image is so sharp. The 17-55 is a decent lens but it really depends on the type of work you do. Other than having image stabilization and more available focal lengths that doesn’t equate to better quality. That equates to more features that suit your use cases.

    I got my R7 a few weeks ago and just got this lens today! But there seems to be an issue with this lens paired with the R7 IBIS. It is super jittery in both photo and video mode when I have stabilization on (IBIS, electronic stabilization, or both). It makes it unusable for video and very unpleasant for taking photos, which is a huge shame as IBIS was a big reason I went with the R7 over the R10. Did you run into this issue with the 18-35 together with the R7? No, it is not like a 24-70. It's tighter in the wide end and just 56mm equivalent on the long end. In terms of focal length It is way less practical, than a 24-70 on a full frame.

  • @ReachFilms

    We’re not speaking in black and white here, it’s an 18-35 1.8 that gives you similar results to a 24-70 on full frame. Is the same exact lens just translated over? No it isn’t, however for people who are not very techy or very technical when it comes to camera gear, that approximation helps with understanding what this lens can do.

    I don't see the point of this lens. The best lens for video for r7 is, in my opinion, canon rf-s 18-150 It works with matrix stabilization, simulation of parfocal, silence autofocus, smooth aperture and, most importantly, the range of focal lengths. And everything that this lens can't handle is solved with the help of primes. The 35mm 1.4 is much more useful than this sigma. The range in the 18-35 I'll solve with my feet. That's three to four steps each way. As a triumph of engineering and a specific lens for certain scenarios - the lens is wonderful. As something that will solve all your issues by becoming a universal lens for every day - absolutely not! It is an extremely rash decision.
