I previously made a video giving 5 reasons why you shouldn’t buy Lepin which was highly controversial. Over 500 thumbs up AND 500 thumbs down! But, I’ve taken that video down. That video wasn’t meant to cause offence but I got a lot of negative comments about some of the reasons I gave.
Some of the points I made were literally just things that my viewers have said to me that I repeated, and although I didn’t state them as facts or even say they were my opinion, some people got very angry. But I still want to tell you why I don’t buy Lepin, and so in this video I’m going to give you 5 reasons why I don’t buy Lepin.
5) They copy LEGO. Personally, it does not sit well with me morally to buy from a company that copies from another one. Sometimes, I use the word counterfeit, which doesn’t go down very well with some of you, so I won’t use that work. LEGO thinks it’s counterfeit, that’s why they launched a lawsuit in China against Lepin.
But what do you think? Here’s the LEGO Ghostbusters firestation, here’s the Lepin Firestation, what do you think??? The bricks aren’t copyrighted but the artwork on the instructions and boxes are. LEGO pays a lot to the likes of Disney to make Star Wars themes sets. I can understand that it’s difficult to stop a company selling the same collection of bricks that can be used to build a certain model, but I think when the copying is this blatant, it needs to be stopped.
4) Following on from that, people often say that they don’t buy LEGO because it’s too expensive and that because Lepin is cheaper, it’s better. But one of the reasons Lepin is cheaper is that they don’t have to pay Disney and other companies for the licenses, they don’t have to pay to develop the designs, they literally just have to copy what LEGO have done. With that in mind, if everyone stopped buying LEGO and just bought Lepin, LEGO would go bankrupt and close. Along with LEGO, all the great designs would disappear, as Lepin don’t design anything. Is LEGO overpriced? Yeah, sometimes. But I don’t buy Lepin because I want to support the company that designed the sets. If you don’t want to spend the money on LEGO, then why not buy from some of the other LEGO compatible companies like the ones in the list I made that I’ll link to below.
3) LEGO is better made. LEGO bricks are accurate to 0.002 mm, thinner than a human hair. I’ve never had a LEGO brick that didn’t fit together exactly as it was supposed to. By contrast it’s common to get Lepin bricks that don’t fit snuggly together, or that won’t fit together at all, or even worse, just fall apart. Long Lepin plate bricks also have a tendency to bend or warp by themselves, something that LEGO just wouldn’t stand for. Also, the colour printing in LEGO instructions is first class, making it easier to identify the colour of the bricks you need for your build.
2) I prefer the LEGO experience. When you buy from Lego you get a nice box and instructions. When you buy from Lepin you often just get a bag of bricks. Nowadays you don’t always even get instructions as the customs in some countries are confiscating Lepin sets. Another controversial thing I’ve said before is that I’ve never had a brick missing from a LEGO set, whereas I know that Lepin sets are more likely to have missing pieces. It’s also nice to be able to go to my local supermarket and come home with a LEGO set instead of waiting at least a week, more likely two or more for a package to arrive from China.
1) Resale Value. LEGO holds its value really well. In fact, many sets soar in value when they’re discontinued. Lepin on the other hand is actually very difficult to sell. eBay remove Lepin listings, and you won’t find them on Amazon either. This means that you’re either going to have to hold on to Lepin forever, or throw them away or sell the bricks by themselves at a great financial loss - so while it might seem like a bargain in the short-term, you might find yourself losing out in the long run.

jean-jacques, also Lego needs to focus on better production. They always claim "we're out" when someone tries to buy a set two MONTHS after it came out and all demand has died down. Then once you realize they have PLENTY of time to make more, they discontinue it. Well, I guess they don't need my money. I have not bought a set new from them in years because of their unbelievably low production volume. If Lego demands eBay stop letting people sell used sets, their customers will definitely abandon them and even the guy who uploaded this video knows that!

The best alternative for lego is cobi. They make military sets mostly, modelling real life vehicles and weapons, and IF by accident there is a broken or disfucntional brick you can send cobi a message and they will send you a replacement for it. Cobi is polish so for me personally that in itself makes a difference (for the good) , but in all honesty their kits have improved over the last 10 yeras, and they are up to the lego standard. I'm not trying to advertize, but in my opinion it's a shame that lego doesn't make these real life military vehicles, and most of the sets i see are either fantasy or modeled after movies, not counting lego technic. I'd like to see lego produce sets modeled after ww2 vehicles, but i will always keep buying cobi as i'm covinced their quality and pricing are good, and i get better value for money when i purchase their sets.

LEGO uses better quality plastic for its building blocks.(EASY to pass on to the next generation) I still have my first set and building blocks. I even have lego blocks that are older than I am. These plastic stones are now 50 years old and not distorted or discolored at all. That is a very good performance for plastic. This high quality you will certainly not get with the Chinese copy The chance of getting deformed lego bricks or parts is very very small. If a part is missing in a set, lego does not do difficult and sends you the item to you. So a few years ago I dived myself again in the world of Lego because even if you slightly are older Lego is still fun. You haven t pointed out but the chance that you don t get value for your money is little small. Lego puts a lot of extra spare parts in his sets. I only can imagine buying fake lego when you don t have the money for it of missed some of the sets that you wanted to have for a long time.

They've even stolen individual MOCs from creators. Importing from Lepin should be illegal. LEGO should have competitors - that keeps prices down. But not the lazy thievery that goes on with Lepin. I think I would have left the original video. I mean - probably at least half the people in the world are stupid so it was probably an accurate account of reality seeing the reaction you got. I took my video down because I started getting comments saying that Lepin should sue me for making libellous comments about them. As I said in this video, the things I reported weren't presented as fact, however some were most likely inaccurate. Even if I'm in the right, I don't want the hassle of some company threatening anything against me. Besides, remaking this more factual video will get a load of views as the Lepin muppets all run to tell me how wrong I am! I have to say that when I first discovered Lepin I was shocked, and then for a brief time I saw no harm in them, swallowing some of the fanboy stuff I read online. However the realisation quickly followed that it is a large scale LEGO cloning company, and that doesn't sit right with me. I stop short of calling it counterfeit, as it is not legally proven (yet). Lepin's parent company also has a brand called XingBao, which sells MOCs and pays the designers - personally, I am fine with this, although I can understand why many hardcore LEGO fans want to steer clear.

These things aren't as easy to find as they might be, and motors and battery boxes and electronics are the very things the Chinese are likely to do much much better. They might copy all your data, but they'll also produce an app that lets you control multiple trains better than Lego's klunky solutions.

An idea cannot be protected or owned by anyone under the law. A patent is awarded to someone who has agreed to explain how their product or invention works. I only bought one Lepin set so far. My experience was better than expected but still I'm not really planning on buying another one. The reason I bought this one: The set was discontinued by Lego a long time ago and even some bricks were discontinued a long time ago. The price of buying the individual original Lego Parts would have been over 100 times more expensive than the Lepin set. They sold it without instructions and without a printed box. The only thing illegal they did in my case was use a copied and slightly edited version of Legos original box art in their online shop. In general they are clearly doing illegal stuff. But at least in my case they would have been completely legal if they'd just removed the image and replaced it with the text "equivalent parts for building Lego set _____".

I'd like add my personal opinion regarding this "controversial" point. Firstly I wanna say I'm a Lego collector and Moc maker (just for my personal challenges of course), secondly i partially live in China since 13 years! Then: I can surely agreed that there are no doubts regarding all the copies products Lepin is doing on Lego (I personal bought some of them and I can confirm everything you said in your video!). But without enter that much in details can say also that Lepin it's an alternative for Chinese users (mainly children, in fact, in China, the "Moc concept" is still far from its means, adult work not play :) ! ), In China Lego sets are unbelievable expansive compare with several other local brands, more or less acceptable and Lepin , in China and in my personal opinion, it's one of the best (people doesn't care that much if copied, Moc or whatever...!). Another point of view if we projected Lepin in western (EU or US), definitely for “Lego purist” such "ashamed" copies are morally unacceptable… but sometimes even the financial strength of people are limited to purchase Lego and it's also not so right such "toys" are just affordable by few (I know this open a discussion about collecting, but if we're "funs" we'd not think about business, moreover I think Lego already made some action to avoid the sets reach high value after they've been dismissed from shops' shelfs, so…). Consider that even Lego is producing in China and the high quality is a cost, of course even here, but I think we all agree that the selling price of Lego products is really high and I personally don't care they produce Disney, Ghostbusters or other TM and I'd be charged for the rights fees they have to pay to them for me Lego is always traditional themes: Technics, Creators, Architects and City, all the others (not few indeed!!) are just commercial sets: for attract ours kids because TV push some formats instead of others and Lego follow the commercial tendency! Lego “costs” for the quality (molds, QC system, factory automation, R&D…) they have is definitely higher than Lepin (or others “compatibles” brands!), this must be recon in the selling price, which is right, but we don’t just pay for it (this is just an excuse today!) we pay for all the rest (as you mentioned in your video). More over I’d like to said that several sets produced by Lego today are picked from Lego IDEA or from the MOC and they don’t recognize to creators any prize (not just money!)… then we wanna talk about morally?! In conclusion (I think my comment is already long enough!), all these alternatives brands can found in the market can help to have more price competition, but even Lepin which today is the “official copier” of Lego, must be a signal to think that others can do also similar level of product and cannot just take advantage on the fact one can be collectable and other are just rubbish! Then totally agree about the copy but not agree about the other reasons which are neglectable compare with what should offer and what it’s right to pay. Who buy Lego (so I) will continue to buy it (no doubts!) but newer users (which might be never care about collecting!) they will looking for alternatives, which is definitely right and for us we’d not be blind only for Lego.

I'll add that Lego doesn't lose money because of Lepin, since Lepin customers can not offer to buy Lego, and limited Lego sets are sold out anyway. So lein didn't take anything from a financial POV form Lego. Another thing : What is scandalous is the copyright prices of US entertainement licences like Star Wars or Disney. The products licencing has become a greedy trade since it has been industrialized by US elite lawyers which are no more than businessmen, the most greedy bunisessmen on earth actually. they produce nothing but greedy overcomplicated contracts, making our lives harder and complicated. You can say now that a Star Wars movie is just a 2 hours advertising for collectibles and licences. An advertising that make huge money ! And they're still hungry...

My 11 year old nephew would like a Lego Technic Bulldozer for Christmas. He wants to use the bulldozer to build a motorcycle track in his backyard sandbox. The Bulldozer that would do the job is model no. 8275. Unfortunately this has been discontinued and on ebay a new set is selling for $1200. As much as I love my nephew, I can't afford $1200! This is why I am considering getting my first Lepin Bulldozer. The Bulldozer is going to get dirty, used, and beaten up but for $100, it's justified. My nephew only own Lego sets and I have only supported Lego so I see nothing wrong with getting one Lepin set. You could blame Lego for discontinuing the Lego Bulldozer 8275. If they continued to manufacture it, I would buy it. There is no other authentic Lego Technic Bulldozer alternative that compares and that is why 8275 is selling for so much money on ebay. If you find me an authentic Lego version at a reasonable price, I will buy it. I do agree with you, however, the Lepin version is counterfeit.

With Lepin as their alternative, it keeps their interest at bay until they can afford the real stuff. This is much better than giving up the hobby all together which doesn’t really help Lego either. 2. Lepin does off some sets that Lego doesn’t. For example... they have the game of thrones series which Lego doesn’t. They also have Lord of the Rings which their version is more detailed (even though their precision is not on Legos level)

Some good points, when you have the option to buy original Lego first hand. Personally, I feel the balance changes somewhat when a set is retired, especially when the intention is to keep the model and not sell it on. Whilst I haven't had a major problem buying pre-owned Lego, it's a very hit and miss experience. I've had one that had been nicely deconstructed into numbered bags. Others that have been partially broken down into bags (which have then come loose in transit), and one where the bits were loose in the box. At that stage, when the choice is limited to buying pre-owned Lego or a factory sealed clone set, the clone set can provide a better experience.

My 8 year old wanted the LEGO Eiffel Tower this Christmas, but I couldn’t afford it. It was the only item on his list .. Luckily Lepin had that same model. All I care about is my son experiencing building that lego set regardless if it’s LEGO or a knockoff. He was so thrilled and I’m glad there was an affordable option.

I hope you did tell your son it was not real LEGO. Even if he doesn't care about that kind of thing, his friends might. And you don't want him to lose face showing off his cool LEGO set to his friends and them pointing out it's not real LEGO ;-)

When I made my choice to go with Lepin his friends approval was the last thing on my mind. Besides my son has think skin. He hasn’t complained thus far.
